WHAT IS ICE?Ice is made of water which has been frozen. Water is an amazing liquid which can change into water vapor, or ice depending on its temperature.When a liquid is chilled to 0 degrees Celsius, it will become a solid. This solid is often referred to as ice. Ice will begin to melt as the temperature of its environment increases.

Ice makes it possible for all kinds of sports!

Will the Ice Melt and Overflow?

At first thought you might think that an ice cube sitting at the very top of a glass would eventually melt and spill over the sides but is this what really happens? Experiment and find out!

What you'll need:

• A clear glass• Warm water• An ice cube

Instructions:

1. Fill the glass to the top with warm water.2. Gently lower in the ice cube, making sure you don’t

bump the table or spill any water over the edge of the glass.

3. Watch the water level carefully as the ice cube melts, what happens?

What's happening?

Even though the ice cube melted the water doesn’t overflow. When water freezes to make ice it expands and takes up more space than it does as liquid water (that’s why water pipes sometimes burst during cold winters). The water from the ice takes up less space than the ice itself. When the ice cube melts, the level of the water stays about the same.

What Is SEA ICE?

Sea ice is a thin, fragile, solid layer that forms in the Polar Oceans. It forms a boundary between the relatively warm ocean and the cooler atmosphere.

Why does SEA ICE float?

Sea ice floats because it is less dense in the solid phase than it is in the liquid phase. If sea ice were MORE dense in the solid phase, it would sink to the bottom of the ocean (light things can't carry heavy things too well, right? Sinking, dense ice would cause the oceans to freeze to their beds, so animals and plants which live on the ocean floor would die!

Where can I find some SEA ICE?

Sea ice is found in the North (Arctic) and South (Antarctic) Polar regions. In the Arctic, there is a permanent body of ice.

Is SEA ICE the same thing as ICEBERGS?

No way! Icebergs are broken pieces of glaciers which originate from masses of snowfall on land.

HOW DOES SNOW FORM?Snow forms when the water droplets, in the clouds, grow too heavy to stay in the clouds, causing it to fall to the earth. When the weather is very cold, the droplets freeze. As the frozen droplets fall, they melt a little bit and turn into snow.

Animal Camouflage:First understand the word camouflage and then check out how it applies to animals. Camouflage is the result of confusing things to deceive an enemy, by painting or screening objects so that they are lost in the background. And this power is given to some animals which are unable to protect themselves.

Camouflage Information:The color and the patterns of any animal are usually the factors that allows it to either stand out and be clearly seen or blend in and be spotted occasionally. How does this help them? well, some animals that are specialized in camouflage, escape hunters or hunt more capably by being harder to see.

When it blends into its

background and can't be acknowledged easily

it is called camouflage.

Animals that stand out or don't have the ability to camouflage themselves, are often colored very brightly and don't need this ability; this is because in the animal world a bright color means danger or poison.

For example, many animals that live in snowy areas are white, like the polar bear. Many animals that live in deserts are sand-colored. Many animals that live in trees are green, many animals that live on rocks match the coloration of the rocks and many animals that live near the soil are soil-colored. Patterns, like stripes or spots, can also help camouflage an animal.

Let’s start by first knowing what are the dinosaurs, they are large reptiles and cold blooded creatures, by looking up the word precisely it means terrible lizards. And of course you've seen before modern reptiles like snakes, crocodiles and lizards. The first dinosaur appeared on earth around 230 million years ago and they ruled the earth for 165 million years. The dinosaurs had three developing stages throughout their long period of survival which are Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous.

Dinosaurs used to live on or survive on leaves shrubs and meat. A lot of people wondered how dinosaurs disappeared, and based on this there are many theories or ideologies trying to explain this distinction." One implies that 65 million years ago half the species of living things on earth disappeared. Scientists believe they were wiped out by a huge meteorite which caused climatic shocks that wiped out the dinosaurs. Other theories include: Mammals taking over the food supply or a massive volcanic eruption emitting out poisonous lava and gases." It is also believed that animals or mammals that survived through this period are relatively small in size or under 25 K.G.

What you'll need:

-Fresh seeds of your choice such as pumpkins seeds, sunflower seeds, lima beans or pinto beans.

-Good quality soil (loose, aerated, lots of peat moss).

-A container to hold the soil and your seeds.

-Water.

- Light and heat.

