Dear Readers,Dear Friends of the Reinhardt Abraham Memorial Foundation,My dear Aviation Colleagues,
This year we are celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the Reinhardt Abraham Memorial Foundation. TheFoundation was set up June 13, 1996 in Berlin by the Boeing Company and Lufthansa in memoriam ofReinhardt Abraham highly regarded Aviation Industry leader at his time.The Foundation’s Charta demands “to foster the further education and training of students and/oryoung German and American graduates in the field of Aviation and Air Transportation”. In pursuit ofthis objective RASf established two programs, the Trainee Program, allowing students from theTechnical University Berlin (TUB) to work six months within Boeing’s Engineering Organisation and theStudent Exchange Program offering scholarships to students of the TUB and the University ofWashington at each other’s school.
Now, after 10 years of existence, did RASf meet its objective? The answer clearly is yes: 60 studentshave been supported, e.g. about 6 each per year, among them 36 Trainees and 24 ExchangeStudents! However, the program’s success is not only measured by numbers. It’s real value ismeasured by the friendships built between the students and their international colleages and teachersin Engineering and Academia and by experiencing a different culture and work environment.The experience gained pays off significantly in their subsequent professional engagement and career.The many former RASf students already working in the Aviation Industry confirm this as a real asset.
I wish fullheartily that RASf will be enabled to continue its success story over the next decade andbeyond. Myself, after 11 years of my Chairmanship of the Deutsche Lufthansa Berlin Foundation,home of RASf, did retire in June this year. It was very rewarding to me to have had the opportunity todevelop RASf to its current state thanks to the many supporters in particular from the BoeingCompany and Lufthansa, as well as from the Universities involved, and last but not least also thanksto the individuals having been in charge of organizing the programs as an “extra” to their normal dailyworkscope.
Good luck for the future and wellbeing to all of you, friends of RASf, students and colleages and alsoto my esteemed successor Bernhard Conrad who shares fully my RASf enthusiasm!Dr.Gerwin DiengerRet. Chairman of DLBS

One of the most exciting days in my life waswhen I got the news that I was chosen totake part in the RASF Trainee Program atThe Boeing Company. Not quite a year laterwe arrived in Seattle, that even welcomed uswith some sunshine, on September 4th,2005. With the help and advice of the RASFsummer trainees and Michelle Colby fromBoeing Human Resources it was not difficultto settle in and get organized.
I had heard many great things about theBoeing trainee program and was lookingforward to my first day at work with a lot ofexcitement, but also a little bit of anxiety:What would be my assignment for the nextsix months, and would I be able to handle it?As it turned out, the task that I had for myinternship could not have been moreinteresting and exciting at all. I was part ofthe CFD and Geometry group within BoeingCommercial Airplanes' research unit ET&R Enabling Technology and Research inRenton, where I worked in the CFDsubgroup, focusing on optimization.
For the six months to come, my task was toexplore the benefit of using second orderinformation in optimization codes developedat the Boeing Company. I investigated theinfluence of supplying true hessian, i.e.second derivative, information and differentapproximations to the hessian on theoptimization process. Part of the process wasto develop a model problem that reflectedimportant properties of aerodynamicoptimization problems such as wing design,
that was wellposed and subject toreasonable constraints. During the numericalexperiments it turned out that the presence ofshocks required further investigation, so forthe second half of my internship the focus ofmy research shifted towards optimization ofshocked flows. During the work on thisassignment, I learned a lot from theknowledge and experience of my coworkers,and I am proud that I could contribute to thisproject.
I am looking back at a wonderful time inSeattle. I made new friends and took homelots of good memories. I also greatly enjoyedSeattle as a city and the many outdooractivities the Pacific Northwest has to offer:Hiking, Skiing, Snowshoeing, WhaleWatching…Unforgettable also my visit to Vancouver,B.C., and the road trip to San Francisco.
I would like to say "Thank You" to the manypeople I worked with for an unforgettabletime at The Boeing Company, especially mymanager, Walt Howard, and my mentor,Venkat Venkatakrishnan. I greatly enjoyedbeing part of the team, the friendly andsupportive work atmosphere and thechallenges of real world optimization. a verybig Thank You to the whole RASf team forproviding this great opportunity. When the idea first came up to go to study inthe US, I didn’t know much about how goingabroad works. I just had finished the first partof my degree and decided that I wanted tosee how university work is done in othercountries. The UW, the University ofWashington, has an excellent reputation, so Iapplied for that university – and the first thingI learned was that an exchange means animmense amount of paperwork. So I had towork myself through these piles of paper, butin the end, I finally was on my Lufthansa flightto Portland, OR to start my exchangeprogram in Seattle.I had seen the UW campus on photos on thenet, but when I first set a foot on it, I was justamazed how huge it was. But pretty soon Ifelt comfortable at my new university andthanks to the great help of Wanda Frederick,the grad student advisor, I had no problemsto organize my studies. I decided to attendclasses in fields that are not offered at myhome university in Berlin (TUB), such asplasma physics. This course offered me thepossibility to learn about advanced spacepropulsion systems and a field of fluidmechanics that was completely new to me.Other classes I attended were more relatedto my studies at the TUB, i.e. PhysicalGasdynamics, Physics of Inviscid Flow andComputational Fluid Dynamics. In addition tothat, I worked with Professor Breidenthal, afluid mechanics professor, who was my
advisor for the theses with the title “BoundaryLayer Turbulence Measurements near aPersistent streamwise Vortex” I worked onduring my time at the UW. It is him who Ihave to thank the most for making my twoquarters at the university very productiveones.But of course, my time in the States wasn’tonly about studying. I took my time to visitWashington D.C. and New York and – duringthe holidays season – did a three weeks,5000 miles trip through some of the SouthWestern States of the US.I’m now back home to Berlin for four monthsand only some more months away fromfinishing my degree. Looking back, it isamazing how much more I learned from myseven months of living in Seattle than Iexpected when I first thought about goingthere.Ending, I want to say a huge thank you toRASf team and especially Marianne Grütjenfor giving me the opportunity to have thisgreat time.

