Tattooing vehicles. Collecting in-flight

sick bags. Fork bending. What do

these have in common? They’re all

strange hobbies that people have. But your

hobby needn’t be strange to be impressive.

Charity likes sewing.

When Charity learned that rescue groups

in Australia were needing pouches and bat

wraps, she thought, I can do this!

During the huge bushfires in Australia,

many orphaned marsupials (such as kanga-

roos and koalas) were left without the

mother’s pouch they need in order

to grow. Injured bats also needed

wraps to help them heal. Charity

made 40 pouches and 30 bat

wraps.

During the coronavirus out-

break, she also sewed face masks

for hospitals that didn’t have

enough to keep their doctors and

nurses safe.

Dia likes playing video games.

Dia was getting ready to play a game

online with 17-year-old Aiden when she

heard what sounded like someone having a

seizure.

“Are you OK?” Dia asked. When Aiden

didn’t respond, she alerted emergency per-

sonnel, who sent an ambulance to his home.

Whatever your preferred pastime, God

can use you to have a positive influence in

the world—and that’s pretty impressive!

TRUTHBOOTHBy Tompaul Wheeler

Why do people get baptized? What difference does it make?

Being baptized is one way we mark our lives as committed to Jesus. It declares that we’ve “died” *

to our sinful life—and been reborn in Christ.

*Romans 6:2-4†Matthew 28:19, 20

ALTHOUGH He never sinned, Jesus was baptized as an example for us—and He commanded His followers

to teach and baptize others.†

He had never teased Shaniqua, but he hadn’t stood up for her, either.

Deon and the

girl with the

wrinkled black dress

D eon, there’s something I want you to read here in the paper,” Deon’s mom somberly announced. “ You’d better sit down.”

Deon sat on the couch and grabbed the paper. As soon as he saw Shaniqua’s name, a flood of memories overwhelmed him.

S haniqua stood out on her first day of school. Not only because she was the new girl, but because she was the only girl in a dress—a much-too-long wrinkled black

dress. Her bushy mess of hair completed her look.Deon couldn’t help staring at her. Fortunately, he was be-

hind her, where she couldn’t see him staring. But the girls up front looked back at her and shook their heads.

“Something smells a little overripe in here,” a girl named Laqueta whispered loudly.

“That ‘something’ wouldn’t be sporting black wrinkles, would it?” Ariana snickered.

Deon burst out laughing, as did several others. “Excuse me!” Mrs. Deming interrupted. “It needs to

quiet down in here.”It had gotten quiet, but the teasing didn’t stop.

Shaniqua came to school with many other strange combi-nations of clothing. A few times she even wore the same outfit

twice in a row! Who does that? Deon thought.

In the cafeteria Demarco, Malik, and Chikae sang, “Shaniqua, I think yuh stink, yeah.” Deon laughed at the lyrics and guys who

couldn’t carry a tune. But Shaniqua left her half-eaten plate of food and disappeared into their classroom.

But even the classroom wasn’t a safe haven for Shaniqua. There the the kids would compete to see who could say the

most sarcastic, evil things about Shaniqua. It wasn’t just words that were hurled at Shaniqua. She

tried to ignore the boys throwing spit wads at her. But there was no avoiding the bucket of water that was poured on her when she thought she was alone and safe in a bathroom stall.

Deon sometimes wondered at the words “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me” as he noticed Shaniqua’s real tears that were the result of the constant put-downs.

What’s in Your Food? The food we eat is often made from a variety of interesting and unexpected

ingredients. Here are a few examples that you may not have known about:

1. CinnamonCinnamon is a delicious spice. But where does

cinnamon come from? Basically, it’s tree bark! Really! It’s scraped off and dried and ground up into a pow-der. I wonder how it was discov-ered. I get around, but I’ve never walked up to a tree, cut off a piece of bark, and put it in my mouth!

2. Natural Red 4All of us are attracted to colorful food and candy, but have

you ever wondered about that color? Well, if you’ve ever seen an ingredient called “Natural Red 4” on a package of food or drink, you’re going to be surprised what it’s made of. This ingredient, also known as “carmine,” is actually made from dried insects.

