7th grade papier mache’
• view samples of final illustrated project description (innovative artist emulations and structures).
• (We will hand in planning sheet and the final illustrated project description will be published electronically.)
• Victor Vasarely J. H. – 7B• Mine is like the other one because it has a light
source and goes from light to dark. And the forms are tilted.
• I chose Jackson Pollock because he paints abstract images. I copied his artwork by just splattering paint on my chair just like he did in the picture above.
Cut front and back
• Use cardboard and appropriate size for your project
• Unfold box at the seam
• Use a cutting board
• Cut in the corner of the cardboard
• You do not have to avoid bends
• After the first one is cut out, trace it and cut out the second
After you cut…
• Throw away any cardboard pieces that don’t look inviting
• Return all good cardboard to the bin
For conventional assembly
• Cut strips that are the same width ( the depth of your letter).
• The length of the strips does not matter
• Assemble to the back letter with masking tape.
• Start assembling the trapped spaces first
• Wait til all the sides are finished before putting on the front of the letter.
Scoring
• Scoring means cutting through the first layer of cardboard, so it is still attached, but now more flexible.
• Score once where you want the strip to turn a corner
• Score many times along curves• Tape the strips to the contour of the letter• Put the front letter on after all the sides are
on.
Creative assembly
• Add shelves, supports, weights, and doors before putting on the front.
• You can also make up your own assembly rules
Put on your first coat
• Protect your table with newspaper before getting the “goop”
• Make the first coating of your project newspaper or plain paper layer
• Use index and middle fingers to “squeegee” off the excess goop
• Lay in a criss-cross pattern over the cardboard joints for strength
• Rub until smooth
• Second coat should be plain white or the final color.
Surface treatment: copy your artist’s style
• Paint on blended colors or patterns
Publish
• Take 3 pictures…– 1 with student artist, – 1 with famous artist– 1 with just your art
• Put your first 2 pictures and an explanation into Powerpoint– Save it to “G” drive, “art” folder, “7 (A or B) Papier Mache”
powerpoint, on the slide number that matches your class number
• Put the 3rd picture on the St. Clement Web page. – Save it to “G” drive, “web design” folder, “art” folder, name the
file with your name.
• View book The Hidden Alphabet