What do you do, if you start knowing youruniversity better than your best friend? Right,you try out something new. There were moreopportunities than I would have thought and Ipretty soon laid my eyes on the University ofWashington in Seattle. Of course receiving ascholarship always makes things a lot easier,but money isn't everything. I don't know if Iwould have managed the organization andpaperwork without the great help from RASfin Hamburg.
Once I received the tickets, I knew that theadventure of going west would start prettysoon. I can very well remember the last weekin Berlin being very stressful.The first mission in the US was to find aplace to live, register at the UW and plenty ofother little things that would be too timeconsuming to list.But once that mission was accomplishedthere was plenty of time to make new friendsand live the American life, realizing that theypretty much do and "have the same stuff thatwe have over here, only theirs is a littledifferent" (Quote from Pulp Fiction).At the UW opportunities are endless. Due tothe different role the university plays inamerica in comparison to Germany, thecampus is the center of social activity. Fromsport activities like sailing, tennis, soccer and
basketball, to parties which take place allover the campus, to eating out, meetingfriends to watching the UW Huskies Footballand Basketball Team, life is never boring onan American campus especially not on thisone.
Of course there was also quite a lot ofstudying going on as well. All the classes Itook during my two quarters at the Universityof Washington were offered by theAeronautic and Astronautical Departmentand dealt with control design and theroy. Ialso took a mathlike controls class which Ienjoyed very much, because of thefundamentals of control design that weretaught by Prof. Ly.However, mainly I wasworking together with Prof. Rysdyk, trying toimpliment controls in an autopilot model of anA300, which was fully modeled in a MatlabSimulink environment. Since I have neverworked that close with a professor I learned agreat deal about system behavior, especiallyin the non linear case.
Thanks to Prof. Rysdyk, the courses hetaught and the research project we workedon, I now finally know which area of expertiseI want to study and I roughly have an ideawhat my future job should look like.Toconclude this letter I once more want to thankRASf and all the people involved for givingme that very special opportunity to visitingSeattle and the UW for one of the mostadventurous times of my life. A time which Ialways will remember.