3. Phosphoric AcidWait a second—acid? Isn’t that bad? Well, phosphoric acid is used for a variety of functions, including rust removal. It’s also found in certain kinds of batteries. Did I forget to mention that it’s also an ingredient in many sodas and colas? How do you think soda gets its tangy flavor? Now you know (and probably wish you didn’t).

Page 7: Camping · 7/4/2020  · This week you’ve heard about all different types of emotions. You’ve read about people in Bible times who experienced very real emotions. Now what? Hopefully,

4. Xanthan GumNo, this isn’t a new kind of chewing gum.

It’s a natural ingredient used to thicken foods. If you’ve ever noticed how spices in a salad dress-ing jar seem to float in space, that’s because xanthan gum was used to thicken the oil and water. But how’s it made? It’s made from the bacteria in the black rot that forms on many

vegetables. (At least next time you’re playing a game and need a word that starts with X, you’ll be ready.)

Write the number next to the correct ingredient in the circles near these other products that often have that ingredient too. Answers on p. 27.

You’ve Got Nerve

As many of you know, Guide magazine has a very cool website (guidemagazine.org) with many neat things to do and read. It’s also a place where you can post comments or ask me questions. A reader has asked me to write about the nervous system.

Most of you have electrical outlets and lights all over the walls and ceil-ings of your home. Behind the walls, wires connect all those items to one main electrical panel. The nervous system in your body is similar; it’s basically your body’s electrical wiring system.

Your nervous system is made of nerves that start in the brain and cen-tral spinal cord and that branch out to every other part of your body, sending little messages.

Neurons send these signals through your body at amazing speeds and help all your body parts work together, making sure they’re all doing what they’re supposed to do. Your brain, considered by many to be the most complex organism in the universe, is at the center of the action, connected by as many as 100 billion neurons.

To believe that this could have randomly evolved from nothing is perhaps one of the enemy’s biggest hoaxes. The Bible teaches that we were carefully designed by God.

Page 9: Camping · 7/4/2020  · This week you’ve heard about all different types of emotions. You’ve read about people in Bible times who experienced very real emotions. Now what? Hopefully,

I read recently an article about a bunch of rare turtle fossils found in China.

Here’s part of what it said: “Some 160 million years ago, these turtles had gathered in one of the remaining waterholes during a very dry period, awaiting rain (which came too late). When the water arrived, it came with a vengeance: a river of mud, washing the turtles and sediments along with it and dumping them in one place, as the paleontologists read the site and its layers of stone.”*

The first thing to understand is that fossils do not come with tags that tell what happened or when they hap-pened. Although this article sounds factual, the interpretation is really a guess.

You’ll notice how they’ve told a

story about these turtles gathering at waterholes during a dry period, wait-ing for rain. This may sound realistic, but there is no evidence that it hap-pened that way.

In my opinion, the real facts behind these fossils are simply that mud and water washed these turtles and the sediments to one place. That’s all.

When you realize that all kinds of living creatures and vegetation were quickly buried all over our planet, the evidence points to a global flood. In this case, the interpretation is directly supported by the most reliable book on the planet, the Bible.__________

Callie lugged her sleeping bag and backpack into the cabin as girls excitedly jostled for the best bunks. Spotting an empty bunk in the center of the cabin, she claimed it. Lindy, the girls’ teen coun-

selor, was unrolling her sleeping bag onto the bunk across from hers.“Let’s have our heads together so we can whisper when it’s time for

lights out,” Lindy suggested in a conspiratorial undertone. Callie smiled as they arranged their pillows so their heads would be close.

At lunch that day, Callie wasn’t the only one famished.“I think I need five veggie meatballs,” Cooper said to the kitchen

worker in the serving line. Smiling knowingly, she said, “ You can come back if you want seconds

if you’re still hungry.”At their cabin that night after campfire, flashlight beams were criss-

crossing crazily as girls searched their backpacks to get ready for bed.“Oh, no!” Mackinsy exclaimed. “I forgot my toothbrush!” “I did that once,” Lindy sympathized. “ What did you do?” Mackinsy moaned. “I used my finger all week,” Lindy said.

Camping With the Trinity

While adventuring at the Pathfinder camp on the island of Kauai, Callie began to

understand the mysteries of the three in one.

“Ewwwwww,” a chorus of voices erupted throughout the cabin.“It was a clean finger!” Lindy added quickly, but that probably didn’t

change anyone’s mind. The next morning a recorded trumpet playing a vigorous “Reveille”

jerked every camper awake.

