“Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life:...” John 5:39.

    3, Ajele Street, Lagos, Nigeria

    YEAR 2017

THEME: THE FAITHFUL GOD DEUT. 7:9

God's choosing of Israel was motivated by His love for them (Deut, 7:7-8). Moreover, God promised to faithfully keep His covenant and show mercy to generation after generation of “them that love him and keep his commandments” (cf 6:4-9). Not only was God's love contingent upon this response of love and obedience, but also their prosperity (v13-14), good health, (v15), and military success (v 16). God promises to keep His commitments to His people “for a thousand generations” (Deut 7:9). He reminds them that He didn't free them because they deserved it or because they were the largest nation on earth, but because He loved them. Many people are facing hardships. You may be one of them. In fact, may be life itself has been nothing but one, long grueling hardship for you for as long as you can remember. I pray that something in this writing, and indeed, in the course of discussing the theme of the year, might bring some comfort for you. There is little else in life that hurts as deeply as feeling as though God is not faithful. Let's address the very MOST important issue regarding God's faithfulness. The Hebrew word translated “faithfulness” means “Steadfastness, firmness, fidelity.” The opposite of being faithful is to be ever. Changing or wishy-washy. Faithfulness is an attribute of God. He is the definition of faithfulness in a sense. It is the nature of God to be faithful and He is. Faithfulness is therefore a characteristic of the body of Christ and one that all Christians should have and practice. Why should Christians or anyone for that matter, obey God? Why should we trust God and do what He says? The answer to these and similar questions is simply that God is faithful. Because God is faithful, we van trust Him and therefore obey Him. We are confident in the times of trouble because we known that God is faithful. The promises of God are real and his faithfulness will never fail us. We have nothing to fear as believers because the power of God is always with us. Yet those words may ring hollow when you are in a crisis situation. You may be dealing with a serious illness for which there is no cure. You may be struggling with financial difficulties and don't know where to turn. You may be suffering the pain of a broken marriage or relationship and have lost all hope for the future. Whatever the struggle, it can be hard to stand in your faith when your circumstance seems hopeless. We read in proverbs 24:10, “if you falter in times of trouble, how small is your strength;” The truth is that those who believe in the finished work of Jesus Christ have limitless power to defect anything that comes against them. In I John 5:4, we are told that everyone born of God overcomes the world. The forces of evil cannot conquer a child of God. The devil himself knows that he is unable to harm a hair on your head, but only what God permits. And God will only allow that struggle or pain for which He has prepared in advance to bring you through to victory. Each trial we endure is permitted to help us to develop the perseverance that we need to stay strong in this life so that our faith may be proved genuine. Christ did not suffer and die to lose the battle. His death paid the price for our victory and it cannot be taken from us. It does not matter what trouble you may be experiencing, God is willing and able to bring you through it. He alone can turn a painful situation into something that will be used for good with a reward that will last forever. Here then, is the crux of the whole matter; What God is looking for are people who will be faithful to HIM! especially in the midst of their trials, like Job was. God may allow you to stay in the painful place you are in emotionally (and may be physically) until you determine within yourself to declare that God is faithful to me, and that's the beginning and the ending of the matter!

    GREAT IS THY FAITHFULNESS

    1. Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father; there is no shadow of turning with thee; thou changest not, thy compassions, they fail not; as thou hast been thou forever will be.

Refrain: Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see; all I have needed thy hand hath provided; great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

    2. Summer and winter and springtime and harvest, sun, moon and stars in their courses above join with all nature in manifold witness to thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.

    3. Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth thy own dear presence to cheer and to guide; strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow, blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

    BIBLE STUDY

    9.00 A.M. – 9.45 A.M

    LENT 3

19TH MARCH, 2017. Theme: Situations Calling for Healing Of The Land. Topic: Ungodliness and Anti-Christ Tendencies/Activities Text: II Timothy 3:1-9 Aim: To be determinded and courageous to Stand against ungodly and anti-Christ tendencies/activities that scriptures warn will characterize the last days. Introduction The last days are characterized by increasing ungodliness with anti-Christ activities buffeting the Church. What is ungodliness? It is the exclusion of God from our lives; denying, disobeying or walking against Him; being not devoted to God; and having no consideration or reverence for God in our living. A key feature of it is the attempt to rubbish Christ’s redemptive work of grace-His person, plans, programmes especially the “parousia” (Second Coming). But if Christ did not die, then our faith is vain; if Christ is not coming rapture His Church, then we can live as we please-according to our flesh and the world. These will certainly produce unholiness. Study Guide 1. Identify and discuss the characteristics of the last days as listed in II Tim. 3:1-9. 2. Why and how Christian sliding into ungodliness and