It is a flight from one place to another likethousends this day, September 9th 2005,somewhere in the world. However, being inthe sky is an unique moment for humansfrom different nations, different cultures, onthe way to their travel destinations, businesspartners, friends and families. A flight isalways special for everyone and for me aswell. It is the begin of something new, leavingfamily, old friends and well known places in aswap for working and living a couple month inan unkown city – Seattle, WA. Proud forgetting this opportunity, curiosity andpleasent anticipation is in me, but alsouncertainess about the coming challenges.Starting with two very busy weeks oforganizing of all the necessary stuff for livingin a new country I finally found my new homein Wallingford in Seattle. In advance Boeingand RASf did an excellent job finding aproper trainee position for me. Therequirements matched perfectly with myalready gained knowledge and my personalinterests. The Acoustics & Fluid MechanicsTechnology Group carries out research in thefields of aeroacoustics, structural acousticsand flow physics. The researchers are fromall over the world and the roots of about 15nations make this group the mostinternational group in the Boeing Companywith an uncomparable know how. Thedivision Airframe Noise, in which I worked for
the duration of my internship, developsadvanced methods for airframe noisereduction and supports measurementcampaigns for validation and productdevelopment tests, for example for the new787 and 7478. Through providing thePhased Microphone Array technique they areable to locate and identify airframe soundsources. My assignment contained theevolution and design of a software tool for theanalysis of measurement data generated withthe Phased Microphone Array. Toaccomplish that I have successfully extentedmy aeroacoustics engineering skills andaquired a new programming language whatwas faciliated through the excellent supportand supervision from my Boeing colleages. Ibecame a contemporary witness ofremarkable events in the Boeing history –Boeing Commercial Airplanes received a new
airplane order record in 2005 and I waspresent at the delivery of the 5000th 737 inFebruary 2006.
Besides the work at Boeing I spent muchtime with my colleages by hiking, skiing,snowshoeing, climbing or just exploring theNorthwest brewery culture and Seattle. Iwould like to thank all the Boeing guys andthe RASf team who made possible myamazing time in Seattle where I have learntso much in a new environment and havemade friends for life. I appreciate the workand engagement for the Global TraineeProgram which provides us students thegreat opportunity to grab the challenge andgather this awesome experience.Unfortunately, the last months passed bypretty quickly. Now it is time for a flight again,

but I am sure there will be a return, flying isso easy! I am leaving new friends and lookingforward to meet the old – beautiful, madworld!

One may think contemporary Americanmovies are often exaggerative, evenstereotyped and cannot convey a real pictureof the country. However, when on our firstday, while opening an account the bank gotrobbed in our presence, we certainly felt as ifin a Hollywood flick. Fortunately, it didn’tcontinue to be so thrilling.I was deployed in the AerodynamicPerformance – Sales Support Department.Differently than in many other internships,that you have to do in Germany, I was not theGroup Gofer, but received tasks, like any fulltime employee of the department, whichhelped me bit by bit familiarize with allrelevant fields of work of Sales Support, andby which I got into contact with the differenttools from the software tool box. The firstcouple of weeks I received my assignmentsfrom Greg Cox, lead of the “Europeans”, thegroup responsible for all European Airlines.As I was seated with the AsiaPacific Group,my mentor came from that group. With anyquestions or concerns I always turned toJohn Muhic, who had been with the company
less than a year, but was a resource for mewith anything pertaining to the job. PaulOlson, lead of AsiaPacific was well pleasedwith the results of my work, so he started togive me some jobs from his group. By that Ibecame part of the AsiaPacific DevilDucks.My first job was to generate payloadrangecurves. In each case only one parameter waschanged. I got to play around with the TOWor see how an additional bodytank mightchange the diagram. Soon I was entrustedwith a request from a major easternEuropean Airline, a job that should stick withme for several weeks. On the basis of thepresent route net of the airline, it was to beverified, which engine thrust rating should beinstalled on the airplane to be acquired, tocomply with the RWL of the airports used,and whether an additional body tank wouldbe needed. Furthermore, I was to implementroutes, which according to their marketinganalysts should be served. The questionwas, if an airplane, adapted to present need,would be able to serve these routes in aneconomically positive aspect. My contact inthe Sales Department worked closely withme, and even called me when he wasabroad, discussing matters with thecustomer, so I could include their changesinto the route study. So my position wasreally close to the customer. Whatever Iworked on in this job was on the airline’stable within a matter of hours.Another task of the Sales SupportDepartment is to provide the Aeroperf part ofthe guarantees. For the particular airplane lotbound by contract with its respectiveconfiguration and interior, we had toguarantee the TOFL (Takeoff Field Length),LFL (Landing Field Length), MEW (MaximumEmpty Weight) and fuel flow information(internally called NAMS – nautical miles).According to customer preferences theguarantee may include additional points.Whenever the first airplane of an order isdelivered, there has to be written acompliance. I got quite familiar with this kindof document, so that Paul jokingly called methe complianceman. In this paper, you haveto show, that the delivered airplane actuallycomplies with the guarantees give. Since inmost cases the guarantees were written

