One key server management tool is 1the Integrated Lights Out Manager, known as ILOM. Another tool,
made available during the booting of the server’s operating system, is 2the American Megatrend Inc’s
BIOS, known as AMIBIOS. 3The Intelligent Platform Management Interface or IPMI is also available and
can be accessed through the IPMItool user interface software.

The M2 servers will ship with Integrated Lights Out Manager version 3.0.9 while the X2270, X4170, X4270 and X4275 servers can upgrade their current ILOM version 2 to version 3. Its main functions are still
1server configuration and administration but it has more diagnostic capabilities for the users as well as
the service personnel. 3The role privileges have finer definitions to better distinguish what roles are
needed to execute specific commands or actions. 4A service mode, with a more secure password, can be
accessed by service personnel to perform more intense troubleshooting. 5Note, for more information on
ILOM 3.0 refer to this link and the ILOM 3.0 Interactive Tasks course.6

The M2 servers will ship with BIOS from American Megatrends Incorporated 1and will use new version
formats that reflect the product platform, generation or a major release, the official release that is a sequential number and the internal build number. As of the release of this presentation the BIOS version that will ship with the M2 servers has not been determined, so to display the BIOS version navigate to its main Setup screen. As with ILOM,
2its functions are still mainly server configuration and administration with a key function
3of
running the Power On System Tests, referred to as POST, then performing an operating system boot if POST passes. 4Integrated within the service processor hardware is IPMI. This server
5will ship with IPMI version 2 which
performs 6the hardware status collection and reports on hardware events through its IPMI system event
logs and system indicators. 7IPMI also performs control functions through IPMItool software commands
and system buttons it interprets.

Access to the serial port requires a CAT5 cable and a possible 1connector converter to match the
connector type of the terminal monitoring device you are going to use or 2a terminal server can also be
used to make the serial port available on a network for access from any network device.

Once connected to the serial management port, the terminal device or terminal server needs to be configured

prompt should display on the terminal device monitor. Log in using the factory default root account with its password of changeme, assuming this password has not been modified. 3Once connected to the network management port and assuming it has been configured, the ILOM CLI
can be accessed through this port using the secure shell command. The ILOM CLI login prompt should appear and the default root account and password is then entered.
4Using either method to log in, if you
are successful, the ILOM arrow prompt should display.5

The baud rate and the flow control are the only parameters that can
be modified on the serial management port.

NOTE: This same task can be accomplished the ILOM BUI by navigating
to the network screen using the navigation path Configuration->Network.
The network management port does come pre-configured to use 1a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol
server to get its IP address assigned. This requires that 2the MAC address of the network management
port be configured on a DHCP server that is connected to the same network as that of the network management port before setting up the rest of network management port configuration and verifying that 3the discovery mode is DHCP.
Another method is to configure
4a static IP address which just requires configuring the network
management port to 5a static discovery mode along with the other
6network management port parameters.
7The following set of ILOM commands are used to configure the port’s discovery mode, IP address,
gateway IP address, and network mask, along with a command to commit the parameter changes. 8Note,
this same task can be accomplished using the ILOM BUI by navigating to the network screen using the path displayed.

The ILOM tasks can also be accomplished using the ILOM browser user interface. 1By using the network
management port’s IP address in a BUI you can access 2the ILOM login screen. Then log in using

is tied to the product serial number and ILOM firmware version which can be displayed with the ILOM commands listed. To generate the service password use

password generator found on the link provided. This generates a 30 word password string 5that you will
enter back at the ILOM prompt using the command line displayed making sure any returns are replaced with spaces. This command generates a short 3 word password that allows you
6to enable or disable
service mode using this last ILOM command. 7Note, if the physical presence parameter is enabled, the
session command will require you to prove your physical presence by pushing the presence button.8

To access BIOS on this server you need to boot the OS, which is performed by executing the ILOM start command from the SP console. You then open a system console window to access the OS boot sequence.
1Escape the boot process by clicking on the F2 key. That will open the AMIBIOS Setup screen
that you see here. 2If you wanted to perform a network boot instead you would have clicked on the F12
key. 3If you wanted to verify the boot device or change it you would have clicked on the F8 key, instead.
4Notice that the BIOS firmware version is displayed on this screen.