anti-Christ tendencies a. The world, Rom 1:20-25; II Cor. 4:4. b. Individual believers, I John 2:15-17; I Cor. 10:1-11 c. The Church, d. Church leaders. 3. Identify and discuss the forces and factors that promote

ungodliness and anti-Christ tendencies in society and in the Church, I Tim. 4:1, 2; Col. 2:20-23; Matt. 24:12.

    4. What does God expect of the Church and how may that be done? James 4:7; Eph. 6:11; II Tim. 2:16; II Cor.6:17 Isa. 52:11.

Conclusion There are certain things in these last days that a child of God may not be able to do anything about, except to pray hard and wait in hope on God for deliverance and help. Our study tells us much about this: to gird our loins however, to fight ungodliness as much as God enables us, and being mindful of what we are taught in Gal. 6:1, 2 and Matt. 13:28, 29. Food For Thought If no one joins me, still I will follow Memory Verse - Matt. 24:12.

    TODAY’S MEDITATION

THE WAY OF THE CROSS “And he said to all, “if any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me” Luke 9:23. I reason that Jesus taught that there is only one track for those who believe in Him, namely, the discipleship track. While we are all at differing levels of growth in the process of following Jesus, if you are not His disciple, you are not a Christian. Every believer is called to be completely dedicated to furthering His Kingdom in accordance with the various gifts He has entrusted to you. If self is at the centre of your life and you are just using Jesus to fulfill self, you are not a Christian Christians follow Jesus, which is diametrically opposed to living for self. In Luke 9:23. Jesus sets forth three requirements for following Him. 1. To follow Jesus requires repudiating a self-centred life. The word

“deny” is the same word used of Peter’s denial of Jesus. It means to repudiate, renounce, or disown. Jesus was not talking about denying yourself some little pleasure, like giving up chocolate or coca cola for lent. He was talking about a complete way of life involving a renunciation of living for your own selfish interests and an embracing of living for the sake of Christ and the gospel.

The verb tenses of the three commands in our text indicate that denying self and taking up one’s cross are basic decisions that result in a life of continual following of Jesus. Self-denial means “turning away from the idolatry of self centeredness and every attempt to orient one’s life by the dictates of self-interest. It means to give up the right to control your life and to give that right to Jesus Christ. To be a Christian is to deny self as both Saviour and Lord and to enthrone Jesus in that place. This begins at the moment of salvation and continues throughout your Christian life. But if it has not begun, you have not become a Christian, since Jesus puts this requirement at the outset of a decision to follow Him.

    2. To follow Jesus requires daily death to self. “If any man would

come after Me, let him ..... take up his cross daily” (9.23b). Many Christians think that to bear their cross means putting up with a difficult mate or with a painful malady, such as arthritis. But taking up your cross is not an unavoidable trial that you passively submit to. Jesus says that it must be a daily thing that we actively choose to embrace. It starts on the thought level: you must deny and forsake sinful thoughts and attitudes, and replace them with godly thoughts and attitudes as revealed in Scriptures. If you deal with sin on the thought level, then it never gets any further. When greedy thoughts invade your mind, you instantly judge them and pray, “Lord, I don’t want to desire the things of this world that is passing away, but to seek first your kingdom.” Thus, following Jesus requires a basic decision to repudiate self-centred living and to put on the cross every day.

    3. To follow Jesus requires ongoing submission to Jesus as Lord. “If

any man would come after Me, let him ..... follow me”(9:23c). It’s a present imperative, pointing to a continual process of walking behind Jesus, going where He goes, doing what He does. It means not calling our own shots or doing our own thing, but submitting to Jesus’ command and doing His thing. We must submit to Him and obey Him and His Word if we would follow Him. May be you are thinking, “Self-denial sounds so negative!” Let me remind you, I didn’t come up with this. Jesus did! In the short term, self-denial is difficult and not very pleasant. But there are eternal blessings in store when you follow Jesus on the path of the cross.
