JULY CONCERT BY THE SPRING JULY 2, 5:00 PM

Alleys, Trash and Treasure

I lived in a part of Richmond that has alleys. Alleys are fascinating. People put out their trash cans and recycling for pick-up in the alley. They also put out things for the “alley shoppers” as well---chairs, televi-sions, pots, just about anything. If left by the trash can it is a signal that it is fair game for anyone to take. Artists find something which they weave or paint or weld into pretty amazing art. I found small scooters and a bike for my grandsons. Just a bit of clean up and they were ready to use.

Alleys remind us that everybody has trash---food waste, broken bits of things, dog poop tied up in plastic bags, empty packages, scratched CDs that no longer play well . Everybody has trash--material and spir-itual. The spiritual trash is harder to discard—the tangled hurts, the poopy prejudices, the sharp shards of unforgiveness, the broken rela-tionship with God and others. Often times we keep our spiritual trash under wraps where we and no one else can see it.

It is liberating to me when people are honest about what they see as their spiritual garbage. In a Bible study, someone said with a smile, “I just hate it when God hits me between the eyes with my own judgmen-talism, don’t you?” The whole room relaxed as folks realized that someone else had a similar struggle. God can use even our spiritual struggles to help another.

God can take what we thought was ugly and worthless and make it into something that can relax others or be encouraging to others. A flash of insight comes and we reach out in acceptance to another. A bridge is built over the troubled waters of a damaged relationship. Or by the grace of God, we find that we can trust God more.

July will be the time we celebrate the 241st anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. This year Tinkling Spring will celebrate 277 years of continuous ministry in this place by a Presbyterian community of faith. Jamestown as the first permanent English colony will celebrate 410 years. Anniversaries or other celebrations that mark milestones in our own lives help us to understand who we are and where we have been and hopefully indi-cate where we will be headed in the near future. I like to think about these kinds of celebrations because they help me to take stock of our national life and offer prayers of thanks for the history that we share that has made us the people we are today. The same can be said about the anniversaries and celebrations in our own lives. This July 16 will mark the 48th year of my ordination after graduating from seminary in May of 1969. My friends reminded me that I really have 50 years of pastoral ministry as I served two fields of ministry while in seminary. From June 1967 until May 1968, I was serving as a student minister at the Old Providence Church in Gum Springs which dates from 1949 and the South Plains Presbyterian Church in Keswick. From June 1968 until May 1969, I served Bethany Church in Zuni, Virginia. Some of you may know about the Zuni Presbyterian Home that is located in Zuni. While I was assigned to Bethany Church that summer as student pastor, my wife Helen went on a mission trip to Mexico with the Presbytery of Norfolk. I lived at the Zuni Home that summer and interacted with six challenged young men as the Zuni Home was just beginning. That experience gave me a great understanding of challenged people and their gifts and helped me to appreciate them. As the mission trip ended, the pastor of Bethany Church announced that he would be resigning and I was asked to stay on there even as I finished my last year of seminary. Fifty years have passed very quickly and I am grateful for all of the experiences that have contributed to the pastor I am today. It has not always been an easy journey but it has been a rewarding one. My sense of call, that came to me in the Fall of 1961, has remained strong. I am grateful to God for His faithfulness in this journey and know God will continue to guide and direct me in the time ahead.

Love and Blessings,

Merle

A WORD FROM OUR PARISH ASSOCIATE

Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church Nurtured a Life of Service

Cindy Corell, Tinkling Spring Deacon and Mission Co-worker

She is the Presbyterian Hunger Program/Joining Hands facilitator in Haiti Contact: Cindy Corell ([email protected])

Read more on her home page at www.presbyterianmission.org/ministries/missionconnections/cindy-corell/

About Cindy Corell’s ministry

Based in Port au Prince, Haiti, as a Joining Hands network companionship facilitator, Cindy Corell connects presbyteries and churches in the United States with a network of churches, grassroots groups, and nongovernmental organizations in Haiti. The world-wide Joining Hands networks strive to alleviate poverty and suffering through community education, advocacy, alternative economic activities, lifestyle changes, and spiritual grounding.

While serving as a volunteer youth advisor at Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church, Cindy accompanied the young people on mission trips, hoping they would “find their missional feet” and experience the joy of serving others. However, as Cindy participated in mission in settings ranging from the surrounding community to national destinations, she became keenly aware that serving others in Christ’s name was having a profound impact on her own life. Her spiritual awareness deepened and she was “ready to dive deep into the sea of serving others.”

