What makes a complete street?

A street that provides separate spaces for walking and cycling, and, dedicated lanes for public transport.

Equitable allocation of street space

People will walk in the carriageway if streets do not provide separate space for pedestrians.

Streets with adequate space for walking and other activities is safe for pedestrians and allows smoother motor vehicle movement.

We need footpaths for people.

City should be designed for people rather than cars

Footpaths are a crucial element of a transport system’s infrastructure.

Footpaths are the most important element of a democratic city’s infrastructure.

Chennai Comprehensive Transportation Study has set a goal of increasing walking, cycling and public transport mode share to 85 % of all trips by 2026.

71 BRR project• To construct 71

streets along Bus Route Roads;

• Construction of 26 streets have been completed;

• Construction of 29 streets is on-going;

Selection of streets

Selection of the 71 streets were based on:

• Streets along bus route roads

• High passenger demand routes

• Existing stormwater drainage system installed

Involvement of Architects

• Approximately 15 architectural firms volunteered to design the streets.

• Architects were trained by The Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP).

Capacity building workshops for Architects and city Engineers.

Design Process

• Designs were guided through by the IRC 103;

• Architects prepared the following drawings:– Line-drawings as guidelines for on-site

markings;

– Conceptual drawings based on site conditions;

– Working drawings for contractors.