Dear Diary,I’m going to have to plan better if I’m going to have my personal devotions before the day

begins. But better late than never, I suppose!I’ve been reading about Jesus’ life in the book of John. Elder Roberts, my Bible teacher,

says there’s no better way to know the God of heaven than by reading His Word every day.I remember when Elder Roberts told us that. Kyle made a good point. He said, “But I

thought no one can see God! So how can we really know Him?”Elder Roberts reminded us that one of Jesus’ disciples asked that same question, and had

us read about it in John 14:7: “If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him.”

That made so much sense to me! We can know God better by learning more about Jesus. That’s when I began reading about Jesus’ experience on earth. His unselfishness and courage inspire me every day! Tomorrow morning I’ll start using my flashlight to read my Bible in the morning.

Following Mr. Kroff through the woods the next day, the group who wanted to earn the flower honor listened as he identified the native blooms he found near camp.

“ What are these called?” Terese exclaimed, holding tiny multicolored blossoms between her fingers. “They look like a mini bouquet, don’t they?” Callie and Terese picked enough to put in paper cups for the tables in the grub hall.

Callie couldn’t decide what her favorite part of campfire was—the songs they sang with nearly bursting lungs, or the thoughtful devotional by the camp pastor, Elder Matthews. Tonight Elder Matthews had every-one’s attention as he closed his description of Jesus’ trial before Pilate.

“Pathfinders, what will you do with Jesus? Will you accept the life He laid down for you and follow Him?” Elder Matthew’s tone was serious. “Or will you walk away and do your own thing?”

Dear Diary,How could anyone walk away and do their own thing? Jesus suffered so much for us! But as I think about it, I’m remembering last week when Mom had noticed the TV was still

warm after she returned home from town. My brother and I had disobeyed her by watching TV

when she told us not to. “It was Doug’s idea!” I tried to put the blame on my brother. With a look of deep disappointment, Mom’s eyes held my gaze. “But I told you both to keep

the TV off this afternoon.” I am guilty of doing my own thing and trying to blame my brother to excuse my sin of

disobedience. I wish I could go home right now to ask Mom’s forgiveness!

As Callie pushed noisily into her sleeping bag, her mind was drawn home like a magnet. What were Dad and Mom doing? How was Ginger, her Chihuahua, managing without her? A strange sadness suddenly swept over her. Tears welled up in her eyes. The distance between her and home seemed to grow by the second.

As she sniffed back the persistent tears, she was thankful that ev-eryone in the cabin was asleep. Soft snores and heavy breathing sur-rounded her. In desperate loneliness, she pulled her arms out from the sleeping bag and draped them limply over her head. Oh, if she could just stop this silly weeping! Trying to relax, she suddenly felt a hand on hers.

It was Lindy! At first she was embarrassed that someone had heard her. Then her counselor’s sympathy brought on fresh tears. Lindy didn’t know what she was sad about, but she cared. As Callie’s tears subsided, Lindy gave her hand a pat and a squeeze, and gently withdrew hers.

Dear Diary,I recently read what the Holy Spirit’s work is in John 16— guiding, speaking, and convict-

ing of sin. I’m thankful for all these parts of His work. Last night I was especially thankful for the Holy Spirit’s other name: Comforter. I’m feeling better now!

The two-day hike down into Waimea Canyon wiped Callie out. She had thought the switchback trail would never come to an end! But the spar-

kling river running at the bottom of the canyon had been a welcome reward, and had refreshed everyone for the return hike back to camp.

That night at campfire when Elder Matthews ended his devotional, he led the campers in the Lord’s Prayer.

“Our Father,” he began as usual. Though she had repeated this prayer many times, Callie realized for the

first time that Jesus had directed His disciples to pray to God as “our” Father.

Dear Diary,Is God, the Father, in a position similar to my father? On the days Dad is home from work, sometimes he has a list of duties for each family

member. Everyone works together on different jobs. It’s pretty remarkable how much we ac-complish by the end of each day! So maybe God the Father is the one who organizes the Son and the Holy Spirit in the work of saving people.

Last night as we sang “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus,” I imagined God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit bound together in a way I can’t really understand, and working together on the huge task of saving sinners.

This has certainly been an amazing week camping with the Trinity!

