the addition of more temporary seating. Nelson has been granted three games for the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup and Saturday’s match was the region’s first chance to prove it deserved to be named as a host venue. But the overwhelming success in the height of the summer holidays has now given Nel-son Cricket more confidence that it will be granted a three year deal with New Zealand Cricket meaning the Black Caps could return before the World Cup. “We’d love to think the Black Caps see this as their home ground and want to develop a winning record here. We did a very quick debrief straight after the game but generally everybody is pretty happy. Hopefully we can have another ODI next year as well as the three Cricket World Cup games so I think next year will be significant.”David says the crowd was well behaved, got

into the game, and there were plenty wearing Tui t-shirts hoping to win $100,000 by catch-ing a six with one hand. He admits the wait for food was excessive and that more toilets will be needed for future fixtures, but it was a learning curve and those problems should not occur again. “There are literally hundreds

of things we’ve learnt; managing the crowd, servicing the crowd, the requirements of New Zealand Cricket, the requirements of media, we’ve learnt mountains.“The wait for food was unacceptable and we do need more portaloos but they’re all things that are manageable and things we can deal with. I’ve watched the replay on TV and the ground looked amazing, the shots of the re-gion were fantastic and I’m sure it was a huge boost for the region.” Following the Black Caps’ record breaking win in Queenstown just days before, cricket fans were hoping for fireworks. While it was a more controlled display with Martin Gup-till top scoring with 81 in New Zealand’s 285 opening innings, everyone got their money’s worth in the final ball with Corey Anderson smashing a six right over the embankment. In reply, West Indies were sitting at just 134/5 when rain stopped play in the 34th over, handing New Zealand the victory.

It was a case of third time lucky for Nelson’s Angela Miller who won the Best Dressed Female in the Matthews Eyewear Eyecare Fashion in the Field at the Nelson Harness Racing Club’s meeting at Richmond Park on Sunday. After finishing second in the popular race-day fashion contest in 2011 and again last year, Angela pulled the right rein in this year’s edition when she decided to wear a home made outfit. She spent hours making the horse-patterned, black and white dress and matching black and white hat and all her hard work paid off with the judges agreeing that Angela looked “amazing”.“I decided I needed to up the ante this year after finishing second twice,” Angela says. “Last year I wore a dress I bought but this year I thought I’d make my own so I could wear something that was one-off.”However, Angela was almost a late scratching from the contest only lining up in the top class field after she got some encouragement from her friends. “I was in a real flap this morning and wasn’t going

to enter but my girl friends persuaded me to do it. I’m pleased they did it.”Angela took “a couple of weeks working off and on” to make the dress and hat which one of the judges Leonie Trathen says was “fantastic”.“She looked immaculate,” says Leonie. “She obviously put a lot of time and effort into her outfit and make-up and we loved the horse pattern on the dress.”Angela won prizes worth over $1000 from Matthews Eyewear Eyecare, Morrison Square and

Oxygen Skincare. Best Dressed Male winner Jarrod Illingworth also needed some gentle persuasion to enter the contest.“My partner [Shelley Habib] made me do it,” Jarrod said.”Jarrod was wearing a suit he purchased in Thailand and a pink shirt from Barker’s.Although Jarrod was pleased he impressed the judges he was even happier he received top marks from Shelley who gave him a congratulatory kiss and told him he “looked wonderful”.

Bob Ching used the metaphor of a cowboy telling his horse “get me out of here and I’ll look after you for the rest of your life” when chased by Indians. Apparently the same applies to his 1951 Triumph Thunderbird – a motorcycle he’s owned for 50 years. The Stoke man was pointed out by Nelson Classic Motorcycle Club president Peter Wood at the club’s annual show at the Stoke Memorial Hall. Peter says it’s rare to see anyone hold onto a motorcycle for 30 years let alone 50.Bob, who speaks through his long whiskers which he clearly didn’t have when he first bought the bike as a 17 year old engineering apprentice, says this September will be 50 years to the date he obtained it. Still holding on to the original ownership papers, which are actually dated December 1954 because the previous owner took a few months to find them again, Bob recalls the moment he and the Thunderbird met. “It was in pieces when I bought it. It was abandoned in a workshop so I bought it off the guys there. I was doing an apprenticeship at the time and it cost me 25 pounds,” he says.Bob has lots of memories on the bike, including tours and “picking up girls”, and says he will never part with it. “I lived on a farm and having a motorbike got me out of having to do farm work. It got me out