some years prior, there might have beenchanges in the particular model or even moreflight test data that was implemented into thecalculation could have been added.Therefore it has to be verified, whether theairplane, based on the newest database stilldelivers the performance that has beenguaranteed to the customer.Additionally to these jobs within the SalesSupport Team, my boss Larry Ostrom gaveme the chance, to have a look into theneighbouring group’s work and even performa job on my own in Fleet Support.In my group there were a lot of young faces,so it was easy to find contact also after work.My mentor was a great friend and a viablehelp, when there were problems with the car.Over the summer another intern joined thegroup, and so Greg Loreti became anothercompanion to hang out with. After a couple ofweeks, we were contacted by a Boeingcolleague, who revealed himself as a RAMFalumnus. Jasper Corleis had participated inthe Trainee Program some six years earlierand later was called back into the Boeingteam. From then on he helped with word anddeed and was adopted into our ever growingcircle of friends.A summer in Seattle certainly is anunequalled experience. When we arrived inMarch, it was still rainy, and there wasenough snow in the mountains, that we hitthe slopes a couple of times. It got warmerand dryer pretty soon. The rumour of aneverrainy Seattle was not found true for us.Breathtaking scenery, inciting to one sashayafter another, National Parks that are wortheach visit are just some among the greatsights the Great Northwest. Since there areLow Cost Carriers outbound from Seattle, theentire world is open to you. Thus I spent mybirthday with my host family in Las Vegasthat took me in as a Foreign ExchangeStudent some years ago.
Experience made and friendships formedhave enriched my life. I want to thank theTeam of the Reinhardt Abraham MemorialFoundation for this wonderful opportunity toparticipate in such a great program. I can andwill recommend it to many others.

„You have been selected to participate in theTrainee Program!“ I could hardly believe itand literally jumped of joy. I got going – visa,paperwork, rent termination, thankfullyshoveling stuff to my parent’s, whatever wasnecessary before on March 17th Jork and Iboarded the Lufthansa (oh irony!!) Airbuswhich took us to Portland, OR. A Boeing vantransported us to Renton; we checked in atthe hotel and had dinner with microwave foodfrom WalMart. Next day we got into a bankrobbery; then we bought my trustworthy and

