Indian Startup Men
INTRODUCTION
• From past few years Indian startup ecosystem has really taken off & some entrepreneurs have made a great impact
• Prediction is that from 3,100 startups in 2014 a projection of more than 11,500 by 2020
• Startup industry is certainly not a passing trend
• In such competitive industry there are some men who are leaving their strong impact
• They are not only growing with an extraordinary speed but are also setting a high benchmark for other entrepreneurs
RAHUL YADAV: HOUSING .COM• Everyone has heard about him as he bags the
prize for being most talked & controversial face of Indian startup scene
• Things didn't go well for him when he spent a large amount of money on marketing & made foul remarks about some officials at Housing
• But the news that he getting kicked out of his own venture made him popular
• His work at housing led him to Forbes India list of 30 under 30 young entrepreneurs
• He is an IIT-Bomaby dropout & he started his venture in 2012 with his 11 college mates
• Rahul’s real estate classified portal did really well, It went on to raise $100 million in funding
SACHIN AND BINNY BANSAL: FLIPKART• Bansal brothers are 2 most important personnel in
the Indian E-commerce industry
• Both completed their studies together at OP Jindal Modern School, Hisar & then went to IIT-Delhi to study Computer Science & Engineering
• Sachin worked at Techspan meanwhile Binny was working with Sarnoff Corporation
• Both of them worked for Amazon before starting Flipkart
• Initially Flipkart too started as a bookstore, later they added more products & categories
• Bansal brothers in September 2015 were ranked 86th on the Forbes India list with a net worth of $1.3 billion
DEEPINDER GOYAL: ZOMATO• He certainly knows how to stay in limelight be it:
• Taking a stand against HSBC,
• Slashing a large chunk of his employee force or
• Writing open letters to his staff
• When Mr. Goyal was at Bain & Co. along with his co-worker Pankaj Chaddah he decided to scan restaurant menus & upload them on an intranet website wholly for Bain employees
• The website FoodieBay went public in 2008 & in no time expanded to other cities, but only in 2010 it came to be known as Zomato
• Founders quit their jobs to devote their entire time to Zomato after their venture started gaining popularity
• Today Zomato is available in 23 countries & it has acquired a number of companies like Urbanspoon & Lunchtime
KAVIN BHARTI MITTAL: HIKE• Son of business tycoon Bharti Mittal,
Kavin is founder & CEO of messaging application Hike
• He studied Electronics & Electrical Engineering at University of York & then went to Imperial College London to study further
• In 2012, Hike Messenger was started & in few months rasied $7 million from Bharti SoftBank
• Hike is available on iOS, Android, Windows Phone, BlackBerry & Symbian operating systems
• Hike Messenger competes with apps likes WhatsApp, WeChat and Viber
KUNAL BAHL AND ROHIT BANSAL: SNAPDEAL• Both the founders were students of Delhi
Public School
• After completing school Rohit went to IIT-Delhi while kunal went to University of Pennsylvania
• After that Kunal went to Wharton School & Kellogg School of Management, after that he joined Microsoft
• Before they started Snapdeal in 2010, duo started various other businesses too, but nothing worked out as Snapdeal did
• Today everyone is familiar with it & it is one of the largest online market places in India
• They have made quite a few acquisitions including Exclusively.in & Freecharge
VIJAY SHEKHAR SHARMA: PAYTM• Vijay finished his education from Delhi College of
Engineering, gettting an engineering degree was difficult for him as he couldn’t speak English
• But that did not stop him from creating the website indiasite.net in 1997, which after two years was sold for $1 million
• He started One97 communications which also happens to be Paytm’s parent comoany in 2005
• Vijay started Paytm an online recharge, bill payment & e-commerce website in 2010
• Recently they added bus tickets & movie tickets booking to its services
• He also took a stand in December 2015 against Facebook's Free Basics saying that it was against net neutrality
BHAVISH AGGARWAL: OLA• Aggarwal received his Computer Science
& Engineering degree from IIT-Bombay & joined Microsoft Research after that
• He was with Microsoft for two years & he quit his job in 2010
• Aggarwal teamed up with Ankit Bhati & started his own venture Ola Cabs
• Ola Cabs went way head & it became India’s answer to Uber
• Ola is valued at $5 billion as of September 2015
• Company has also made a few acquisitions like TaxiforSure & Geotagg
