Reading: The moderator-mediator variable distinction insocial psychological research

The purpose of this analysis is to distinguish between the

properties of moderator and mediator variables in such a

way as to clarify the different ways in which conceptual

variables may account for differences in peoples

    behavior.

In general terms, a moderator is a qualitative (e.g. sex,

race, class) or quantitative (e.g. level of reward) variable

that affects the direction and/or strength of the relation

between an independent or predictor variable and a

    dependent or criterion variable.

    Reading: Attitude change

For over 40 years, the central organizing perspective in

this area has been a dual-motive scheme that

    differentiates between informational influence, which

involves accepting information obtained from others as

evidence about reality, and normative influence, which

involves conformity with the positive expectations of

another who could be anotherperson, a group, orones

    self

    14/15

Social influence researchers traditionally assumed that

informational and normative motives are each associated

with unique mechanisms that generate attitude change and

    with unique forms of change.

When participants were motivated to defend their own

position, they selected arguments to read that supported

their view, generated thoughts supportive of their position,

    and indicated relatively polarized attitudes.

Recent empirical findings suggest instead that lack of

continuity between public and private judgements is not

    reliably diagnostic ofrecipients motives