beloved Corolla. Finding an apartment wasnext, and so after a week we were prettymuch settled in, ready for anything and veryexcited about starting the work. After anextensive orientation event I reported to the1016 building in Renton, where I wasassigned to the ET&R AGPS group, asubdivision of Aerodynamics. ET&R is theEngineering, Technology and Researchorganization, and AGPS is – well, it took awhile to grasp what AGPS is. It is a softwarepackage, programming language, geometrymodification tool, pre and postprocessorand grid generator. It is a most powerful toolwhich is applied to many calculation as wellas design processes. I had three main tasks,and all of them dealt with rewriting oldersoftware packages and integrating them intothe AGPS suite. The most important job wasthe enhancement of a tool which preparesthe calculation of aerodynamic data for asimple aircraft model which is first generatedby that tool from just a few parameters. Sucha tool is very important in the preliminarydesign of an aircraft, when only a fewparameters are already defined. I was ablenot only to integrate this tool and give it anew user interface, but also add some majorcapacity like control surface capability.Besides the job at ET&R I had the chance tovisit the different final assembly lines of allthe Boeing aircraft, take a look at the flighttest department, attend the rollout event ofthe 737900ER, watch the LCF arrive for thevery first time – and participate in acertification test flight. There were also a lot of things to do besideswork. The Northwest is a wonderful placewith strikingly gorgeous scenery, all thatgreen stuff and water and mountains. I lovedto drive around, got to see a lot of places. Imade good friends there with whom I couldhang out almost every night, and last but notleast – I learned to fly. Making good use ofBoeing’s Flight Training Incentive Program Iobtained a Private Pilot’s License andenjoyed all the beautiful scenery from above.I concluded the stay with a road trip toHouston, TX, which once and for allconfirmed my opinion that that country just isawesome. I can certainly say that the 6months in Renton were a unique experiencewhich I would not want to miss at all.

In the middle of September I put my feet onthe American continent for the very first timein my life. I didn’t feel tired from the journeywhen I arrived at the airport of Portland,because the flight was good and I couldsleep well. For the first few days I wasexcited and overloaded with impressions.The landscape, the nature, and the city areunbelievably beautiful. No picture can displayit. The people here are unusually friendly,open to and willing to talk to everybody, andbeing ready to help.

The first step in the New World was to find asweet home. Tobias and I decided to shareone apartment. Our predecessor in theprogram did a great job supporting us duringour first weeks. They helped us to settle,gave us first hand advice andrecommendations and introduced us to theirfriends. I am very thankful for theirassistance. They made our transition veryeasy and accelerated the setup process towork as global trainee at Boeing.
For more than one month I work in the CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamic) High LiftGroup at Boeing Commercial Airplanes inRenton. My Group develops and testsdifferent CFD tools and packages, which willbe used in future to create better, optimizedand efficient aircraft. More precisely, mytasks are to simulate an airplane in landingconfiguration just before touch down on thecomputer and to compare the results withwind tunnel experiment data. I enjoy workingin my team very much, the relationships thereare quite informal and friendly, which I thinkenhances the learning and workingatmosphere, including the language sphere.
At work, I use every chance to deepen myknowledge and to gain a betterunderstanding of an engineer’s worklife andhow the processes in the aeronauticalindustry work. For example I joined anAerodynamic class after work hours and Ialso decided to obtain a private pilot license,since flying has always fascinated me.
Every day of my program is an enjoyable oneand I want to thank everyone who enabledme to participate in this great program andthis unique and unforgettable life experience.
The only thing which bothers me is that therain period just started and I don’t know howto persuade the weather god to make thiswinter a sunny one.

It has been one and a half month sincePawel and I moved to Renton, now workingfor one of the greatest companies I have everbeen working for. Getting settled within oneweek is kind of an eager yet possibleapproach if one has to face the differences inprocesses and regulations. However finally itturned out to be easier to some degree thanin Germany.
Being assigned to the noise engineeringgroup I currently deal with customer inquiriesfrom all over the world, providing them withnoise contours, economics studies and flightpath analysis. My work requires goodcollaboration with different departments andthe ability to look beyond the scope of work.Of course it took some time to becomeproductive and familiar with the procedures.Thanks to the great support of my team, leadand manager I really feel to constantlybecome a valuable member. Besides gaininghard skills I also will take advantage of thevarious trainings offered by The BoeingCompany after hours focusing onmanagement, economics and teambuildingskills.Becoming a highly skilled pilot meansobtaining an instrument rating necessarily.So I started right away with my instrumentrating lessons. On top of that I starteddiscovering the area mostly by air, enjoyingthe beautiful landscape, the national parksand the skyline of Seattle.

By now I highly appreciate the possibility togain these important and valuableexperiences. Also I would like to stress theoutstanding efforts of the people who madethis time come true to me, namely the RAMFTeam, the BoeingTeam and ReinhardtAbraham, a name I will never forget and apersonality I wish I could have met.