of there,” he says, recalling his cowboy and Indians metaphor. He has stayed true to his word of looking after it and hopes to pass it down to his grandchildren one day. Most of the Thunderbird is original, the biggest addition being a new front wheel. However, it was taken off a classic Triumph too, so it’s close enough, Bob believes. “I don’t paint it because that’s how it looks. Mechanically it goes really well. I’ve put new style things that have made it perform better like the original brakes were pathetic. Most of it is still the original, it’s got the original engine.”Bob, who just retired as a chief engineer

on a ship, gives the Thunderbird plenty of use, even in the winter. He plans to ride to Bluff in September to celebrate the 50 years. Each club member has their own story, and Peter says the reason for the show is to get all of the 200 members together for a weekend so they can catch up over their biggest passion. Generally members go on rides every fortnight but that might only include 12 to 30 riders. He says the first day was “steady” while Sunday had plenty of people through the doors. If you have a motorcycle that is over 25 years old and are interested in joining the club, contact Peter on 540 2832.

Jazz festival finale wows crowdNelson’s iconic jazz festival had the perfect send off on Sunday, as hundreds of people packed out Washbourn gardens to take in the finale event of the Woollaston Jazz & Blues Festival.Festival director Liam Ryan

says the event, now in its 23rd year, was a huge success this summer with the programme drawing in well over 20,000 people across various venues around the region.“It really feels as though it is building momentum every

year. It’s attracting a lot of interest and feels sustainable.” He says the finale event, with its “leafy trees, blue sky, picnics and family atmosphere” suited the tone of the festival as a whole which was all about community.

Ever wondered what Granny’s old clock might be worth? Or perhaps that vase you found at a garage sale? Bring it along to the Nelson Antique and Collectibles Show this weekend and find out – you could be in for a surprise.Antique dealers and collectors from all over the country will descend on the city this Saturday for the event which is being held by the Nelson Antique Bottle and Collectibles Club. It’s not the first time such an event has been held, but club member Judy Pittman says every few years the group holds an event to show the vast range of items they collect. “It’s definitely not just bottles. It’s anything and everything.” A huge range of goods will be exhibited and sold from postcards to pottery, paintings to paperweights but the event will also include items that are a little more out of the ordinary. Some were once commonplace but are now rare, such as household items like egg whisks, tin openers, local memorabilia and Kirkpatrick’s jam jars. “Past shows have done very well. Because everyone collects

something, there will be something there to interest everyone.” It’s not just antiques either, with a huge variety of retro and vintage items on display and up for grabs because “retro is the new antique.”Geoff Scott of Stoke is one local who will be exhibiting something a bit unique; he is gearing up to display a small sample of his collection of British police helmets. With over 70 helmets to his name, it is one of the largest in the country. “I started collecting them in 1992. I’ve always been interested in enforcement memorabilia. When I realised just how many different styles there were I just kept collecting. It’s not your usual run of the mill collection.” Geoff ’s favourite helmet is one of the rarest and comes from the City of London Police – a force that covers only the financial district, also known as “The Square Mile”. The public are welcome to bring along antiques to find out what they might be worth, with members of the club offering a free valuation service at the show. The show will be held at the Nelson Suburban club from 9am. Entry $5.

