All the Tertians went to the Basilica of Bom Gesu for theFeast of St Francis Xavier on 3rd Dec. to seek God’s blessingthrough the intercession of the Saint. The next morning weleft for different parts of India for our Hospital Experiment.I went to Mother Theresa’s Leprosy Home, Surat, Gujarat. This home accommodates 283 inmates: lepers, mentally sick,TB patients, old and aged [male and female]. I was withleprosy patients. Sr. Superior was very kind to warmlywelcome me to stay with them. Initially I had fear as howto begin my service there. For a few days, I just observedthem. Gradually as I came to know the patients and likewisethey came to know me I felt quite comfortable with them.I used to dress their wounds, give them haircut, andserve them during their meals. The rest of the time I waslistening to their stories. I was touched by their God/faith-experiences. Truly this was an occasion to deepen myunderstanding of human life of joy and suffering. Finally, with this Hospital Experiment, we are in the last phase ofour Tertianship.

Jerusalem

The Advent season drew the attention of many Christiansand the pilgrims to the Holy Land and more specifically toBethlehem. The most attractive and visible symbol ofChristmas was fifteen meters high Christmas Tree at MangerSquare just outside the Church of Nativity. Already on 3rd

Dec., the Christmas Tree was blessed and inaugurated. The Mayor of Bethlehem lit myriads of colorful lightsdecorated in it. Like last year our community together witheleven students and a few guests participated in the VigilMass at Bethlehem. The Eucharist was presided over bythe local Bishop together with one hundred and fiftyconcelebrants. The presence of the political leaders, ambassadors and other dignitaries enhanced the significanceof the event. The Mass was in Latin and the readings werein various languages. Just before the final blessing, all theconcelebrants led the Bishop holding the baby Jesus, inprocession and moved into the Grotto of the Nativity. TheBishop placed the Child Jesus in the manger at the Grottoand a special prayer of adoration followed thereafter forhalf an hour. The following morning the whole communitytogether had a solemn Eucharistic celebration in theShepherds’ fields. Two Jesuits, Fr. Dean Bechard SJ, aprofessor of Biblicum Rome, and Fr. Aloysius Bi SJ fromUSA joined us in these events. Fr. Aloysius is a Chinese

Jesuit and a student of Notre Dame University, USA, camehere for his field experience on international conflictsituations. He worked with the UN personnel and someNGOs directly involved in the work of peace and justice.

From the year 2016, the community of the PontificalBiblical Institute, Jerusalem became officially part of NearEast Province. The present Provincial Fr. Dany and theProvince Treasurer, Fr. Michael Zammit made an officialvisit to us just a week before Christmas. According to thedirection of Father General, the PBI Jerusalem stands withdouble identity. First, the PBI Jerusalem is, as it had beensince its origin, an Institute under the Delegate ofInternational Roman Houses and is recognized as an integralpart of the Biblical Institute, Rome. The present Directorof this Institute here is Fr. Stefano Bittasi SJ. Second, theJesuits residing in this Institute will be under the supervisionof the Near East Provincial. Wish all the Province membersa Prosperous New Year 2017.

Indeed, an apt way of preparing oneselffor the Christmas!

On the community level, the Gesù community movedto Rocca del Papa on 16th Dec. for the spiritual renewalthrough two days of prayer and reflection on the mysteryof Incarnation. On 24th Dec., all participated in the midnightEucharistic Celebration in Gesù Church presided over byR.P. Provincial of Italy. Keeping up with the tradition ofsharing the Christmas joy and peace with those praying forthe Society, the entire Gesù community went to San PietroCanisio and sang Christmas carols for them and with them.Almost the entire Infirmary community was present to listento the Carols presented by the young Jesuit Scholastics.Later in the evening, the community came together forChristmas gathering. The Scholastics of Central Zone ofSouth Asia Assistancy presented a tribal dance on a Sadrihymn Dekhu Janam Lelain Yesu. Many non-tribalScholastics too joined them to dance on the tribal tune. AfterChristmas, many members of the community dispersed indifferent directions for the religio-cultural tour of the bellaItalia (beautiful Italy).

Amidst the preparations for the festivities, Edwin Dangsuffered from severe cough and cold because of the freezingtemperature, which interrupted his academic pace for acouple of days in early December. He involved himselfactively in Christmas preparations as the Institute ofPsychology prepared to present a few Christmas Carols inthe beautiful quadrangle of the University. By 20th Dec.,most of his companions had already left for the Christmasministries to different parishes. He decided to stay back athome to recuperate from the viral infection and to completehis accumulated academic assignments. Along with someof his friends, he was happy to concelebrate the midnightChristmas Holy Mass in the Church of St. Ignatius. To bring

in the Indian taste to the Christmas celebrations, he assistedBiju Sebastian in preparing a delicious festive dinner on26th Dec. The other Ranchi men in Rome were cordiallyinvited for the dinner.

The month of December, as usual, was yet anotherhectic month for Dilip Sanjay in Vatican Radio. He had totake special care to not to miss any of the messages ofHoly Father given during the Advent season, whichculminated in the solemn Christmas message and also inthe Message for the World Day of Peace. Despite the busydays, he managed to squeeze sometime out for a Pilgrimageto Milan along with the younger Scholastics of hiscommunity.

He was extremely happy to see the progress madeby his younger brother, although the full recovery remainsa long way to go. In Ranchi, Ajit Kr Xess kindly extendedhis generous helping hand in taking his parents from Mandarto Medica for a much-needed general health check-up.That was great relief for Prem.

One of the most memorable events amongst theChristmas festivities in Ranchi was the Christmas Gatheringat XISS. Xavier Soreng, Alex Ekka, Pradeep Kerketta, andAshok Ohol were assisted by some of the staff membersto organize an evening, where Professors and co-workersmingled freely with one another along with their familymembers and exchanged Christmas gifts. After thegathering, all shared a sumptuous festive dinner. Probably, one of the remarkable ways to create a family atmospherein the Institute and to enhance creativity, competence andcooperation!

The month of December kept us busy with our classes andassignments. We finished our regular classes of the firstsemester on 5th Dec. After a week of preparation, we hadour exams from 12th to 22nd Dec. After exams were over, some of us went for outing for a day to relax together. Weinvited James to join us.

The community of General Pintos (Anuj´s community)was happy to welcome Rev. Fr. Nicholas, the formerSuperior General of the Society of Jesus for lunch. Afterthe lunch we got a chance to interact with him in an informalway. He was quite hilarious during the conversation talkingabout his past experiences in the Society as General. Hesaid jokingly “I am practicing to walk with walking stick”,since it was the second day with walking stick when hevisited our community.

On the Christmas Eve the community had prayerservice followed by dinner. After the Christmas Vigil Massall Jesuits of the neighbouring community were invited forthe snacks. On 26th Dec., both of us with Sch. Ivan fromSpain left for Asturias, a city situated at the sea shore. TheJesuit community over there generously accommodated usfor one week. Ivan as our guide, we could convenientlymove around. We enjoyed the special dinner of the placeon the eve of 31st Dec. and also on the New Year Day (1Jan) with the family of Ivan. On 2nd Jan. we came back toour respective communities.
