7 Tips for Creating a Highly Effective LinkedIn Profile

Introduction• If you don’t have a LinkedIn profile– You’re lacking a valuable job search tool– LinkedIn is a way to market yourself to the world
• It doesn't take long to create a great profile – Or, to overhaul your profile
• Prepare to follow the last of the 7 Tips for Creating a Highly Effective LinkedIn Profile
Tip 4: Create a Compelling Summary
• Your summary is among the first sections read• Quickly convey – Your accomplishments – History– Skills
• First or third person is acceptable – Be consistent– First person: more friendly and sincere– Third person: more formal and polished

• The summary is your chance to go beyond bullet points• Don’t hesitate to use all of the space allowed • Do not create a solid block of text – Break info into paragraphs– Group like info under headings
Tip 5: Drop the Buzzwords
• Buzzwords: overused, trendy words• In 2012, LinkedIn reported top summary buzzwords:
1. Creative 2. Organizational 3. Effective 4. Motivated 5. Extensive experience6. Track record 7. Innovative 8. Responsible 9. Analytical 10. Problem solving
Tip 5: Drop the Buzzwords (cont.)
• Cut generic terms that won’t help you stand out– “accomplished” – “detail-oriented” – “results-driven”
• Leave out clichés– “always stepped up to the plate”

Include Keywords• Increase the odds your profile will be discovered– Both within LinkedIn and the Internet as a whole
• Identify the top 5 to 10 most relevant keywords – Describe your work experience – What you offer as a candidate – Work keywords into your profile• Headline• Summary• Elsewhere

• To find relevant keywords– Look at profiles of people with similar roles– Look though industry publications