At 72 years old most ladies are taking it easy, making cakes and loving grand-children. Joan Wills does all this – and very well from all indications – but she has a pas-sion away from all that. She loves tat-toos, or “inking” as it is now known. And at 72 she’s still not finished. So what makes a seemingly average lady step out like this? Born in Richmond and raised on the Papps family tobacco farm in Wakefield, Joan has all the nor-mal family connections. One brother and sisters and quite a relaxed husband called Cecil, aged 81. They married in 1960 and Joan and Cecil set about do-ing all the things we all do. They raised a family and worked on their careers. Cecil being the Rabbit Island caretaker for many years, Joan looking after the kids, two girls two boys. When the kids were old enough Joan went on to work successfully for IHC for a 21 year stint. Then at 47 years old she decided to do something bold. It was 1988 and even then tattoos were definitely a man’s do-main, as well as for criminals and the odd seaman. Joan popped into the local Nelson tattooist Trevor Marshall and got her first tattoo. “I wanted something that was really only for me,” she says. So Trevor advised two things; a nice fleshy part and a place that it could be hidden if at a later date she grew to dis-like it. She chose the upper leg and her love affair with inking started. Over the next 25 years Joan added to her collection. Even when she went overseas she would pop into a local tat-too shop and browse. “I was in Brisbane one day shopping and went to go on a river cruise but I eventually ended up with another tattoo,” she says. And so what do her family think of it?

“Actually it’s a really positive response. My grandkids really like it as it makes their Granny quite different, my kids are very supportive and my brother and sis-ters are all behind me as well. Although they were, because of the generation, a little unsure at the start,” she smiles. Two of their children have tattoos and two don’t. Her husband Cecil has no inking whatsoever and calls himself an “introvert” but he lights up when you start talking about Joan and her artwork. He quickly rushes to the din-ing cabinet and proudly shows a trophy Joan won in 1998 for her tattoos. He also keeps a little book with all the costs, what tattoos were done by who and when. Over the years Joan continued adding and using the tattoo greats like Will and Jackie Morrow who now run the In-

angahua tearooms. Joan and Cecil reck-on costs are around $5000-$7000 for the inking and Joan says she still hasn’t finished. “I am running out of room but I won’t do neck or face and that means I can be in charge of when the tattoos can be seen. I still am mindful of how I dress for particular events and as I am getting older my skin’s getting thinner so I take my time.” And as for the most common question “does it hurt?” Joan replies with a smile “not to me it didn’t”. She also says it’s a great conversation starter with more and more people get-ting inking. She says often people will stop her in the street for a chat and Joan’s always happy to do that. “I think Cecil and I have really great person-alities and that’s helped us pull off this whole tattoo thing.”

Beach concert for teensTahunanui beach will not only be the place to be for its sand and surf this Friday, the Summer Beach Festival will see bands take to the stage in front of hundreds of teenagers. The festival will be held from 4 to 10pm and not only provides entertainment for local and visiting teens but also a chance for up and coming bands to show off their skills in front of a large crowd. The free concert is being hosted by The Truck, the Nelson City Council-funded off shoot of the New Hub after the youth centre closed last year due to earthquake risk. The Truck travels around Nelson providing rec-reation at a wide variety of venues for youth aged 11-18. It partners with the council to provide eight youth events each year. “We provide things for teenagers to go and do, especially in the evenings. So we got a whole lot of bands together and thought we’d put on a great day at the beach with some fun stuff,” says Youth and Community Trust manager Steve Wilson. There will also be a barbeque and sports equip-ment to make full use of the beach facilities, says Steve, with some activities on the beach and oth-ers on the Tahunanui Reserve. The acts performing include Livvy and Anna, Chase Tangohau Music and Little Oceans.Steve says although there will be plenty of out-of-town teens who are welcome to attend, the event is aimed at giving locals something to do in the middle of summer.