V an Nezza’s giggle was contagious. She picked up a long rolled-up piece

of paper. Balancing it on her shoulder, she pretended to be an important camera girl, filming a story of someone who had given their heart to Jesus after listen-ing to Adventist World Radio. Her bedtime prayers always ended with “And Jesus, when I grow up, can I please work for You through Adventist World Radio?”

V an Nezza’s family had not always known about Adventist World Radio

or the Adventist Church. Many years earlier the priest at her mother’s church had read from the Bible, but she didn’t know much about it. Her father didn’t

believe in God, and he drank a lot of alcohol. One day her mother came home to find him trying to light one of her religious statues on fire.

“ What do you think you’re do-ing?” screamed Van Nezza’s mom. “ You can’t do that! That image of the saint is sacred! You’ll be pun-ished for trying to burn it!”

Her husband staggered as he turned around, laughing. He said, “These saints can’t do me any harm, and they can’t save you either. They are worthless!”

Mom was very upset. She went to bed with anger burning in her heart. However, what her hus-band said kept bothering her. Could he be right? Dropping to her knees, she prayed, “God, is it true that the saints can’t protect

me? Please show me the truth.”That night she had a very

strange dream in which she saw a shining book opened to Exodus 20:8. She had no idea what that meant, but her dream seemed so real that it worried her. Waking her husband, she said, “Get the Bible, Manuel!”

He grumbled and sat up in bed, taking the Bible in his hands. Mom kept her eyes closed so she could picture what she had just seen in the dream. “ What does Exodus 20:8 say? I saw it in my dream.”

Manuel grudgingly found the verse and read, “ ‘Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.’ There, now are you satisfied? Let me sleep!”

“No, please wait. What is that verse supposed to mean?” she asked.

Her husband grumbled, “If you want to know, go find a Seventh-day Adventist Church. But I will tell you this: God’s day is the seventh day, Saturday.”

With that, he rolled over in bed and went back to sleep. Mom looked at him, puzzled. She had no clue that her husband knew anything about religion or God.

What she didn’t realize at the time was that Manuel had actu-ally attended an Adventist church as a child!

Later the next day Mom went to her priest and told him about her dream. She opened the Bible to Exodus 20:8 and asked him about the Sabbath, to which he replied, “Oh, we already changed that.”

She was shocked and wondered how anyone could change God’s Word. She started asking every-one she could find if they knew of a church with a Saturday worship service. Finally one man said, “ Yes, there is a church not too far from here.”

That Sabbath Mom went to an Adventist church along with her children and began Bible studies with the pastor. After getting her husband to join them at church and for Bible studies, her whole family got baptized and started listening to Adventist World Radio.

Y ears went by, and Van Nezza grew up. She was excited when she passed

her college entrance exam and could officially study engineer-ing. The only thing between her and her chosen career was an in-person interview. However, the school held those interviews only on Saturdays, and they refused to reschedule her after she told them she needed to keep the Sabbath.

Find the emoji that shows what Mom was doing when she learned about Exodus 20:8. It’s hiding somewhere in this issue.

Deeply disappointed, she went back home and enrolled at a small local college that didn’t offer engineering. Little by little she began to hang out with stu-dents who didn’t take God seri-ously. Wanting to fit in, she began to do the things they did and strayed from God and the Bible. She knew she was breaking not only God’s heart but her parents’ hearts as well.

But one day in 2016, Van Nezza heard a sermon that made her realize how much Jesus loved her. She decided to give her life back to Jesus and be rebaptized.

Around this time, she started working at a call center to earn money. One day, while listening to a sermon, these words stuck with her: “Are you too busy making money that you aren’t taking time to tell others about Jesus?”

Van Nezza remembered her childhood prayer and wished she could work for Adventist World Radio. She thought, I wish there were an Adventist call center where people could call in to learn about Jesus. I would love to pray and study the Bible with them!

Soon after that prayer, Van Nezza

accompanied a friend who was interviewing for a position at Adventist World Radio’s Center for Digital Evangelism (CDE). As she toured the office, she couldn’t believe her eyes: there was an Ad-ventist call center! Young people like her were answering calls, texts, and other social media re-quests for prayer and Bible study. Then an amazing thing happened: the CDE decided to interview Van Nezza for a job.

