I have an eclectic mix of topics in this week’s newsletter piece.

We would like to form a ‘Friends of the Environment’ group of parents / guardians / grandparents et.al., who would meet occasionally throughout the year to discuss and contribute to projects around the school and the wider Coffs Harbour community that promote environmental awareness and sustainability.

To that end, we will hold a welcome breakfast in the Primary Performance Space on Friday, 22 March at 8.00am. All those interested are asked to send an RSVP by Wednesday, 20 March to [email protected]

There has been an outbreak of head lice in some parts of the Primary school. Parents and guardians are asked to be vigilant, checking their child/ren’s hair for lice. Children with lice must not be sent to school until their hair has been treated and the infestation eliminated. Your cooperation is essential in this matter.

The area behind the Music block is not a student drop off area. The roadway to the back of the school is clearly marked “No Access, Staff Parking Only”. There is simply not enough room on that roadway or at the back of the school for staff parking, parent parking, and student drop-off. Please, do not drive to the rear of the school. It is a staff only area.

Before 8.00am, children with musical instruments can be dropped at the pedestrian crossing in the bus zone, where they will have direct access down the pathway to the Music building. There is an issue with children who must carry large instruments, so we will discuss options for them with parents.

Please do not use the Disabled Car Park bays as an easy alternative to the ‘Kiss and Ride’ area.

Response to the immunisation program for all of Year 7 and boys in Year 9 has been slow. At the time of writing this, only 73/123 Year 7 consent forms have been returned, and 27/68 forms for boys in Year 9. Monday is the absolute deadline for these consent forms.

Our BDC App has proved popular. So far, nearly 400 downloads to iPhones and Androids have happened. We are having an iPad version built now for release very soon.

Leave: Exemption from School Attendance

Students taking leave for a family event, attendance at a sporting event, exceptional circumstance, etc. must provide a completed Application for Exemption Form (available on College Webpage) to the Principal. On receipt the Principal will issue a Certificate of Exemption which is provided to the parents/caregivers.

Students Leaving the College

Parents/caregivers are reminded that one term’s notice of withdrawal from enrolment must be provided to the Principal. If your child is leaving the College, please confirm this in writing to Lyn Mercer, Registrar at [email protected]

Tim EganAssistant Principal (Head of Secondary)

From The head oF secondaryStudent services for Secondary students will move to the Secondary office as of Tuesday 19 March. The updated absentee policy for Secondary students will be emailed to all families on Monday 18 March. Please ensure that you are familiar with the process to ensure a smooth transition.

Thank you to the students in Years 8 & 10 who completed the healthy lifestyle survey conducted by the Cancer Council. This information is assisting a national research campaign.

Year 12 students will be completing Half Yearly examinations over the next two weeks. Please keep these students in your thoughts and prayers over this time and we hope that they all give their best effort and that the examinations will assist them in the goals they have set for the rest of their Senior year.

It was great to see so many students and parents having positive conversations about schooling at our Parent/Teacher/Student evening on Wednesday. The education of our children is a team effort and we all want the best for them. Year 10 Parent/Teacher/Student evening is on next Thursday 21 March commencing at 4pm. All families would have received log in and booking information in the mail and bookings are open until midnight on Tuesday 19 March.

Congratulations to Serena Brehaut (BDC 2012) who will receive a Southern Cross University (SCU) Rising Star Scholarship to assist in her studies. The ceremony takes place here in Coffs Harbour on Tuesday 19 March.

chaPlain’s chaTIn this time of Lent we are encouraged to reflect upon our lives and be challenged to examine ourselves and make some changes to our lives, whilst experiencing God’s peace throughout our journey. In the Anglican Church liturgy we share God’s peace with one another. The greeting of peace is introduced with these words by the priest “We are the body of Christ” and the people respond with “His Spirit is with us” The priest then continues with “The Peace of the Lord be always with you” and the people respond with “ And also with you”.

What exactly is this exchange of peace? Sharing God’s peace is not just offering a friendly hello to those sitting around you or catching up on news. Sharing God’s peace with one another is a sign of reconciliation. It is an opportunity for God’s people to be reconciled with one another as they offer their gifts to God before they receive the gift of Holy Communion.

Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, as recorded in Matthew’s Gospel, lays a foundation for the practice of sharing God’s peace. “So when you are offering your gift at the altar, if you remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go; first to be reconciled to your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift.” Matthew 5: 23-24

We are reminded of God’s peace with the celebration of Harmony Day on the 21st March. Harmony Day will be celebrated throughout the College and Secondary will celebrate with a Taize service at Assembly. This service will be spoken in numerous diverse languages and led by students and staff from a variety of cultures. The message of Harmony Day is ‘Everyone Belongs’. It is a day to celebrate Australia’s diversity. It is a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home – from the traditional owners of this land - to those who have come from many countries around the world. Harmony Day is managed by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship and coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

Throughout our journey may we grow and reap the good harvest as we too discover Jesus together.

Shalom my friends

Rev Marion TanfieldChaplain

sTudenT environmenT GrouPFollowing on from last week’s successful Clean Up Australia activity, the Student Environment group gave a short presentation at assembly reporting back on their results. We really are truly blessed by the beautiful natural environment in and around our school and the overwhelming majority of our students treat this with care and respect. However, after the clean up, the Student Environment Group would like to remind everyone to always try to dispose of litter in the appropriate manner.

The paper-recycling program administered by the Environment Group students continues to be a success in secondary classrooms. The students are emptying the paper only bins weekly and this is saving a huge amount of recyclable material from going into landfill. In an effort to reduce the total paper usage in the school, the students are currently designing posters to be placed on photocopiers and printers to remind users to print and copy sensibly and only when actually necessary.

careersWe have launched a new school Careers website for everyone in our school community. You can find this site at http://bdccareers.com. The site contains a huge amount of information and will be the first place for students, staff and parents when looking for information on anything job, careers, university and TAFE related (and there is so much more).

All students in Years 10, 11 and 12 are encouraged to visit this site and familiarise themselves with its tools, features and register an account. We look forward to your support with this initiative and do expect that it will improve the effectiveness with how we communicate about careers related matters.

Students in Year 10 will get time in careers lessons to explore the site. Parents and students may wish to get future careers newsletters delivered to their smartphones/ipods by scanning the QR code and installing the App. Push Notification Student Flyer

The new elective Child Studies, which is offered in Year 9, has seen the students experiencing a range of opportunities involving children and babies. Last week, William, who is 6 weeks old, visited our class along with his mum, Jess Meyers, to share her experiences so far. Students gained an insight and were able to ask questions about all things baby. Ms Meulenbroeks also dropped by with daughter Leika who is now five months old.

Students over the course of Term 1 have been immersed in the Infant part of the Primary school. Students are spread across five classes and help students with a range of activities. Not only do the young students enjoy the company but the older students certainly take away some great experiences as well.

The Virtual babies, that they receive next week, will be sure to test the patience and sleep patterns of students. It will mean long nights and a lot of organisation and sacrifice - much to the amusement of their parents.

Year 8 students are learning about the great Australian painter William Dobell. They have gained an appreciation of one of his most controversial portraits, that of Joshua Smith, for the Archibald Prize. Students recreated the portrait using watercolours. I have included a particularly vivid reproduction by Tegan Hannaford. Year 7 students have enjoyed an intensive study of colour theory and how to use and analyse it in artworks. Here are some images of the students at work.

Karin LisleAssistant Principal (Head of Primary)

From The head oF Primary

From The head oF Primary

Thank you to all the parents who are doing the right thing by parking in the allocated spots and dropping their children off safely. I know there are sometimes a raft of complaints but I know that most parents do the right thing all the time and know that your children’s safety is our main concern.

Can I also remind all parents (and this may help any of you that are getting pressure from your children) that even though the Secondary school is allowing students to bring electronic devices to school, this does not apply to Primary students. The Secondary school has spent considerable time preparing for the transition to BYOT but the focus in the Primary this year has been and will continue to be the introduction to the National English curriculum. We provide opportunities for using electronic devices through the provision of school laptops and school iPads at this stage.