Summer art exhibition backNelson's summer art exhibi-tion is back and due to popu-lar demand will have extended hours.Members of Art Group Nelson will be gathering once again at Queens Gardens this Saturday for their annual summer event and club member Jean Jackson says that this year, they've taken on board feedback and will be catering to the crowd. "After art buyers at previous shows ex-pressed their disappointment

at the 4pm closing, a decision has been made to hold the ex-hibition for one day only but to continue into the evening." She says there will be the usu-al display of artwork ranging from oil, watercolours, mixed media and acrylics, and pieces will range from paintings to woodcarving, glasswork, and garden art. Jean says that due to the grow-ing numbers of the club, the exhibition will have something

for everyone. "Once again, membership has grown, bringing in new varie-ties for all art collectors to en-joy in their homes long after the exhibition is over. Members look forward to seeing familiar faces from previous years and also meeting new art lovers."The exhibition will open at 10.30am and will close at 7pm. Rain day is Sunday January 12. TUESDAY 7 January 2014NelsonYour Community Newspaper Weekly This Week 9

Watch out for over a hundred men and women, wearing bells, ribbons and very large smiles, dancing about in Nelson this week. They’re Morris Dancers, in Nelson for the an-nual National Morris Tour of New Zealand in January 2014. Dancers from New Zealand and England, US and Australia will “dance out” at various loca-tions including the Queens Gardens and the Mapua Boardwalk, Richmond’s Sundial Square and Founders Park, from January 7 to 12.Steve Rule is the “squire” or leader of the hosts, Nelson Morris Dancers and says the tour pro-vides opportunities for teams to ‘do a bit of showing off ’, learn some new dances or tradi-tions and generally have a good time.“Morris Dancing is an old English ritual dance that can be traced back to the 1500s but there’s no evidence of where it comes from,” he says. “It’s magical and mystical, you don’t need a part-ner… and I just love it.”Steve has been Morris Dancing all his life and says it’s a way of being connected to the past but in a modern innovative way.“It’s been developing over the past five hundred years and in England now it’s protected by Eng-lish Heritage, an organisation that ensures the past is kept to enrich the future.”Steve and his wife Jan King both Morris Danced in the UK prior to immigrating to New Zealand. They formed Nelson Morris in August 2009 and now the club has around 23 dancers and musi-cians. “People take the mickey out of Morris Dancing because it’s quirky - men and women pranc-ing around with bells and ribbons - but people should come along to a performance see what cool dances we do,” Steve says.Morris Dancing was dying out in the 1970s, but there’s been a revival since and Steve says there are around ten groups in New Zealand now.“All you need is a reasonable level of fitness, a good rhythm, a sense of humour and a mini-mum of six dancers and a musician.”The National Morris Tour is an annual event, held at various locations around New Zealand. It will be held in Nelson from Tuesday until Saturday, January 11. For more information go to Nelson Morris Dancers on Facebook or ww-wnelsonmorris.org.nz or www.nzmorrisontour-wordpress.com

School wins enviro award:Fantastic Tahunanui School winning the enviro schools award.

Well done to the boys and girls as well as the helpers that encouraged their participation and shared their journey with them. Sue Wilson.

Did you go to the Black Caps and what did you think of it?

Sure did! Great atmosphere, ready for the next one! Martine Kessler.

Great day, crap beer, and poor effort by the coffee stand that ran

out of coffee, milk and green tea! Duh!!!! Ali Booker.

Enjoyed the day, however shame that they ran out of coffee, tea etc.

Andrea Campbell.

Awesome day but I think the entry rules shouldn’t be so strict and the

food and beer outlets need to learn and be a bit better prepared. Stephen Simmons.

Brilliant day, well done Nelson cricket!! No complaints at all.

Ben Douglas.

Well organised, efficient entry and exit policies. I can see why the

rules for limited deck chairs and small chilly bins, made for an enjoyable amount

of space. Good entertainment, could have had a little more sun but well done Nelson cricket, superb effort from everyone concerned. Danielle Barnett Hampson.

Well done Ed Shuttleworth and Nelson Cricket. Glen Baumfield.

It was a great day and my son got to do the coin toss, so extra special

day for us. Tina Duncan.

Awesome day, well organised, looking forward to the World Cup!