In 2010, when she made her first trip to Haiti, Cindy sensed a heartfelt connection with this Caribbean country and its people. “I learned that everything I’d ever accomplished in 48 years of living had prepared me for being in that land of beautiful people,” she says. “I was forever changed, and I could no longer be satisfied in an ordinary job and only finding fulfilling and meaningful work on the side.”

So Cindy left a 27-year career as a journalist to accept a Presbyterian mission appointment in Haiti. She knows that ministry there is fraught with challenges and frustrations. When facing difficult situations, Cindy says she is confident that family, colleagues, friends, and supporters will stand with her. She realizes that progress will come slowly, and she vows to “rejoice in triumphs, however small.” Cindy says she hopes her work with people in Haiti and the United States will result in transformed lives in both countries. Please keep Cindy and the Presbyterian Hunger Program in your prayers.

Gifts and Memorials For the Month of July

For the Second month in a row I thank you for your faithful prayers and encouragement. The two medical events were unrelated and unexpected. Our Lord gives us surprises along with the medical people to meet them and the loving support of family and friends. “Praise God from Whom all blessings flow.”

Ramona J. Bosserman

Dearest Family of Faith,

My words are inadequate to express the extent of my gratitude for all of your prayers, encouragement, cards and gifts as I worked toward the completion of my degree from Mary Baldwin University. I was over-whelmed by your thoughtful expressions and the dinner celebration to mark this milestone and the occasion of my 15 years of service as the Director of Christian Education. You may never know how much you are loved and how grateful I am to serve alongside each of you, but I pray I might return to all of you even a portion of the love you have so abundantly given to me . I look forward to all God has planned for this family of faith in the years ahead.

With gratitude to God,

To my TSPC family, No one wants surgery, but what fabulous Christian love has been showered on me. Thank you for the prayers, visits, delicious foods, cards, and phone calls. Every act of kindness was greatly appreciated by Harold and me.

June PreK Camp: Creation Celebration was a Blast!

Six three to five-year-old children enjoyed learning about God’s creation during their week of PreK Camp, June 5-9. There was homemade moon sand, marshmallow and pretzel creatures, life-

size drawings, favorite children’s stories, and of course, learning about everything God has created, and is still creating today.

The second PreK Camp is taking place July 10-14. Kathy Britts and Harriet Thompson look forward to welcoming the twelve campers to a week of “Riding the Waves” (Bible lessons with a water theme).

MISSION MINISTRY Joining Hands, Walking Together, and Serving All

Wow! Thank You to All Who

Served breakfast on June 17th or lunch at Disciples Kitchen in Waynesboro on May 16th and June 19th. Children from our Faith in Action Camp served at Disciples Kitchen on June 20 and 22, under the

direction of Harriet Thompson. Staffed our own Food Pantry distributed on May 18th and June 15th

Gave to the Diaper Ministry for distribution at the Food Pantry and through the Love INC Loving Your Neighbor Program and to mother at Ruth’s Warm House for Women and Children. (Personal hygiene products were also given to the mother.)

Purchased bulk hamburger and fresh chicken for the residents at the Ruth’s WARM House for Women and Children.

Eight people served as hosts and other Tinkling friends helped with the Loving Your Neighbor Classes for Love INC on the eight Thursdays in May and June. These classes are held at Tinkling Spring.

Two people volunteered in the Love INC Resale Store located on Jefferson Highway

Provided 18 pounds of spaghetti, salad dressings and five cakes for an Italian Fundraising Dinner for Summerlee, which is a home repair ministry in West Virginia. Nine of our folk enjoyed the delicious

dinner.

Prepared and service dinner for the Loving Your Neighbor Classes on Thursday, June 22, for our neighbors attending the classes and a national training group.

Haiti Trip—200+ Children

John Reed, Carla Byrd, and Page Hearn from Tinkling went June 9th-16th to Haiti with two pharmacists

from West Virginia. Thanks to this team, 200 children received six months of cavity prevention, newborns received onesies and blankets, children coming to the clinic in the near future will receive vitamins courtesy of the two pharmacists from West Virginia. Many children received much needed Claritin, and

approximately 30 individuals were given vision tests. God’s love was everywhere, given by our team and from those with whom they interacted. All the children enjoyed things like glow sticks, soccer balls, and food treats. John, Carla, or Page would be glad to tell you more about the trip. Please prayerfully consider

being the team next year. Financial donations are always welcome to help with supplies taken on the trips. A donation container is located on the mission table located across from the officers’ mailboxes.

