Fred Barr: Pikes Peak EntrepreneurCalled the “Trail Master of the Rockies”, Fred Barr built over 30 miles of trails on the East side of Pikes Peak. Most of his trails still provide recreational opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts and without his efforts access to and the enjoyment of Pikes Peak would not be what it is today. Reserve your copy today: $14.95 + tax.

CLARIFICATIONAt our December 1st member appreciation event we announced PPEZ donors would receive complementary memberships and brewfest tickets; after consulting with El Paso County Economic Development we regret we cannot do this without affecting the amount of credit you would receive. Thus for 2018 there will be no complementary memberships nor brewfest tickets. Thanks

COLORADO’S 10TH MOUNTAIN DIVISION

by Colonol Tom Duhs

The 10th Mountain Division was established in July 1943 at Camp Hale near Leadville. The Division went to Italy at the end of 1944 and ended the war there on May 2, 1945.

The Colorado 10th Mountain Division, a World War II group of moun-taineer skiers, were trained and employed to fight Germans in Italy.

Everyone is welcome! The event is co-sponsored by the Pikes Peak Library District and the Manitou Springs Heritage Center.

Join local Manitoids for this old fashioned event of tossing those left over fruitcakes! Fruitcakes will be available to rent. Local bakers will compete for the title of Fruitcake King or Queen and the community will determine who makes the best organic, non-GMO, or natural, wonderful fruitcake.

Cost: Donation of one non-perishable food item will benefit a local food pantry.

A Warming Center will be provided by the Manitou Springs Heritage Center, a proud co-sponsor of the event. Come in out of the cold, check out our exhibits, and have some hot cocoa and other treats.

M A K I N G S P A C EWe are trying to clear out our storage garage. There are a significant number of volumes of the Colorado Springs Gazette - circa late 1890’s through 1920’s. If you would like to get a copy, contact the Heritage Center and we can show you what years/months are remaining. A small donation would be appreciated.
