Editorial

This month’s news is really about the Calendar.

The quality of the photographs and the beautiful presentation make it more than just a wall-

hanging for next year.

The Calendar Committee have excelled themselves in bringing yet another calendar to

fruition and we must not underestimate the time

and effort shown.

If it is possible to say then now comes the hard part for which everybody signed up, We, and I

really mean all of us, do need to push this year’s

major fund raiser as we all promised a short while ago. Sorry to sound a bit pushy but it does need a

great effort for all of us.

In addition, we will need another huge effort to

emulate this year’s sports achievements which have been rounded off with a resounding victory

in the Three Club Bowls Competition.

That’s a clean sweep of the Rotary Competitions for our Club.

So, look to it everyone, the year has yet to begin.

29 Aug Bruce Cameron - Job Talk, "All Gas but no Gaiters! -

reflections of a retired Bishop"

Fiona Robertson, who is Head of Culture

& Public Service Reform, Perth & Kinross

Council, visited us to talk about Perth’s recent bid to become UK City of Culture

2021 and the tremendous work she and her team put in on our behalf.

Despite the fact that Perth was not selected to appear on the short list many parts of

the city’s application are sure to bring benefits to the area in the future.

Fiona began her career as a curator at the

Tate before leading museum/arts services

and cultural regeneration projects in Cumbria, London and South-East England.

With family roots in Perth, she joined the Scottish Government in 2003 working on

policy areas including culture, tackling

poverty, transport and housing.

In 2012 she joined Perth and Kinross Council where her responsibilities cover

culture, sport and community services. She is currently leading the cultural

transformation programme for P&K

including the development of the City Hall, Perth Theatre and Perth Museum and Art

Gallery.

A postgraduate in modern Scottish

literature, she is Vice Chair of the National Library of Scotland and a Fellow of the

Royal Society of Arts.

bishop, Bruce Cameron, gave his “Job

talk”.

Bruce spoke initially about his early life

as a member of the Episcopal Church, including some very interesting

anecdotes concerning singing for pocket

money!

Following a change of shirt, which he performed to the tune of The Stripper

sung by his audience, he told us more

of the way the Episcopal Church is set up and stressed what a very democratic

organisation it is compared to the way some others are run.

The evening was an ideal opportunity to

invite guests and partners to the meeting and we look forward to another such occasion in the near future.

Representatives of the two other Perth Rotary Clubs joined us in order to meet our

new Governor who was accompanied by.

Elgin, an accountant and was the Finance Director of Johnstons of Elgin.

He titled his talk "Making a Difference"

during which he was both encouraging and inspiring.

He had good news to report concerning the fight against polio. Rotary

Foundation, working in conjunction with

the Bill and Melinda Gates’ Trust, has achieved what many saw as an

impossible dream: to free the world from the devastating effects of polio. Just six

polio virus cases have been reported this

year, the lowest number in history. He said “This is a legacy to the world of

which Rotary, and Rotarians everywhere, can be justifiably proud.

President of Perth St John's, President Colin Moreland of Perth Kinnoull and

Governor Graeme Archibald.

Graeme added “This is not the only stage

on which Rotarians have been active: the contribution to local communities should

be fully recognized. As an example, in the floods which had such an impact in

the past year, Rotarians gave an estimated 12,000 hours of help and

support of various kinds. This is a

contribution which is in danger of being overlooked: the organization and support

given to each and every project in terms of members’ efforts often significantly

outweighs the financial outcome. But it

represents people uniting in action to support worthwhile causes in their own

area, and more widely.”

speaker on behalf of the Club.

Rotary Calendar Photo Competition

Congratulations to Yvonne Deed on two

excellent photos (including the front cover) and to Charlotte Clint for her third winning of the

Young Photographer of the Year Trophy.

Yvonne (left) received a £100 voucher for the

"Best Photo" award plus a £50 prize voucher for her picture of Loch Tay which was chosen for

the front cover of the 2018 calendar. The photograph of the leather worker, which is this

month's picture in the present calendar, was taken by Yvonne and was also judged to be the

"best photo" last year.

Charlotte Clint won the prize for Best Junior

entrant and was awarded the Young Photographer of the Year Trophy for the third

year running

Kinnoull Hill Barbecue

Chefs Steve Norris and Bob Thomson, ably assisted by

Bruce Cameron, provided an excellent feast at the barbecue.

Around 22 diners and 2 dogs were catered for in a very relaxed setting and enjoyed fine weather and good

fellowship.

Many thanks to Iain Brown for organising the event and to Eddie and Lorna at the Royal George Hotel for the meringues. (Photos by Brian Johnston).

We Won The Bowling Too!!!

The three Perth Rotary Clubs took part in the Annual Bowling Competition at the West End Bowling Club. As

usual the Perth Club organised the event which was friendly, enjoyable and very well run.

Two teams of four from each club competed in the event. Our teams were: Team A - Bob Reid, Iain Brown,

Steve Blackett and Brian Johnston. Team B - Willie Monks, Colin Moreland, Bob Riddell and Frank Sloan. Team A won one match and drew one; Team B won both their matches, resulting in a win for the Perth Kinnoull Club

Willie (Sports Boss) Monks was rather pleased when the result was announced. And so he should be - his teams have won everything in recent months!