Instructions

1-Fill the container with soil.

2-Plant the seeds inside the soil.

3-Place the container somewhere warm, sunlight is good but try to avoid too much direct sunlight, a window sill is a good spot.

4-Keep the soil moist by watering it every day (be careful not to use too much water)..

5-Record your observations as the seeds germinate and seedlings begin to sprout from the seeds.

What's happening?

Hopefully after a week of looking after them, your seedlings will be on their way. Growth is the process of a plant emerging from a seed. For seedlings to grow properly from a seed they need the right conditions. Water and oxygen are required for seeds to grow. Many seeds grow at a temperature just above normal room temperature but others respond better to warmer temperatures, cooler temperatures or even changes in temperature. While light can be an important start for growing, some seeds actually need darkness to grow, if you buy seeds it should mention the requirements for that specific type of seed in the instructions.

The Water CycleLets get WET!!

The earth has a limited amount of water.  That water keeps going around and around and around in what

we call the "Water Cycle" This cycle is made up of a few main parts....

Evaporation:

Evaporation is the first step in the cycle. Evaporation is when the sun heats up any source of

water like lakes, rivers or oceans and turns it thorough the heat into steam or vapor.

This steam or vapor eventually goes into the air.

Condensation:

The second step is condensation. The water

vapor that went through the air as it goes higher it gets colder changing back into

liquid and forms the clouds.

Precipitation:

The third and the most important step is the

precipitation. Precipitation happens when so much water

is compressed that the air cannot hold it anymore. The clouds get heavy and water falls back to the earth in the form of rain, hail, sleet or

snow

When it ends up on land, it will either

soak into the earth or become part of the “ground water” that plants and animals

use to drink,

Collection:

The collection is the last step and it is when the whole process

repeats itself by nature. When water falls back to earth as

precipitation (raining, snow, hail or sleet), it may fall back in the oceans, lakes or rivers or it may

end up on land.

ACTION! You can see the same sort of thing at home... pour a glass of cold water on

That water didn't somehow drip through the glass! It

actually came from the air. Water vapor in the warm air turns back into liquid when

it touches the cold glass.

New evidence from satellites and weather stations suggests that way down south; Antarctica is getting hotter and hotter. And that unfortunately is not good news for the poor penguins. Scientists studying climate change knew some coastal a r e a s o f A n t a r c t i c a w e r e w a r m i n g . . . R e s e a r c h e r s suspected that the strong winds and freezing temperatures that hold these center regions were keeping the rest of the continent cool, as well.

It shows that much of this continent, especially the West Antarctic Ice Sheet — had been warming in the past decades. This region makes up about one-quarter of the continent and has a lower average rise than does East Antarctica. The new investigation showed t h a t , o v e r a l l , W e s t Antarctica is warming about 0.17 degrees Celsius per decade, a rate comparable to the average elsewhere in the world. A description of their findings appeared in the Jan. 21 issue of Science News.

To check that out, a group of scientists decided to take a cold, hard look at the data. T h e t e a m c o m b i n e d meteorological records from 42 wea ther s ta t ions in Antarctica together with data collected from satellites. Some of the data went back 50 years. The scientists then came up with a new estimate of temperature trends in Antarctica.

J u s t a s t h e s c i e n t i s t s suspected, parts of East Antarc t i ca had coo led slightly between 1957 and 2006. Antarctica’s warming began recently, the scientists s u s p e c t . T h e r i s e i n temperature was most likely d r i v e n b y a r a n g e o f dramatic changes . For example, huge areas of sea ice off the Antarctic coast have shrunken over the past 25 years. The loss of that sea ice has, in turn, helped open West Antarctica to storms carrying warm, moist air and snow.

Melting ice sheets could also spell disaster for the continent’s wildlife. In another new study, this one reported in the January 26 records of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers focused on emperor penguins that rely upon the winter sea ice to breed.Data gathered showed that when winter sea ice dropped an average of 11 percent for several years, the penguin population also took a drop. During that period, the population fell to half its normal number. When the sea ice reached high levels, penguin populations remained high.

If Antarctic ice sheets continue melting at a high rate, emperor penguins could nearly be wiped out, says Hal Caswell, a mathematical ecologist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, in Massachusetts. Even if sea-ice melting slows, the overall number of penguins is still likely to sadly continue falling.
