INDUSTRY PROFILE

Helmets Production and its usage have a long history in India context. Right from

the ages of Mahabharata and Ramayana, helmets have been in usage as a productive

safety hedgers. Formally helmets were produced employing mental and alloy. Then

helmets were stiff and stiff and heavy. As time progressed, they to assume manifold

purposes. Besides producing helmets as a safety component, the companies/ industries,

general utility, mining and sports sectors also.

The discovery of plastics, polymers and viscous liquids changes the outlook of

helmets industry. Prior to independence, the usage helmets in India, as part of traveling

requirement was significantly less. The personnel serving in the British army mostly used

these. Helmets were mostly imported from England. Then helmet production industry

was yet to take its birth in India.

The helmets and auto industries in India is developing at fast pace there are many

big player in this industry namely STEEL BIRD,HISTAR MPA, VALAZA

,STUDY,VEGA,VOLGA, and the rest from the unorganized sector. The industry has

good scope and potential because of the changing market dynamics and the massive

demand for helmets. In the 1973 gadgets India, the first company in the blaze group and a

first of its kind in India developed a helmet line under the brand name blae. In the mid-

1970s, helmet usage was not popular in India. In the early stages the sales were low and

grew slowly. Later at the end of the 1970’s then two more companies entered in the

market. Steel bird entered with its high priced helmets and conquered with its low-end,

cheap industrial helmets. By this the helmet industry was developing at moderate speed.

The blaze was co-operating in the both ends, producing at premium helmet price

10% lower than steel bird’s and lower quality helmets of more price conscious

consumers. Blaze quickly secured a leading position in both the high and low ends of

10

Page 11: 78028444 vega-helmets-organisational-study

VEGA AUTO ACCESSORIES

these embryonic helmet markets. The brand become synonymous with helmets in India,

and its market leadership was virtually uncontested though the remainder of the 1970’s

and into the first half of the 1980’s.all blaze products complete with the revelent country

or regional standard. They had good brand in the domestic market. This was mainly due

to its marketing strategy and efficient distribution channel. Meanwhile a Steel bird with

market share was growing at steady pace. The market share of blaze was 75% and Steel

bird with 15%ans rest 10% conquered else.

Vega entered market in the early 1980’swith annual sales of 10000 units per year.

At the same time histar 50 odd small manufactures entered the market. The small

manufactures came with low end models, often sold in temporary roadside stands by

individual sellers, independent of any building histar completed directly against blazes

premium product line adopting a strategy similar to that used by blaze’s Steel birds, histar

priced its premium product 10% less than blaze’s prices at the low –end of the market as

well. A few of these smaller manufactures infringed on blaze’s brand name, they made

helmets identical appearance to blaze’s line but at much lower cost. The duplicate bore

the blaze’s brand name and could not be distinguished from genuine blaze’s helmets.

The duplicate retailed for Rs. 170, while blaze’s cost for manufacture was greater

than Rs.210 trade mark infringement was not legal under Indian law, however in the past

when blaze had tried to prosecute violators of it trademarks, the penalty for infringement

was not high enough to justify the two year prosecute period. The domestic market for

helmets, a derived from bi wheeler usage, grew steadily through the early 1990’ as did

the no of competitors. Meanwhile blaze was the first Indian company to export helmets to

Italy & Germany. As there was improvement in technology & new production methods

were adopted by the manufactures helped them to cater the needs of the domestic

markets. Then steel bird entered the foreign market, as later on Vega also started

exporting their helmets. Regions within India had the authority to create their own helmet

laws.

As a result, helmet use was mandatory in some regions and optional in others.

Helmet laws were enacted and retracted frequently, as local Govt. charged. In regions in

which the rider was forced by law to be a helmet the soul criterion for helmet purchase

was price. Safety, style and brand name were not important factor in these consumer

11

Page 12: 78028444 vega-helmets-organisational-study

VEGA AUTO ACCESSORIES

minds. At the end of the 1990’s the export also started rising because the production cost

of Indian helmet was cheaper than the manufacturers for the Thailand and Malaysia.

About four years ago growth in the helmet segment was cruising along at around

10% annually. Now it is hurtling along at almost 40%. That’s why even global players

are now looking at India. AVG is the only foreign brand. Which is sold in Indian

companies is tied-up foreign a company like Steel bird has an existing technical

collaboration with Italian helmets company bieffe, it is also collaboration with companies

like GPone and Neva. American company Daytona helmets, which has tie-up with

Belgaum based Vega accessories.

The fact that the Indian helmets marker isn’t anywhere as big as it ought to be.

There are two key reasons for this. Firstly, wearing helmets was only compulsory in

Delhi and half-a-dozen other states, most others parts of the country were still dragging

their feet about implementing helmet wearing. That’s the only problem faced by helmet

manufacturers. It is reckoned that about Rs.200 crores worth of helmets are sold in

domestic market annually. But almost 50-60 % of them are produced in the unorganized

sector, these are probably the ones you see being sols by the road side.

Nevertheless, the organized sector players like Vega, Steel bird, MPA and studs

are extending their range, conducting road shows, initiating road safety lectures, and even

forging alliances with foreign partners to make the most of the growing demand.

THE HELMET RULING section 129 of the central govt. motor vehicle act makes

it mandatory for two- wheeler riders to wear productive helmets. While Delhi is among

the first Indian states to implement it stringently, the rule was actually imposed in

Maharashtra following a High court ruling to a public interest litigation of 2001, typically

confusion reigned among the traffic police department on the implementation of the rule.

The directive insists on a helmet for the pillion rider too. However, due to the high ratio

of two wheelers riders versus the no. of helmets currently available in the market, the

traffic police have relaxed the clamp on errant pillion riders for the time being.

There was a time when many found seatbelt uncomfortable and ignored. But a

court ruling made it mandatory and strict implementation by the traffic police bought it

into force. People resigned themselves to the fact that there is no escape in it and today it

12

Page 13: 78028444 vega-helmets-organisational-study

VEGA AUTO ACCESSORIES

is not surprising that the majority of people subconsciously belt hope as soon as the site

in their cars.

The some will hold true for helmet. A few to the Mumbai traffic

police’s interventions, more riders are being seen wearing helmets. A prominent helmets

store in the city is witnessing unprecedented sales, proving that there was an alarming no.

of riders without helmets on Mumbai roads, prior to the enforcements of the ruling. One

of the most common complaints against helmet is that they are cumbersome to lug

around. But the sheer nature of two- wheeler transport makes it necessary.

In the months of helmet industry boomed as the govt. made rules

for mandatory use of helmets though it is in not practice through out the world, but

helmet industry used it as an opportunity to be stable in an industry.

It made huge sales in the domestic market.

needs of the customer and the market demand.

The amount spent on the Research and Development is 5-7% of the turn over. In

This is all about the departmental structure of the organization Vega. In all the

and competitive manner. The entire area covered by the company is around 40000 sq. ft.

in its functioning at a very centralized place in the city.

It is said in Marathi, murti lahan pun kirti Mahan i.e. small in size but big in its

popularity/ familiarity. Thus Vega becomes a name which is known for helmets, but in

Belgaum it is a real fact that the helmets are known to the people by VEGA. This is so

because helmets are manufactured in Vega when in Belgaum it doesn’t have any demand.