The Intelligent Peripheral Management Interface, known as IPMI, 1is incorporated in the service
processor’s hardware and performs system monitoring and server management. Its command line
interface is accessible through the IPMItool. 2This software is available through the Tools and Driver DVD
or can be downloaded from the link displayed. Once IPMItool is installed and started up you will encounter an IPMItool command prompt where you can enter an IPMItool command.

Before starting any configuration and administration tasks it is recommended to secure the ILOM root account by changing its password.
1The ILOM commands displayed is an example on how to modify the
root password or any other account’s password. Within the ILOM BUI, 2the root password can be
modified using the navigation path displayed. 3Note, remember to test the new root password by exiting and logging in using the new password with
either the CLI or BUI.4

ILOM Account Extended Roles
Legacy Account Roles:
• Administrator
• Operator
Extended Account Roles:
• (a) admin – view/change all configuration variables states.
• (u) user management - perform user management functions
• (c) console – access of the remote and SP consoles
• (r) reset and host control – operate the system
• (o) read-only – view the state of the ILOM configuration variables
• (s) service – perform services-only commands in service mode.
NOTE: Each ILOM command or action is assigned the appropriate
roles. So only the user logged in with the matching roles can execute
the command or action.
One new feature of ILOM version 3 is the extended roles that can be assigned to the log in accounts for a finer grained division of the user roles.
1The roles of administrator and operator are the ILOM version 2
legacy roles that are being maintained with the addition of the extended roles. 2The admin role allows the user to view and change the state of all ILOM configuration variables which
authorizes the user to perform all ILOM functions. 3The user management role allows the user to perform
all ILOM functions related to user management and security. 4The console role allows the user to access
the remote and SP consoles along with viewing and changing the state of the ILOM console configuration variables.
5The reset and host control role allows the user to operate the system, which includes power
control, reset, hot-plug, enabling or disabling components, and fault management. 6The read-only role
allows the user to view the state of the ILOM configuration variables but cannot make any changes. 7The
service role allows the user to perform services-only commands in service mode. 8Note, each ILOM
command or action is assigned the appropriate roles. So only the user logged in with the matching roles can execute the command or action.

Once you are properly logged into ILOM, 1navigate to the inventory screen to verify the server’s hardware
configuration. The table listed contains 2the component name, which is a link to more information about
the component, 3its type, like CPU, DIMM, FMOD,
4and its fault status.

faulted components. 6Note, these components can also be listed using the ILOM command displayed by
placing the component path and name in the target field.7

Verifying the HW State using LEDs and ILOM
• LEDs
Power / OK green LED
OFF – AC power is not present or the ILOM boot has
not completed.
STANDY BLINK – Standby power is on, but the chassis
power is off and the ILOM SP is running.
SLOW BLINK– Startup sequence has been initiated on
the host.
STEADY ON – The server is powered on and all host
POST tests have completed.
Service Action Required amber LED (fault LED)
Individual amber fault LEDs (Fan, Power Supplies and
temperature)
The system LEDs located in the front and rear of the server chassis consists of a set of standard LEDs. 1The green Power/OK LED indicates the operational state of the chassis.
2When it is turned off, it can
either be due to AC power not being present or that the ILOM boot has not completed. 3If it is in a standby
blink state, the standby power is on the chassis power is off and the ILOM service processor is running. 4In a slow blink state, the host startup sequence has been initiated.
5When the Power/OK LED is steady
on, the server is powered and POST has completed. 6The amber Service Action Required LED will light whenever a hardware failure is detected
7then you can
use the individual amber fault LEDs to start isolating the problem.

The ILOM’s CLI and BUI interfaces have a Fault Summary that can be displayed using the show command or the following the navigation path listed. In either case, the output indicates whether there are any faulty components.

Power Up Sequence
1. AC power connected the ILOM on the SP starts to
boot while the Power/OK LED remains off.
2. Once the ILOM is booted the Power/OK LED starts
to blink in the standby blink mode.
3. If the server is then booted, the Power/OK LED will
slow down its blink rate in what is referred to as the
slow blink mode.
4. Once the server passes POST and has booted, the
Power/OK LED remains steady in what is referred
to as the steady on mode.
Knowing the server’s power up sequence can assist in locating a system problem. 1When AC power is
connected, the ILOM on the SP starts to boot while the Power/OK LED remains off. 2Once the ILOM is
booted the Power/OK LED starts to blink in the standby blink mode. 3If the server is then booted, the
Power/OK LED will slow down its blink rate in what is referred to as the slow blink mode. 4Once the
server passes POST and has booted, the Power/OK LED remains steady in what is referred to as the steady on mode.

