ALBERTO BACHMANN [violinist]. 1875-1963. Born in Switzerland and a pupil of Eugen Ysaÿe, Bachmann was active on the concert stage and as a composer. In addition, he was the author of four books on the violin and violinists: Le Violon in 1906, Les Grands Violinistes du Passé in 1913, Gymnastique à l’Usage des Violinistes in 1914, and the culmination of his work as a writer in 1925 with the publication of his Encyclopedia of the Violin (1925), which is still in print (English translation by Martens, 1926).

JEANNE BEHREND and ALEXANDER KELBERINE [pianists]. Behrend (Philadelphia, 1912-1988) was a graduate of Curtis and pupil of Josef Hofmann. Her New York solo debut was in Carnegie Hall, 1937. In building her repertoire she concentrated primarily on North and South American composers. Alexander Kel-

berine (Kiev, 1903-New York City, 1940), also a pupil of Josef Hofmann as well as Busoni, Leo Sirota, Alexander Siloti and Abram Chasins, was the first husband of Jeanne Behrend. They formed an acclaimed duo-piano team, making a few recordings for Victor. He was a noted soloist and arranger as well. For some years, Kelberine suffered from acute depression. His final concert, at Town Hall the week before his death, was mostly of minor key music with “funereal connotations, concluding with Franz Liszt’s Toten- tanz.” His death was from an overdose of sleeping pills.

His pupils included Ginette Neveu, Michele Auclair and Manuel Rosenthal. He married Denise Soriano (1916-2006), the noted Violinist, who was 39 years his junior. Louis Diémer is indicated in Creighton as being Boucherit’s accompanist on his rare records.

[JOSEPH CHARLES] ROSARIO BOURDON dir. VICTOR SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA. Longueuil, Québec, 1885-New York City, 1961. Bourdon began studying the cello at the age of seven. In 1897 he continued cello studies and piano as well at the Ghent Conservatory in Belgium, winning “first prize with great distinction” after being there less than a year. In 1902 he accepted a position as cellist with the Cincinnati Symphony and then in 1904 with the Philadelphia Orchestra. In 1909, Victor hired him in various musical capacities, including piano accompanist and cellist for a number of artists, as well as directorship of various Victor house ensembles. He became musical co-director of Victor in 1920, sharing the position with Josef Pasternack, and remained there until 1931, when the Depression virtually ended, at least for a period, the domestic solo and house ensemble recording activities. He then worked in Hollywood, on the radio, and in 1935 became the first conductor of the Montréal Orchestra Symphonique. He

was awarded an honorary musical doctorate in music, 1944, by the Université de Montréal. –Wikopedia.

In 1906 his ballet, The Pink Flower, was produced by Diaghilev with Nijinsky and Karsavina. In 1916 he met George Ivanovitch Gurdjieff and from that year until 1929 he was a pupil and confidant of the controversial Gurdjieff at his Institute for the Harmonius Development

GRAINGER SINGERS AND PLAYERS dir. FRANK KASSCHAU. Kasschau (New York City, 1884-Ridgewood, NJ, 1944) began his musical career as an organist, church choir director (Flatbush Congregational Church in Brooklyn) and an accompanist. He became noted as a choral director in the Connecticut, New Jersey and New York area from the late ‘teens, particularly after taking over directorship of the Bridgeport (CT) Oratorio Society from 1923, when Percy Grainger first worked with him. Grainger referred to him as “a composer’s conductor” and further added that Kasschau had “a fine beat and fine [musical] judgment and has done wonders with the Bridgeport Choir.” Kasschau subsequently settled in Ridgewood, NJ and directed the Ridgewood Chorale from 1928 until his death. A memorial performance shell was erected in his memory in Ridgewood, 1957, and is still functional today. He also directed the Orpheus Club of Newark and several other area choral groups.

