Local Women’s Association Donates $17K to Benefit Breast Care Center Patients

The Willow Fork Ladies Tennis Association recently donated $17,000 to Houston Methodist Breast Care Center at West. The money, raised through its annual breast cancer awareness fundraiser Pretty in Pink, will help patients who need support for breast cancer related issues.

“We are so thankful for the continued support and generosity of these women who gave their time and effort to make this donation for our patients,” said Wayne Voss, CEO of Houston Methodist West Hospital. “I’m certain that many of our patients will benefit from this donation.”

Houston Methodist Breast Care Center at West provides women the most advanced options and comprehensive services for breast health, including digital mammography, breast ultrasound, breast MRI, ultrasound biopsies, stereotactic biopsies and MRI-guided biopsy.

“Our women’s group is very community-minded and it is a priority that our efforts benefit women right here in our community,” said Allyson Hoag of the Willow Fork Ladies Tennis Association.

Houston Methodist West Hospital offers nearly 200 beds and access to the most innovative medical and surgical care available, including robotic and minimally invasive surgery, full-spectrum heart care, state-of-the-art imaging, cancer care, labor and delivery with a level II neonatal ICU, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics and sports medicine, outpatient rehabilitation and 24/7 emergency services.

Harmony Science AcademyHigh Research Project Reaches For The Stars

A research project from Harmony Science Academy High-Houston will blast off this fall, bound for the International Space Station (ISS), after being accepted as one of only eleven projects in the semi-annual Student Spaceflight Experiments Program (SSEP).

Four HSA-High students involved in the project will study the regeneration of flatworms (planarians) in microgravity. The worms will be split in two, with one half sent to ISS and the other kept on Earth. The rate of regeneration between the two halves will be compared once the project returns. Principal investigator, Sophomore Matthew Vuong, said they chose to submit the regeneration project because it could reveal how to study the growth of human organs in the same environment.

Vuong, along with co-investigators Ben Appiah, Richard Gomez, Bassam Razzaq, Isaiah Ogunmaken, and teacher-sponsor Michael Bowling, travel to Washington, DC later this month to present their proposal at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum. The worms will subjected to tests before being prepared for launch and delivery to ISS sometime early next year. The students plan to attend the launch of Mission 10 when that date is confirmed.

As part of SSEP, students from across the U.S. and Canada design and propose real experiments to fly to low Earth orbit. Students can design experiments in diverse fields, including: seed germination, crystal growth, physiology and life cycles of microorganisms (e.g. bacteria), cell biology and growth, food studies, and studies of micro-aquatic life. The program, founded in 2010 to encourage student exploration and the joy of learning, is open to students from grade five through their senior year of college.

Harmony Public Schools wishes to acknowledge the following sponsors who made this project possible: Center for the Advancement of Science In Space (CASIS), Subaru of America, Google, The Texas Space Grant Consortium, Race to the Top, and Houston Fertility Institute-IVF Clinic.

Federal Disaster Declaration Granted For Texas Counties

The President has granted Governor Greg Abbott’s federal disaster request for Individual Assistance for all 12 counties affected by the recent flooding, including: Austin, Brazoria, Brazos, Fort Bend, Grimes, Hidalgo, Hood, Montgomery, San Jacinto, Travis, Waller, and Washington.

Public Assistance Category B (Emergency Protective Measures) for local and state response costs and sheltering was also granted. Category A (Debris) remains on hold as water continues to recede, and pending additional damage assessments.

“I would like to thank the President and FEMA for their quick response in granting assistance to those affected by the severe weather and flooding of the past couple weeks,” said Governor Abbott. “Texans have always risen to meet the challenges they face and this time will be no different. With this latest development Texans can now begin the process of rebuilding their lives after experiencing some of the worst flooding in recent history.”

Additional counties may be added to the Governor’s request for assistance once they meet the threshold required by the federal government to request federal disaster aid.

Ask the Expert– Choosing a Funeral Home or Cemetery

Sherry Ahart-Davies Location Manager, Katy Funeral Home

Q: What should I look for when choosing a funeral home or cemetery? A: The funeral home or cemetery you choose help you design a meaningful memorial that truly celebrates the life it represents. Whether you are in need of immediate assistance or interested in learning more about preplanning options, look for these basic characteristics: • Qualied and caring professionals that

will take the time to listen, address your concerns and work within your budget. Offering various packages allows you to select arrangements at the right price and the best value.

• A funeral home or cemetery with a good reputation within your local and business community and with grounds, roads and buildings that are in good physical condition.

• A full-service provider that can pro-vide a range of funeral and cemetery options. From catering to cremation memorialization, look for a provider that will help you plan every detail of a personal, memorable tribute.

• A funeral home or cemetery that adheres to the law by providing you with a clear, itemized list of prices for merchandise and services offered and chosen.

