From The “Katy” Business Car

Great things are happening at the club.  For those of you that are still trying to shel-ter in place due to COVID-19 concerns, let me pull the curtain back and reveal some really exciting views around the club.            If you have not viewed our TWMRC Facebook page and posts lately, you will see that we have raised the BNSF signal into its permanent spot in front of the club.  Jim Archer and Don Hayes are working on plans to wire it into the building and connect it to the original “blinking” mechanism that was donated by BNSF.  The “blinking mechanism  was brand new in the box and was dated 1979!  Talk about classic!  The “blinking” mechanism will be located just inside the front door and will give visitors a chance to see part of what was in those big silver cabinets sitting beside the signals on a real railroad.  The mechanism is electro-mechanical and you can see the contact points rocking back and forth as they make a clicking sound to cause the signal lights to blink.  It is a really cool piece of history.  I am in the process of having a plaque made that I will install on the signal to show our appreciation to the BNSF railway.  Don Hayes is busy rehabbing the older signal so we can install it next.  Inside the club, work on the GM plant area is making progress.  Jay Waters is building the GM plant at home and hopes to have it ready in a few weeks.  In the Dallas Union Station area, Jay Waters and Jerry Fussell are laying track to make the station look as prototypical as possible with as many passenger tracks as can be squeezed in as possible.  On the end of the layout next to the Electrical Room, Darrell Cowles, with some help from Trapper Kirkpatrick and Jim Archer are laying new track to go into the Ft. Worth Federal Depot.

Part of the track will disappear behind the depot into the wall of the helix and connect to a track that goes to Houston, just like the prototype railroad operations.         Jim Archer has also installed a track detection system and warning lights that will let approaching trains to the helix know if another train is in the helix.  Well done Jim.       Clarence Zink is busy working on trackage around the Texas Steel area and expects to breathe life into it soon.  Chris Galvin has plans to start with landscaping around Tower 55.  Good bye foam base!!    He will be building a team to get that done.  Curtis Stanley is now working in the library to help Jim Hollis organize the library and help us find and organize all of those special treasures we have in there.           If you are not yet working on a Gang, look around at the areas under development and talk with the Job Foremen and ask them if they need help.  My goal is to see everyone actively engaged somewhere on the layout.  There is no better way to feel a part of something than to be putting in your labor and heart into it.  I do not want anyone to feel that they are on the outside looking in.  So, please get involved and join in the construction.  Thanks,

David Crumpton

Installation of the first of the clubs two RR Crossing Signals was completed in July.

A Big Thanks to the city of Forest Hill City Works Dept. for the assistance in getting our signal unloaded and set in place in front of our club house. Several of our members lead by Dar re l l Cowles & His Team coordinated the placement of the signal back in mid-July. Since then, Jim Archer and Don Hays have worked on getting the signal lighting working. Jim had a great idea to display the donated working blinking mechanism in a glassed cabinet and placed it just inside our front door as you enter the club. All can see it working when the

light switch is turned on inside the club.

CDO’s Sky-Top Lounge Car

t’s never easy to lose one of our friends and the passing of Leo Palitti has made for a hard couple of weeks for all that knew him. Leo was so loving and gracious with his time and talent. Our hearts hurt for Lorrie & the rest of Leo’s family as they mourn and remember their

lives with this awesome man. It’s safe to say that Leo influenced myself and countless others with his fabulous structures & scenery making expertise. We were lucky to have such a positive and productive builder among us.

( Leo re-visiting His model of the Branch Davidian Compound now on permanent display at a Waco Historical Exhibit about the 1990’s conflict. )

At our July TWMRC Business Meeting it was discussed that we begin putting Scenery on our layout to put our best foot forward for a November “Open House” for the City of Forest Hill, that our previous CEO promised the city. The club wants to show off our layout and to express our appreciation for their efforts to get out club dried out and rebuilt during the great flood the year before. At our most recent BoD meeting it was agreed upon to begin those scenery efforts around Tower 55. It is our goal to continue putting in scenes throughout the 53” level by weathering and ballasting track, putting in ground scenery, and complete backdrop painting of clouds and lower background painting, add structures, bridge underpasses, and other details to put our trains onto a scenic stage.

I

I put together a Scenery Crew of Steve Parrish, & Terry Morris and hope more that want to get involved “on the layout” will join us. We recently had a quick airbrush basics and paint lesson, then the fellas’s got to it around the Tower 55 tower area. Steve and Terry put there best efforts forward and feel more a part of the Texas Western Team!!! We will be bringing in a guest clinician to show us how to put in some grassy patches, though not a dominant feature around the tower in 1962, our research has proven the green stuff did exist around this part of the layout. We will be modeling electrical boxes and their switch lever coverings that populated the tracks and turnouts around the tower and determining the ballast color(s) to use on the tracks. I know the club established some of these colors when some ballast colors were approved that the late Gary Cox had researched. If you have any further insights, we welcome your input in this area as well as other scenic suggestions.

Happy Rails !!!