Joachim began musical studies with Stanislas Ser- waczynski (who later taught Wieniawski) and after 1839 he studied at the Vienna Con- servatory. He became a protégé of Felix Mendelssohn. In 1844, in a performance conducted by Mendelssohn, he performed the Beethoven Violin Concerto, “a triumph” which “helped to establish that work in the repertory”. He was associated particularly with Brahms and Robert and Clara Schu- mann. While at first a friend and associate of Liszt, he broke with him in 1857 and detached himself from the “New German School” (Liszt, Wagner, Berlioz and their followers). He also was a noted composer and teacher, his pupils having included Leopold Auer, Willy Burmester, Adila Fachiri (his niece), Bronislaw Huberman, Jenö Hubay, Maximilian Pilzer, and Maud Powell, among many others. 1963. A highly regarded pianist, Merö elicited some enthusiastic praise from the major reviewers of the time. James Huneker, after an Aeolian Hall concert in 1919, wrote, “She draws a sonorous tone from her instrument, her touch is musical and facile and she might hold her own with any of her contemporaries; but her speed-mania urges her to dizzy flights. Nevertheless, we were more exhilarated by the performance of Yolanda Merö than by those of more careful pianists.” From the 1930s until her death she devoted her time to impresario work, in particular being co-founder of New York’s New Opera Company, active in the 1930s and ‘40s. She left only one disc recording.

RICARDO ODNOPOSOFF [violinist]. Buenos Aires, 1914-Vienna, 2004. Born of Russian immigrants, he was accepted at the age of thirteen as a student of Carl Flesch at the Berlin Hochschule für Musik. His debut was four years later as a soloist with the Berlin Philharmonic, directed by Erich Kleiber. He was second prize winner at the 1937 Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels, David Oistrakh having won first prize. As a soloist, he appeared with great success on five continents, his U.S. debut at Carnegie Hall in 1944. He later taught at the Vienna Conservatory and then, from 1975 to 1984, the Zurich Hochschule für Musik. Reviews of his performances certainly place him among the foremost of 20th century violinists.

EUGENE ORMANDY [violinist/conductor]. Budapest, 1899-1985. Born Jenö Blau, Ormandy studied violin at the National Hungarian Royal Academy of Music beginning at the age of five and graduated with a master’s degree at 14. In 1920 he obtained his doctorate in philosophy. The following year he emigrated to the U.S., close on the coattails of a number of other young virtuosi, mostly of Russian heritage.

While his dreams of a solo career didn’t materialize, he quickly became the concertmaster of the Capitol Theater orchestra, with David Mendoza conducting and Dr. William Axt “in charge of composition”. He eventually took over as conductor. Here he directed music accompanying the (silent) films as well as stage shows featuring much of the standard orchestral repertoire. In 1931 he replaced Toscanini, who was ill, in a Philadelphia Orchestra performance, leading to his work with the Minneapolis and then Philadelphia Orchestras. As a violinist, he made a few recordings for Cameo and Okeh. At a touring Philadelphia Orchestra concert I brought one of his early violin solo records for him to sign. He looked at it and said, “Now you know why I became a conductor.” He made no attempt to autograph it.

became a student of Antoine Marmotel at the Paris Conservatory at the age of 10, winning first prize that first year. After a youthful period of concertizing and playing chamber music, he retired in favor of composition. He resumed his concert career in 1872 and thereupon became established as one of the major pianists of the period. Retiring in 1908 upon the death of his wife, Planté made occasional subsequent appearances mainly for charity. His recordings were made in 1928. As Lyle points out in his A Dictionary of Pianists, Planté and De Pachmann were the only two pianists born during the lifetime of Chopin (1810-1849) to have recorded electrically. Both shared eccentric personalities as well.

RAOUL PUGNO [pianist]. Montrouge, 1852-Moscow, 1914. Studying first at the École Niedermeyer and then with Mathias at the Paris Conservatory (1866-1869), he was regarded as one of the great pianists of his time. His debut had been in 1858 at the age of six, and he was encouraged by a father who wanted him to be a musician. Pugno toured internationally, both as a soloist and at one point with the Belgian violinist Eugen Ysayë. Despite his grand size, his touch, stated Harold Schonberg, “was light and his technique was incredibly flexible”. Musical commentator Wilson Lyle refers to “the delicacy, fire and power of his playing”. His pupils included composer and pianist Nadia Boulanger, André Benoist, Ernst Levy and Germaine Schnitzer, among many others. His only records, 1903 G&Ts, are exceptional rarities.