Accessing the Preboot Menu
Accessing Preboot menu:• Method 1: During SP boot, type “xyzzy” when the following
message appears “Booting linux in x seconds...”
• Method 2: Hold down the node Locator button for two seconds
while the SP is resetting
ILOM Preboot MenuType "h" and [Enter] for a list of commands, or "?" [Enter] forcommand-line
key bindings. Type "h cmd" for summary of 'cmd„ command.
Warning: SP will warm-reset after 300 seconds of idle time.Set 'bootretry' to -

'<null>'.
Preboot>

Another utility available on the SP is the Preboot menu. It provides some administrative and well as diagnostic capabilities. There are two methods to access the Preboot menu.
1In the first method, when
you are on the remote console, type “xyzzy” while the SP is booting at the point where the message displayed here shows up on the console.
2In the second method, when you are in front of the server, you
can hold down the Locator button for two seconds while the SP is resetting. 3Using either method, the Preboot prompt should then display indicating that your within the Preboot
menu, as you can see here. Now click on the attachment tab and select the Preboot Access and Preboot Help entries to display a sample SP reset output and a list of Preboot commands.

Resetting the ILOM Password using Preboot

If the ILOM password is forgotten there is a Preboot menu method to
set the ILOM password back to factory default.
Reset the ILOM root account password back to factory default::
• Access the PreBoot Menu
• Reset the passwordPreboot> unconfig password
preserve_password=no
• Reset the SP
If the ILOM password is forgotten there is a method using the Preboot menu to set the ILOM password back to factory default.
1Once the you reach the PreBoot prompt, as we did earlier in this presentation,
use 2the unconfig command to set the preserve password parameter to “no”,
3then reset the SP. The SP
ILOM root account’s password should now be changeme, its factory default.4

Serial Port SharingA new facility called port sharing, available through ILOM, that is
available to share the ILOM user interface and OS console on the
serial port.
Advantages of port sharing:• More reliable operation than “start /SP/console”
• Switched ownership persists across reboots of the SP
NOTE: It is recommended to setup SP network access before
switching ownership to host console or else the only way to
switch back to SP console will be from Preboot menu
A new facility named port sharing, available through ILOM, controls whether the ILOM user interface or the OS console is configured to use the serial port.
1Yes, the ILOM start command was used to enable
the OS console on the serial port, but port sharing is more reliable than the start command 2and switched
ownership is persistent when a SP reboot occurs. 3Note, it is recommended to setup SP network access before switching ownership to host console or else

Configuring the Boot Device using BIOS
To set up a boot device from BIOS, navigate to the Boot screen and 1select the Boot Device Priority entry.
2This will open a screen with a list of possible boot devices in priority order. You can change the boot
priority of a device by clicking and dragging the device up or down in the list. You can also add or remove boot devices to the list, up to a maximum of 46 devices.

• Select the Upgrade Mode (Browser, TFTP, FTP, SFTP, SCP,

and path to the image
• Upload the new firmware

You can perform a firmware upgrade using 1the ILOM BUI or CLI. The easiest method, assuming the
upgrade firmware has been downloaded to your laptop, is to perform a upgrade using 2the browser
mechanism from the ILOM BUI. The other available mechanisms are listed. Since you selected the Browser mode, you do not have to provide the server IP address, an account and password but you do if using any of the other methods. You do have to locate the image or provide its full directory path with any of the modes you use. Finally, select the Upload button to upload and install the firmware image that contains ILOM and BIOS. 3You can also perform this task using the ILOM load command. A command similar to the one displayed
can perform the upload. Notice it is using a FTP mechanism and the server’s IP address, account and password are all part of the example.

The Complex Programming Logic Device may have up to two sets of firmware. 1One for the main board and the
other for the flash riser. Each one is upgraded independently of the other, though you need to check for any dependencies between the two.
