Chapter 7-6Families of Linear Graphs

Page 2: 7 6

Terms and Concepts (A) Family of graphs: a group of graphs that

has at least one characteristic in common. There are two basic families of graphs:

Graphs of lines that have a common slope Graphs of lines that have the same x or y

intercept In order to determine whether or not graphs

belong to the same family: plot points according to the linear equation and

compare the resulting graphs Or, re-write the linear equation in point-slope

form and compare the slopes and y-intercepts

Terms and Concepts (B) Parent graph: the simplest of the graphs in

a family y = x is the parent graph in the family that

contains y = 3x and y = 1/4x If the slope is positive, an increase in its

value will increase the steepness of the line If the slope is negative, a decrease in its

value will increase the steepness of the line. As the value of b (in a linear equation)

increases, the line shifts up the y axis.