Fast-forward a few months. Van Nezza sat at her desk at the CDE helping to design an advertise-ment that invited people to learn more about Jesus. She smiled in disbelief. Am I really working for an Adventist World Radio call center? God had heard her child-hood prayer! Now she could work full-time as a digital missionary and help others discover the joy she had found in Jesus!

about it,” Carl insisted. So they knelt. “Dear God,”

Mom said, “I don’t know how You can do it, but if You really are interested in our troubles, please send someone with a car to take Carl to school this morning.”

“Please, God, send a car so Mom will know You care for us,” Carl added.

Hardly had they stood up when there was a knock. Carl opened the door and found Mrs. Ralls standing there. “I’m on my way to the church school, Mrs. Norman,” she said cheerily. “ Would you like me to take Carl with me? It will save you the trip.”

Carl and his mom looked at each other and smiled. Jesus had sent a car!

As soon as Carl was gone, Mom closed the door and bowed her

head. “Thank You, dear God,” she whispered.

But that wasn’t the end! Mom was just pouring the dishwater into the sink when there was another knock on the door. Mrs. McMane had come. “I’m on my way to the church school,” she ex-plained. “I wondered if you might like me to take Carl in for you and save you the trip.”

Two cars for Carl!Mom told Mrs. McMane that

Carl had already gone with Mrs. Ralls. She closed the door and bowed her head again. “Dear Lord,” she prayed, “forgive me for thinking You didn’t care about my problems.”

But even that was not the end! Mom was just finishing the glasses when there was yet another knock on the door. Mom opened the door and found Mrs. Clark stand-ing on the porch.

“I’m on my way to the church school,” Mrs. Clark said. “I thought I’d stop by and see if I couldn’t take Carl with me and save you the journey.”

It was too much for Mom! After she thanked Mrs. Clark and told her what had happened, she fell on her knees.

“Three cars for Carl,” she whis-pered. “I didn’t think He’d send even one, and He sent three.”

This story was adapted from “Three Cars for Carl,” which appeared in the June 15, 1960, issue of Junior Guide.

Once there was a man who grew up in the projects, the worst neighborhood for miles. As a child he was pretty average-looking, even though he didn’t act like the

average boy his age. There was always something about him that made him different. It was as if he always had a purpose for whatever he did. He ended up not making much of himself when you compare him to all the important people of the time. He worked the same humble job his father had worked, and his father before him. Still stuck in the same neighborhood, with the same kids he’d grown up with. But as he approached middle age, something came over him.

Before he had had a purpose for what he did. But now it was if he were on a mission! One day he just left, not even packing his stuff. He left everything—his work, his home, his family, everything. And he began to wander around the country. He became kind of a walking teacher, going around talking to people of all kinds and helping them with their problems. And overnight the man became famous. People followed him around everywhere! They couldn’t get enough of him. He couldn’t get a moment of peace! He went to grab some lunch, and there was a crowd. He went to visit some friends, and there was a crowd. He tried to take a nap, and there was a crowd trying to wake him up. He went

from being a nobody from the ghetto to becoming someone everyone was talking about.

Soon the local government began to feel threatened by this guy’s newfound popularity. They felt he could start a revolution and overthrow all they had worked for. So they began a huge smear campaign. They attacked him on every front, calling him everything from a liar to a lawbreaker to the devil himself. They slowly turned the crowd against him, even got to those closest to him. Near the end one of his very best friends sold him out to the police. And when they came to arrest him, everyone around him turned and ran. So there he was at the lowest, scariest, most vulnerable moment in his life, and he had to face it alone. Soon after—in fact overnight—he was tried, framed, and executed.

During Jesus’ time on earth, He felt every emotion imaginable. He felt love, anger, pain, fear, confusion, frustration, and helplessness—everything you feel. He was picked on and ignored. Then He was praised and glamorized, only to be betrayed and murdered. He was a nobody in a poor neighborhood. Then He became the most famous man in the country. That is why He understands everything you may experience, and He is more than willing to help you. He has your best interest at heart!

AN EVERYDAY MAN

Memory Text: “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10).

Our Beliefs, no. 7, The Nature of Humanity: “Man and woman were made in the image of God with individuality, the

power and freedom to think and to do. Though created free beings, each is an indivisible unity of body, mind, and spirit, dependent upon God for life and breath and all else.”

Read Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, pp. 92, 93.