Understood the no big chilly bins but no deck chairs was ridiculous especially when people were allowed to bring in huge bean bags which take up far more room. Del Jenkins.

Was great day my 8 year old and I had a blast. Atmosphere was

amazing as was the game, it was just sad rain didn’t hold off but we waited it out in the rain to get some great autographs. He got his big cricket bat signed by Ryder, Taylor, McCullum and McMillan. He even got some of the West Indies signitures and got Corey Anderson to sign the little bat. Worth the wait, one very happy boy with some bats to put on his wall. Tia Andrews.

Great day. Wouldn’t whinge too much about the coffee van, they

were run off their feet. They will get it right

next time, trial and error etc. Scott Ford.

Attended! Awesome! Jess Brown.

Brilliant day. Wicked atmosphere, bring on the next one.

Andrea Taylor.

Was a great day. Clinton Harvey.

Our whole family went...it was awesome. The kids

loved it. Ruth Rodley.

As a driver of a maxi taxi I think NCT did well to get

everyone to and from the event and hopefully out of the rain quickly..good on you Nelson for not taking the risk of drinking and driving. Hope you had a great day! I’m sure the vendors did their best as we did. Di Gingell.

Customer service could be better:

Customer service for a lot of hospitality and retail

outlets in Nelson needs to improve dramatically! Locals and tourists deserve a good experience when dining, shopping and supporting

local businesses. It seems that every year we are let down by inexperienced, under trained staff that couldn’t care less about the wellbeing of their customers. I feel for the owners of these small businesses as giving a honest review on Trip Advisor is too easy. Many places to choose from for a coffee so make it properly and smile. It’s not that hard. Having just got back into the sport a year ago, Simon Richardson thought a tennis ball machine would be the per-fect tool to help him improve. But when he realized how much one of those costs he took the novel route of building one out of a supermarket trolley. “It can cost $3000 so as a winter project I just thought ‘why not make one?’”The Tasman Tennis Club member, who is a mechanic by trade, hopes to be wheeling his supermarket trolley out onto the court in the coming months, but is still putting some of the final touches on it. “It was a real buzz when I fired the first ball,” he says. “I just hope it’s reliable enough that we can use it as a club machine so the juniors can practise with it. There’s not many practice part-ners that are prepared to hit 300 balls to you time after time.”Before building it, Simon says he did plenty of research on the internet. “On YouTube it’s not uncommon to see a homemade tennis ball machine or a baseball launcher. There were a couple of sites so I looked at those but I came up with my own design.”The motor is imported from the United States while the rest of the parts had been sourced locally, including the trol-ley which was dumped at his work one evening. Simon says the initial plan

was to use a washing machine but re-alized the ball baskets used by the ten-nis coaches kind of resembled a trolley. “Where I work every night there is a supermarket trolley dumped outside so I acquired one from there. It was really whatever I could find. But it’s ideal for a ball hopper. What I’d really like to work on is having some arms at the front to go around and collect the balls too.”It is powered by a car battery and can fire tennis balls at over 150 km/h or at the same serving speed as a professional

player. “It’s actually a lot faster than oth-er machines on the market but in saying that the motor is pretty hungry. When it’s fully programmable I will be able to programme certain shots into it. Real-istically I could simulate a whole game between Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.”And while the cost was one of the main barriers in buying a brand new tennis ball machine, Simon quietly admits he has spent more than he hoped already. “I reckon I’ve probably spent $500.”

rUgbY SEvEnS: The Turf Hotel Tasman 7s squad for the Bayleys National Champi-onship in Rotorua this weekend has been named. James Lash will captain the side which features just two Tasman Makos. Speedster Mitchell Scott will give the team an injection of x-factor while Waimea's Kaide Whiting was also a member of the ITM Cup Championship winning squad. Nelson College’s Te Puoho Stevens has been named in the 11 man team with other ex-citing prospects Latham Jones, David Havili and Ryan Setephano also included.