“I could not imagine… ”
I could not imagine how much luckier I couldget when I got accepted to the RASFprogram. When I first heard of the programfrom Bryan Russell, a past RASF scholarfrom my department, I thought that it wouldbe an ideal opportunity for me to expand myacademia research experience and my viewof the world. Secondly, I hoped to turn thisexchange opportunity into a “break” betweenmy undergraduate and graduate while beingproductive and stay meaningful as a scholar.It was very exciting to me, to my family, andto my department when I got accepted to theprogram.As the fourth scholar from the University ofWashington Materials Science andEngineering Department that joined theRASF program, I work in Dr. HelmutSchubert’s group on characterizing theproperties and processing of porous titanium
formed via the protein forming method in theInstitut für Werkstoffwissenschaften und technologien at the Technische Universität inBerlin. Though the research topic wasseemingly distant from any of the materialsthat I have worked with before, I was excitedto venture and work on a completely differentclass of material. Seven weeks into theproject now, I feel that I have not only gainedinvaluable research experience, but also anew perspective on materials.Of course not all the time I spend here inGermany is on doing research (I don’t thinkyou would believe me even if I say soJ). AsI said before, I wanted to turn this exchangeopportunity into a meaningful break. Hencethis is the first time I have visited Europe. Ihave plans to travel around to see as muchof it as possible during my stay. So far I havevisited only cities in Germany, Munich,Heilbronn and Heidelberg. I went to Munichduring the famous Oktoberfest weeks. It wasquite an experience even though I onlyvaguely remember the trip (I blame it on thebeerJ). It is in Munich where I found therichest German culture, beer and food, andarchitectural history that we foreigners knowGermany for – from the beer gartens to thefamous Neuschwanstein Castle. My trip toHeilbronn and Heidleberg was definitely themost memorable. I met up and spent aweekend with a former UW MSE student whois now working for the Audi racing division.We spent a lot of time together talking aboutthe good old days and the uptodate gossipsin the UW MSE department
Time is running out day by day. However Iam still planning on travelling to other cities inGermany and Europe during the remainingtime of my stay. A trip to Hamburg is on myschedule for early December. Additionally, Ihave joined a guided tour to visit central

Europe (France, Italy, Austria, Germany, andthe Netherlands) during the Christmas break.London and Dublin are also on my visitingschedule for January because two of my UWMSE classmates are going to be at thosecities for their exchange programs.Without more to say, I would like to expressmy sincere gratitude to all the people thatmade this chapter of my life possible. October, 3rd is one of the most memorabledays in Germany’s history. After years ofsegregation of the two countries whichinseparably belonged together, the day ofreunification is a good reason for celebrating.The annual celebrations of the GermanConsulate in San Francisco took place at thefamous University of Washington. The mainauditorium at the campus, the Kanes Hall,was packed. The audience listenedenthusiastically to the leadin words of ViceConsul Christoph Tannenberger and histeam who provided a warm welcome and anice atmosphere for their guests. Ron Irving,dean of the department of arts and science,was given the floor. He stressed the existingtight relations among the University ofWashington(UoW) and various universitiesin Germany. Especially the department ofGermanics at the UoW, founded in 1861, stillhas good and highly enriching forms ofcooperation with German universities.Recently the good reputation of UoW and thedepartment of Germanics placed the UoW inthe league of world’s top 20 universities,according to a Chinese studies amongstudents. After the performance of FranzSchubert’s “Forelle” and “Rastlose Liebe”,interpreted by Ute Freund and accompaniedby Sandra Bleiweiss on the piano, RolfSchütte, German Consul, announced one ofthe highlights. He asked the audience forsinging the German and US hymn – one ofthe most emotional moments for allattendees. Thanking the audience for taking
their time to attend this festival, RolfSchütte’s speech emphasized thesignificance of the good relations betweenGermany and the USA. Governor ofWashington State, Christine Gregoire,agreed with her previous speakers that thegood relations led to a close and valuablefriendship. While studying in Germany, shewas able to learn more about the country.According to her experience abroad, theOktoberfest is one of the “craziest festivals”she has ever seen.