Today is National Day against Bullying and Violence and we recognised this day yesterday in assembly by presenting the elephants that Primary students have been creating. Why elephants? Please ask your children to explain, they have been working together in class on anti-bullying projects and producing a lot of understanding along with the elephants.

On Sunday the performance choir will be joining other schools in the Botanical Gardens to celebrate Harmony Day. It would be great to see other students there, it will be a fun day and sharing the diverse cultures in Coffs Harbour helps all our children understand that we are a small part of a bigger world. Next Thursday will be mufti day for Primary students and they will be asked to dress in the national costume or colours of the flag of their particular class nation. Teachers will inform you of any other activities that day.

Student Services In PrimaryAs of next Tuesday there will be a change to Student Services provisions:

If your child is absent from school, could you please either email the child’s teacher or ring Tracee Porter on 66515644 extension • 224 and state the reason for absence (a government requirement). If your child is late to school, they will need to go to the Primary office to sign in and collect a late slip that they need to give to • their class teacher. If you are picking your child up during the day, you will need to go to the Primary office to sign them out, collect the early slip and • deliver this to their teacher before taking your child.

This is designed to streamline our procedures.

Enjoy the weekend, hopefully we will see a little more sunshine.

See www.rotaryyouthexchange9650.com.au under the heading ‘apply now’ before 6 May 2013 for departure January 2014. For more details contact chair Jan Crombie 02 65847882, 041149858

Events:Year 12 students interested in UNE open day trip Friday May 3, please get expression of interest note in to Mrs Crisp by March 20.Year 10, 11 and 12 students interested in doing the Workplace Health and Safety course at the College May 31 $100 please see Mrs Crisp ASAP.

The Information Services Website offers students from Years 7-12 useful planning tools and resources to assist with their studies.

Year 7-10 students will find a calendar of the learning tasks and assessment items set for the term. The calendars contain links to many of the set assignments, so that students can access the actual task details in a convenient way. Within the assignments, links are provided to assistance pages that help students to understand unfamiliar terms and to undertake tasks such as making notes, avoiding plagiarism and writing a bibliography. Links are also provided to the library catalogue and to websites that will be useful when researching information for the assignment.

As well as allowing students to see which books might be useful for assignments, the library catalogue also provides quick links to over 15,000 websites that have been checked by teachers for their suitability to school studies. By using the online assignment sheet and the library catalogue, students can access internet resources quickly and effectively without having to use an internet search engine and possibly consume valuable time while trying to find the appropriate websites.

Year 11 - 12 students will find links to an online version of their assessment handbook and their assessment summary calendar for the year. Study planners, assessment task cover sheets, exam timetables and links to useful sites are also available. Senior students will definitely find the assignment assistance pages useful, especially the links to online information resources such as newspaper and journal databases. The link to ‘Senior information skills’ is also worth investigating, as it provides information about accessing the more academic sources of information that senior students are expected to consult during the course of their research.

Early Tuesday morning this week we sent four football teams to Armidale to play in the NCIS Football Gala at The Armidale School. It is a selection process to choose players for the NCIS teams, who will travel to Sydney in May to play the CIS Championships.

We sent both girls and boys 5/6 Primary teams and girls and boys Open Secondary teams. We arrived to find the Armidale weather cold and wet, but thankfully conditions improved as the day went on. BDC performed exceptionally well again with the Primary boys winning the final and being undefeated on the day, and the girls playing well to finish second, losing a close game in the final. The Secondary girls team also performed well winning the final and being undefeated, and the boys finishing second, losing 1-0 in the final.

The entire Secondary girls team was selected to play at CIS and Je Jacobs, Noah Bedford, Tom Place, Gordon Adams, Jonothan Chan and Jack Malouf were all selected for Secondary. For Primary, the following boys were chosen: Max Jones, Darcy Newell, Charlie Alderman, Rueben Mouton, Zyggy Cobcroft,, Declan Mayben, and Levi Deane.