SABBATH Read this week’s Real-Time Faith story above.

You know that Jesus was exposed to the frailties of human nature and its emotions. However, His strong connection with God shaped His character and sanctified His emotions. So He was able by God’s grace to resist every evil tendency or emotional problem. He became a perfect example for us in how to live and trust God. You know you can go to Him with all your problems. As the hymn “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” encourages us—“Take it to the Lord in prayer.” You

can bring your problems, emotional and otherwise, to Jesus. He is waiting and longing to carry your burdens and give you His peace and the hope of a meaningful life with Him.

Sometimes it seems easier to connect with a friend you can see. But how do you relate to Jesus? What experience can you share with someone about how Jesus truly understands you?

SUNDAY Read John 16:33.

EARLITEEN SABBATH SCHOOL LESSON | LESSON 2: HANDLING EMOTIONS

Jesus came to give us an example of how to live and how to trust and depend on God. He will help us to become the men and women He wants us to be—healthy in body, soul, and mind. When we surrender to Him and allow Him to work in our hearts, we will love ourselves and others.

What are some emotions in your life that you need to ask God to help you deal with?_________________________________________________________________________

On a separate sheet of paper, unscramble the following two verses (from the New King James Version) and answer this question: “If we can’t trust our own feelings, thoughts, and emotions, Whom can we always trust to help us?”

MONDAY Read 2 Corinthians 5:19, 20; 1 Thessalonians 5:23; 1 John 4:7.

TUESDAY Read Philippians 4:13, NKJV.

We can all be overwhelmed by emotions. One minute everything is fine, you’re having a great day. The next minute you open the freezer, and someone has eaten all the ice cream. Your day is shot. Gone is your happy, carefree mood. Now all you can think is Who ate my ice cream?

Sometimes we let our emotions get the best of us. And for no apparent reason we let something as little as ice cream ruin our mood. One of the hardest parts of life is dealing with all the different emotions we feel. It’s tough to understand these feelings and know what to do with them.

Even when we don’t know what we’re feeling, the Bible says, “And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words” (Romans 8:26, NLT).* What a comfort it is to know that Someone out there understands our feelings—even when we don’t!

The following texts are examples of people who had strong emotions. Read the following verses and then write beside each verse what emotions you believe were being felt. Texts are from the New International Version.

“When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him” (Genesis 37:4).

And now, do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you.’ ” “And he kissed all his brothers and wept over them. Afterward his brothers talked with him” (Genesis 45:4, 5, 15).

THURSDAY Read Matthew 11:28. Review the memory text.

FRIDAY Read 2 Timothy 1:7, NKJV.

This week you’ve heard about all different types of emotions. You’ve read about people in Bible times who experienced very real emotions. Now what? Hopefully, you’ll decide to trust God! The important thing to remember in all of this is that Jesus has felt everything you have, and He truly does understand. He lived on earth as a man who experienced a whole range of human emotions.

Remember you have the Creator of emotions ready to help you any time you need Him. All you need to do is give Him a chance—go to God and pray. Tell Him about your feelings, and let Him deal with them. Remember, Jesus invites us to come to Him, and He will give us rest.

When you are in not so good a mood, it can feel as if it lasts forever. It’s pretty easy to dwell on the negative in life and forget about the good that happens. But focusing on the negative takes all the joy out of life. So this week, try to keep track of your ups and downs. When you’re feeling great, write it down. When you just feel like crawling into bed and not getting up, write it down. At the end of the week, look back and remember all those good feelings, because it’s the positive in life that makes life worth living.

“Joseph said to them, ‘Don’t be afraid. . . . You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good . . . , the saving of many lives. So then, don’t be afraid. I will provide for you and your children.’ And he reassured them and spoke kindly to them” (Genesis 50:19-21).

“Deon and the Girl With the Wrinkled Black Dress,” from p. 5

He tried to push the old mem-ory verse out of his mind. “Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another” (Ephesians 4:31, 32, NIV).

In an act of mercy, Mrs. Dem-ing began dismissing Shaniqua five minutes early so the boys couldn’t follow her and heckle her all the way to her house. But the boys would run fast so they could catch up with her and make a nuisance of them-selves. A couple times Deon went along just to watch. No, he never teased her himself, but he laughed along with the others.