SpEEDwAY: The success Nelson drivers had at their home track last year could not be repeated at the New Zealand Superstock Championship at Meeanee Speedway in Napier over the weekend. Shane Penn of Palmerston North has reclaimed 1NZ with no Nelson drivers finishing inside the top three. Shane Harwood was the top driver from the Top of the South finishing fifth equal on 59 points, while Blair Cunningham was Nelson’s next best in 18th place, well out of title contention. Dale McKenzie and Thomas Stanaway made the most of home track advantage last year claiming 2NZ and 3NZ respectively. However, their impressive performances could not be matched in 2014 with Dale and Thomas, along with Nick Fowler and former 1NZ Dale Ewers unable to make it out of the heats.

Golden Bay's Jack Bauer celebrates his Stage 5 win on the Hill St Circuit during the recent Tour de Vineyard cycle race. The win couldn’t push the Golden Bay Olympian that much higher up the overall points tally, however, finishing seventh place. The tour was won by Rotorua’s Ryan Wills who had an overall time of 10 hours 38 minutes and 37 seconds. He was followed in by Daniel Barry and Robin Reid. Reta Trotman of Otago took out the women’s section in a time of 10 hours 52 minutes and 13 seconds after five stages while Warrick Spence of the Tasman Wheelers took out the Masters race in 9 hours 55 minutes 39 seconds. If the Nelson Marlborough Falcons hope to reach the ASB Youth League finals in their second season they will need to cre-ate more chances, so it’s no surprise coach Davor Tavich has used his second over-age spot on a striker.Ryan “Skippy” Stewart is likely to see the second most game time as an over-age player behind captain Coey Turipa, and the Suburbs marksman will link up with Omar Guardiola to form a lethal strike

partnership that will be integral to the Falcons’ playoff aspirations. The New Zealand King Salmon Nelson Marlborough Falcons open the 2014 ASB Youth League with an away trip to Dunedin against Southern United this Sun-day, a team that finished second in the competition last year.Davor has picked a younger squad for the upcoming campaign but says it is no less talented. The focus will be on creating more chanc-

es and he’s confident he has the squad to go all the way. “We have a lot of players born in 1998 and one born in 1999 but we’re really excited about these young players showing their stuff at a national level,” he says. “They’re quality players and de-serve to be in the squad.”Davor says while former New Zealand Under-20 goal keeper Coey Turipa, who was recently

named Mainland Premier League Keeper

of the Year, will be a “massive part of the team”, it’s the Falcons’ forward line that has him excited. “Omar will be key for us and Skippy is gonna be a big factor in the way we play. We need to improve in our attack-ing part of the game and Skippy is a skilful, fast player and he will bring a new dimen-sion to the way we play.”The Falcons will face newcomers Heart-land Wairarapa in Blenheim in the second round of the season before returning to Nelson on January 26 to play Team Wel-lington in round three.

Coey Turipa will captain the Falcons.

The Nelson Harness Racing Club dodged two bullets fired by the weather gods before enjoying a successful summer meeting that featured eight wins including a spectacular cups double by Canterbury driver John Dunn.Club president John McKenzie was all smiles at the completion of the second day's racing at Richmond Park on Sunday but admits they were fortunate that the rain cleared before the start of racing on Friday and Sunday. "We were lucky although once it started raining so early I thought we had a pretty good show of it clearing in time," John says. "We were also lucky to get really good support from the holiday makers and peo-ple in Nelson. There was some great racing and the betting was up on both days so the club had a good meeting." A crowd of over 3000 attended the second day on Sunday after

2300 attended the first day on Friday. The highlight of the meeting was undoubtedly John Dunn posting eight wins, three on Friday and five on Sunday in-cluding a Nelson cups dou-ble on Donegal's Guest. John and Donegal's Guest, which is trained by John's father Robert, emphatically won the Golden Edge Nelson Cup Prelude on Friday and the Nelson Pine Industries Nelson Cup on Sun-day. Donegal's Guest is owned by Terry McDonald, who also owns thee-time New Zealand Cup winner Terror To Love, and Eric Griffin.John had earlier won Sunday's Jennex Signs Mobile pace on The Pacman, the Route 6 Au-tomotive /New Gate Company