Mission Café: The Aroma, the Food, the Stories! Jay Moffett really knows how to smoke pork! Approximately 70 folks enjoyed Jay’s delicious pork and

many dishes prepared by members of our church on June 14 for our first Mission Café…Serving Others. Thirty-seven jars of peanut butter were received and tagged with a Bible verse for the food pantry for the

Summerlee Mission Trip. Summerlee is an opportunity for children and adults to join other churches for house rehabilitation work for people who do not have either the physical or financial means to do the work themselves. Tom Yancey, John Dubinski, Henry Wood, and Joseph Marcum shared moving stories of their trips to Summerlee. The children enjoyed hayrides and a story by Rosalind’s friend, Cinnamon. Adults enjoyed Sue Ervin’s jams and jellies, Becky Conyers’s salsa, and Betsy Coleman’s pickles, which were tastes of things to come at the upcoming Fall Fest.

“Christmas in July” “Mission Café…Serving Others”

Wednesday, July 12th at 6:00 p.m. in the church’s pavilion. We are starting early on “Operation Christmas Child,” the Samaritan’s Purse Shoebox project that Tinkling has supported for many, many years. Please bring a bar of non-scented or mildly scented soap for the ministry project and a covered dish to share for the meal. Ham, cranberry sauce and beverages will be provided. There will be a hands-on project for all ages along with other fun activities for children. Please sign up for this great event on the Mission Table across from the officers’ mailboxes. See you there!

The primary goal of the Congregational Care Ministry is to maintain communication between church members to ensure that church personnel know when someone is in need of prayer or visitation. To accomplish this communica-tion, we have created 28 Care Groups with Care Group Leaders. The Care Group leaders are attempting to com-municate with their care groups three to four times a year, and the Care Group leaders will pass along important in-formation to church personnel.

In addition, the Congregational Care Ministry organizes meals for families, offers help with small household jobs, and maintains the church roster. If your family has a new baby, or a family member is sick, hospitalized, recovering from surgery, or has another reason that makes meal prep difficult, we would like to help. We offer meals for a few days or until you are able to resume care for yourself and/or your family. Webb Thomas and Lara Marcum are our meal organizers. They can be reached through the church office, your care group leader or individually. Webb can be reached at 540-942-4503 or [email protected], and Lara can be reached at [email protected]. Please let us know if you or someone in our church family needs a meal. Also, if you would like to be on the call list to provide meals, please let Webb or Lara know.

Congregational Care ministry is also willing to help with small jobs around the house. If you have a minor house repair, need someone to help you grocery shop or run errands, please let us know. You can contact our Small Jobs Ministry through your Care Group Leader or through the church office. If you would like to serve on this ministry, please let us know.

Lastly, our ministry is charged with maintaining an accurate church roster. If your address or phone number changes, please be sure to tell either the church office or your care group leader. We want to have accurate information and stay in touch with everyone.

As the current chair of this ministry, please contact me if you have any questions. God bless!

CONGREGATIONAL CARE MINISTRY

We suddenly find ourselves in the midst of summer which means that 2017 is half gone!! It seems so unreal but facts are facts and soon another school year will begin. All the TSPC Food Pantry workers have stayed busy this summer going about their mission of providing for those less fortunate. This task becomes more challenging for the Food Pantry during vacation periods especially in regard to low income families whose

children are at home all day without the benefit of school lunch programs. Those of us with adequate incomes need not be concerned where the next meal is coming when everyone is at home - but we must realize that there are many for whom this is a real worry! This is where YOU, our church family, need to make sure that this Ministry continues to thrive. You have been generous with your support each and every month allowing us to distribute 85 boxes of food in May and another 69 in June. In addition, we provide other food allotments during the month to those we know are in special need. Again, we could not do this without the help of many other people such as the U.S. Postal workers from Waynesboro who generously shared with our Food Pantry donations from their recent food drive. And we would be remiss if we did not mention our friend John Smith from Calvary U.M.C, who always remembers us when he has extra food to share. What a wonderful and kind man he is to many! These are just a few of many whom God sends our way to make it possible for us to do His work. While sharing these thoughts with you, a scripture comes to mind that keeps us focused on His work: - 1 John 3:17; "IF ANYONE HAS MATERIAL POSSESSIONS AND SEES A BROTHER OR SISTER IN NEED, BUT HAS NO PITY ON THEM, HOW CAN THE LOVE OF GOD BE IN THAT PERSON?"

To God we give ALL the glory for His many blessings - From our hearts to yours we humbly say "Thank You." Amen.