MANUEL QUIROGA [violinist]. Pontevedra, Spain, 1892-1961. Quiroga had several important works dedicated to him (including the 6th of Ysaÿe’s Six Sonatas for Unaccompanied Violin ). In addition to his fame as a celebrated virtuoso, Quiroga had an extensive catalogue of compositions and was also a painter and caricaturist of accomplishment. His career as a performer was halted in 1937 when he was injured by a car while crossing New York’s Times Square. Permanent damage occurred through a loss of feeling and motor skills in his left hand, although he was able to continue his career as an artist and composer.

SIGURD RASCHER [saxophonist]. Elberfeld, Germany, 1907-Shushan, NY, 2001. Considered by many the most gifted saxophonist of the 20th century, Rascher was born to a Swedish father and English mother and was raised in Switzerland. He spent his first few years in jazz and dance bands, and then completed his studies at the Stuttgart Musikhochschule in 1930. He became an international success, making his U.S. debut in 1939, playing in concert and with major orchestras, such as the Boston Symphony and New York Philharmonic. He had over 150 works written for him and his instrument by composers such as Milhaud, Ibert, Alexander Glazounov, Eric Coates (the selection below), Husa, Martin and dozens of others. I had the great thrill of accompanying for him in a college workshop many years ago.

OLGA SAMAROFF [pianist]. San Antonio, TX, 1880-New York City, 1948. Born Lucy Mary Agnes Hickenlooper, she changed her professional name after European studies to that of a distant rela- tive. She self-produced her Carnegie Hall debut in 1905 with orchestra directed by Walter Damrosch, making an “overwhelming impression”. Her career covered the U.S. and Europe. In 1911 Samaroff met and married Leopold Stokowski and “lobbied her distin- guished contacts to get him appointed (in 1912) to the vacant conductor’s post” of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Among her many pianistic “firsts” was in performing all 32 Beethoven Sonatas in concert. In 1923, Stokowski left her and eventually had two subsequent wives and well publicized affair with Greta Garbo (between wives two and three). In the 1920s, Samaroff fell and injured her shoulder, which led to the end of her performing career. She taught at Juil- liard and the Philadelphia Conservatory beginning in 1924 until the end of her life, pupils having included William Kapell, Rosalyn Tureck, Alexis Weissenberg, Jerome Lowenthal and Bruce Hungerford, among hundreds of others. 1270. 12” Red Victrola 74772.

JULIUS L. SCHENDEL [pianist]. Master Julius Schendel (age not otherwise given) made his debut in Steinway Hall in 1896. His career continued at least through the 1920s, frequently as an accompanist. Nathaniel Shilkret, in his autobiography Sixty Years in the Music Business, recalled Schendel as “a fine pianist, but he was a very strange man – almost a mystic. He was emaciated and very nervous.” He and Shilkret (clarinet) were playing in an ensemble, and Schendel proclaimed that as it was Brahms’ birthday, he would only play his music. “We [the ensemble] compromised: We would change some pieces to Brahms compositions, providing he would play some pieces by another composer. Schendel shut his eyes, went into sort of a trance, and finally said, ‘The Master will allow me to play other composers, if you will play four Brahms pieces this session.’ We agreed.”

NATHANIEL SHILKRET [conductor], VICTOR SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA. Queens, NY, 1889-Franklin Square, NY, 1982. Born to Austrian immigrants, Shilkret was a gifted clarinetist and a member at various times of a number of notable orchestras, including Victor Herbert’s Orchestra, the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic (under Mahler), the New York Symphony and so on. He was also a gifted pianist. He was hired by the Victor Company around 1915 and soon became chief and principal arranger for the Foreign Department. In 1926 he became head of their Light Music Department, and also was in charge of the Red Seal department for a period. He was one of Victor’s few musicians to remain with the company through the Depression, leaving Victor in 1941 after an operation for abdominal cancer. He was also active from the late 1920s as well on the radio and in film work. After the death of his wife in 1958, he retired, although his last engagement seems to have been several years earlier. He subsequently lost all his music in a house fire and died all but forgotten at the age of 92. I remember being amazed to see his obituary in a local (Massapequa) newspaper, as I had no idea he was still living and so near Amityville. 1670. 12” Blk. Orth. Victor 35997.