Mobile Pace on Lumous and Christian Cullen Mares Mobile Pace on Lauramegan before ending the meeting winning his fifth race of the day on Cracka-heiny in the Hunterbond/Kis Solutions Mobile Pace."It's only the second time I've driven five winners in a day. The other time was last month in Auckland so things are going pretty good at the moment," John says.Nelson horses missed out on a win during the two days of rac-ing with Richmond trainer Ian Thomas producing the best re-sult on Sunday when his son Ja-son drove Taittinger Rose into third in the Jennex Signs Mo-bile Pace. Brian Hill's Sunch-ita ran on well for fifth for his daughter Kristie in the Nelson Building Society Handicap Trot after breaking at the start while Murray Pash's Tough Enough was fourth in the Mac's Mobile Pace.

OUTBOARD MOTORS

On behalf of the DBFC I would like to welcome all the fishing holiday makers to Nelson. You are fortunate enough to have arrived when the fishing is nearing its best. The Top of the South is blessed with a multi-tude of fishing grounds and are just waiting for you to make the most of them. The long range weather looks extremely inviting but as always check the marine forecast before heading out.As always at this time of the year the boat ramps, beaches and water ways are always extremely busy. Take care to find out the lay of the land from the locals as their local knowledge and advice will help en-hance your day out. Make sure you are aware of local fish limits and sizes for specific areas, as they will differ from your own location. If fishing in the Marlborough Sounds for blue cod please make yourselves familiar with the strict laws regard-ing the taking of these fish. The laws will be heavily enforced by MAF over the holiday period.Tasman Bay has been producing some excellent snapper and they are being taken out in the deeper water straight out from Nelson. Head out into the middle of the bay in at least 15-17 metres of water, burley and stray line rigs with fresh baits, pillies or squid. The other al-ternatives are to fish in close to Rab-bit Island or the Boulder Bank with flasher rigs to target the smaller snapper. Please also note that from approximately the end of the Glen, including Cable Bay to Pepin Is-land is a marine reserve and a no fishing zone. Past here is Delaware Bay which has been fishing well for snapper and gurnard. Kahawai are about in prolific numbers this sea-son and can be caught absolutely anywhere in the Top of the South. The Boulder Bank is due to go off anytime with good numbers of kingfish. So if you ever wanted to

land one of these awesome fish, now is the time to do it. You need to use Rapala X-Rap 30 lures, these are a diving lure. As for rod and reel you want something that can han-dle a good fight, a jigging rod, puka rod or any other rod that has at least 20kg line will do and a reel that can handle a bit of torture in the drag department. These fish don’t fight as hard as the ones in deeper wa-ter but all the same will take you to the cleaners if you don’t take it easy. Troll about 6-7 knots, stay between 7-12 metres. Early morning when the sun first hits the water is a good time to do it or late in the evening. Another option is the spat mussel farms off Motueka or Mapua where the king’s are usually getting caught on stickbaits, poppers and jigs. French Pass is still very slow with all the fish up around Nelson at the moment. Not much to report on D’urville Island and Stephens Pas-sage apart from good sized coutta to be taken, help yourselves to them, they are in good numbers and easy to hook up. The inner sounds are finally starting to get some fish in there but has been very slow and now all the holiday makers are there you will be best to fish later at night or early in the morning until everyone goes back home. If you happen to be over in the Abel Tasman try fishing on the reefs around Adele Island or Bark Bay. Make sure you know where the ma-rine reserve is in the park. It starts from Bark Bay and goes right up to the head of Awaroa. From there up to Separation Point you will be able to target snapper, terakhi, blue cod and kahawai. Golden Bay has been fishing very well and the mussel rafts seem to be the flavour of the month to target them.On that note the DBFC wishes eve-ryone a very Happy New Year. May the fishing gods smile upon you and keep a good solid bend in your rod.