A s he read the newspaper article about her, it bothered him that he

had never stood up for her, that he had never said anything in her defense.

He reread the headline “Local House Fire Kills Teen” over and over. Wiping away the tears, he refocused and read, “Shaniqua Lawrence was killed when a house fire destroyed her fam-ily’s home. Tragically, this was the second time a fire took the life of a family member from this household. Years prior to this blaze, another fire took the life of Shaniqua’s mother when the girl was 3 years old.”

Deon felt sick. No wonder

Shaniqua never dressed nice. She didn’t have a mom to help her know how to dress. No won-der her hair was always such a mess. She didn’t have a mother to teach her how to tame it.

Deon thought of all the teas-ing, sarcasm, and hazing that poor girl had endured—and the many times he simply stood by and did nothing. He wished he had done something, anything, to make his classmates stop, but he never did. All he ever did was laugh along with them.

It was too late. Deon couldn’t do anything to help Shaniqua. But it wasn’t too late for Deon. The next time a misfit would join his school, Deon would find the courage to stand up for them. He knew he had to.

Have you ever been in the middle of a dispute? How did it feel? This week we’ll take a peek at a celestial

dispute and the amazing outcome.

It was time for the celestial council meeting with all of God’s heavenly subjects.

Satan, self-appointed prince of the earth, also showed up at the meeting. He was the one who had caused war in heaven. Now he was back.

“ Where have you come from?” God asked.

“From roaming throughout the earth,” replied Satan.

“Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is loyal and honest. He fears me and doesn’t want anything to do with evil.

“Does Job fear you for noth-ing?” Satan asked. “Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread through-out the land. But now stretch out your hand and strike everything

he has, and he will surely curse you to your face.”

“ Very well, then,” God said, “everything he has is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger” (see Job 1:7-12).*

Satan didn’t waste any time. He returned to Planet Earth, thinking to himself that Job would surely deny God if he experienced loss, heartache, and grief.

One day Job was at home thinking about how grateful he was to God for all that he had—houses, land, livestock, good health, family. Suddenly a mes-senger burst through the door, crying, “Master, I’m so sorry to bring you bad news. A group of outsiders, Sabeans, attacked. They stole your livestock from the fields and killed all your servants except me.”

The servant hadn’t even fin-

ished speaking when another messenger came running. “Mas-ter, it was horrible!” he said, fall-ing at Job’s feet. “Fire fell from the sky, and all of your sheep and servants were burned up. I’m the only one who escaped to tell you.”

A third messenger arrived. “Master, the Chaldeans have sto-len your camels and killed your servants!” he exclaimed. “Only I escaped!”

When a fourth messenger ar-rived, Job quickly thought, What now?

“Master, I have terrible news to tell you,” the messenger said, weeping. “All of your sons and daughters were having a party at your oldest son’s home. Suddenly a big wind came in from the desert and hit the house. It collapsed, and every-one died. I’m the only one left from the household.”

Up until this time Job hadn’t said nor done anything. Now he tore his robe and shaved his head in mourning. Then, to his servants’ surprise, he fell on the ground and worshipped God.

Satan, who had been watching with satisfaction, frowned as he witnessed Job’s faithfulness. He decided to change Job’s test at the next council meeting.

God was ready for Satan. “Have you considered my ser-vant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears

God and shuns evil. And he still maintains his integrity, though you incited me against him to ruin him without any reason.”

“Skin for skin!” Satan replied. “A man will give all he has for his own life. But now stretch out your hand and strike his flesh and bones, and he will surely curse you to your face.”

“ Very well, then,” the Lord replied to Satan. “He is in your hands; but you must spare his life” (Job 2:3-6).

Satan caused Job to be cov-ered with itchy, painful sores from the top of his head to the bottom of his feet. The sores oozed and then developed hor-rible scabs that left deep scars. Job sat hour after hour in the ashes, mourning his dead chil-dren and scraping his sores.

Finally his wife said to him, “Are you still maintaining your integrity? Curse God and die!” (verse 9).

But Job wouldn’t say anything against God. Instead he asked, “Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?” (verse 10).

Although Job had many ques-tions, he believed that God could use anything that hap-pened to him for good—even if the purpose was to show the world Satan’s evil workings. Thus people would acknowl-edge God’s loving character and would learn to trust Him. Job trusted in God’s loving care.