Q: Do you have any other advice about making final arrangements? A: In my experience, it’s benecial to choose a funeral home or cemetery in advance. Making your arrangements before the time of need helps to ease emotional and nancial stress for your loved ones, and you can have true peace of mind in knowing your nal wishes have been followed. Look for a provider that will help you plan every detail of a personal, memorable tribute.

Thirty-four percent of Houston children are considered overweight or obese compared to 29 percent of the general youth population, according to the Houston Department of Health and Human Services. Furthermore, obese children can suffer from low self-confidence, which is correlated to lower test scores, more absences, and a path that leads to a low-income job as an adult, according to a 2012-14 report from CHILDREN AT RISK.

In response to these facts, the YMCA of Greater Houston partnered with Texas Children’s Hospital (TCH) and Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) to develop a specialized summer day camp in Fort Bend County. The camp’s third session began on June 13 and will last four weeks.

At Healthy Kids For Life, kids are introduced to powerful tools for healthy living while experiencing the fun of a YMCA summer day camp. Each day, campers receive three meals and several snacks totaling 1,800 calories. All meals are planned by Texas Children’s Hospital dieticians.

“In addition to learning about healthy foods, portion control and exercise, kids who attend the camp have established

strong relationships with other kids with similar struggles,” said YMCA Director of Community Health Lharissa Jacobs. “The bonds that form can be very motivating for kids. Many make friends for life and help each other stay in check.”

The camp provides: • A positive, non-judgmental

environment where kids can make lifelong friendships and feel comfortable relating to others with similar weight struggles

• Sessions with wellness coaches who provide interactive lessons on appropriate portion sizes, self-esteem, and smart food choices

• Family Fridays will have tips for parents on healthy eating for the entire family, including healthy cooking demonstrations, family physical activity

• Unlimited support though a parent liaison and Texas Children’s Hospital providers.

The camp is for children 10-14 years old that have a Body Mass Index (BMI) at or above the 95th percentile for their gender and age. Scholarships are available to those who need them.

Those interested can e-mail [email protected] or visit the Fort Bend Family YMCA, 4433 Cartwright Road, in Missouri City.

Amidst a rainy backdrop, Discovery Park officially opened and was dedicated to the Brookshire-Katy Drainage District (BKDD) Saturday, June 4 at 9 a.m. As Waller county’s newest attraction for youth and families, the highly anticipated opening of Discovery Park united close to 200 community members, civic leaders and children. The park is open daily from dawn to dusk and offers a rocket-themed playground, 60-foot by 60-foot pavilion, community garden and soccer field.

The Brookshire Youth Foundation (BYF), the organization behind the development and establishment of Discovery Park, presided over the dedication ceremony and thanked the BKDD for their long-term commitment to the park.

“It has been a tremendous journey to arrive at this point, and the future for Discovery Park holds limitless bright possibilities,” Reverend Dottie Dumas, BYF Board President, said.

Raymond Dollins, BKDD Board President, accepted a plaque commemorating the dedication and thanked the BYF for their role in creating Discovery Park.

Headlining the dedication was NASA Astronaut and U.S. Navy Captain Barry “Butch” Wilmore. From November 2014 to March 2015, Wilmore served as commander on Expedition 42 of the International Space Station. He encouraged the youth to pursue their dreams and shared how he applied to NASA four times before he was accepted.

Wilmore spoke to the audience about his quest to become an astronaut and the curiosity that has been a driver for his success.

“My first word was not dad or mom,” Wilmore said. “It was why. I was always curious about how things work, and I think that just perpetuated into life. To have an understanding and to figure out how things operate, you have to know math and science disciplines.”

Plans are currently underway to integrate Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) learning opportunities

throughout the park.Discovery Park’s (inter)stellar Founding

Star, Commander and Mission Specialist sponsors were recognized with a plaque for their generosity. Their investment provided substantial support towards the development of the park.

Founding Star sponsors include Stewardship Wealth, Cotton Gin International, The Hovas Family and the Montgomery Family Foundation. Commander sponsors, donors who have contributed $10,000 or more, include H.D.H Instruments, Texas Automotive Muscle, McDugald-Steele and Teal Construction Company. Mission Specialist sponsors, those who have given between $5,000 and $9,999, include the United Way of Greater Houston Community Building Grant, Hillsman & Vahalik, P.C. Certified Public Accountants and Vahalik & Vahalik, P.C. Attorneys.

Although not recognized at the opening, but certainly appreciated, are the park’s Flight Engineer sponsors, those who have given between $1,000 and $2,499. These donors include Severn Trent, Saturn Machine, Brookshire-Katy Drainage District, West I-10 Chamber, Triple-G Nursery and La Quinta Inn and Suites.

Discovery Park is located at 4421 5th Street, at the corner of Bains and 5th Street, just South of the Cotton Gin. For more information about sponsorship or volunteer opportunities, please contact Kim at 281-375-5535.
