Yet again, I have reason to be proud of the good people of Church of the Good Shepherd. We are surely

blessed, and I am surely blessed to be your priest.

A few weeks ago, Jack Daugherty came to your Vestry with a proposal. Apparently, the children of Pitman

who receive lunches through the public schools are not able to receive those lunches once school is out. But the

Food Bank of South Jersey is able to provide bag lunches if a place could be found to distribute them. So Jack

proposed to the Vestry that we provide the space and recruit volunteers to offer these lunches to the children of

Pitman. At first we thought we would be doing this one day a week, but the FBSJ said that was impractical and

we would need to take on three days a week. Chuck Lezenby, our Clerk of the Vestry works closely with the

FBSJ and he said that was about right. Jack already had over 20 volunteers. The Vestry voted again and decided

to take on three days a week. Meanwhile the list of volunteers has grown to over 25 and counting! This is really

impressive and I am so grateful for this generous outpouring of time and spirit.

Sue Dixon has volunteered to coordinate volunteers for which I am also very grateful. We have decided that the

children will enter and exit the Parish Hall by the ramp entrance. We have the necessary rubber gloves for food

handlers. Access to downstairs will be blocked off. The bathrooms in the office wing will be available for those

who need them. With all the volunteers we should be able to staff enough people to keep an eye on everything and

clean up afterwards. We are expecting maybe around 25 kids to start, but the number could easily grow!

Now in reference to the quote above, I don’t know if we will be entertaining angels. Maybe Pitman

schoolchildren aren’t necessarily angels. But then again do any of us know what angels are really like? Maybe

angels are a little wild and a lot of fun!

I pray that we all have a lovely summer. Our Parish Hall is now air-

conditioned, which helps with Coffee Hour. People are sticking around

after church on Sundays! Since Sunday School isn’t meeting for the

summer, I am offering a Children’s Sermon preceding the usual sermon

every Sunday except for the Sundays with Baptisms. I think a Baptism

is a lesson in itself! We also offer “The Sunday Paper” coloring pages

for children.

I know most of us can’t take a lot of time off, but take the time this

summer to sit and relax – with a good book – petting the dog (or cat!) –

drinking an iced tea – have a chat with a friend – or just sit and do

nothing for a while. It’s all prayer. You’d be surprised how much you

can accomplish!

OUTREACH

We have not received any clothing for Camden for over a month now! We take all donated clothing and shoes to St. Wilfrid’s Episcopal Church in Camden to be distributed at their monthly clinics. This is a very important ministry for the people of Camden. They are in desperate need of men’s shoes and clothing! If you have anything in good condition that you can give away, please drop it off in manageable size bags on our front porch! We will be happy to deliver them for you to those who can truly use them. Please no coats or winter clothing yet! They have no place to store them and neither do we!

Each Sunday during Communion time, our team of Pray-ers offer prayers with our parishioners. We have now expanded this meaningful ministry to our Saturday evening Holy Eucharist at 5:30pm.

After you receive Holy Communion, if you want/need additional prayers, there will be a team of Pray-ers in the front of the Church who are willing to pray with you. These prayers can be offered in joy for a Blessing you have received, or can be to help ease a burden which lies on your heart. Please take advantage of this wonderful ministry of our parish. All prayers are confidential.

A Partnership with Mannino’s Cucina Italiana

Vito Mannino (owner of Mannino’s Cucina Italiana) has agreed to a partnership with the Church of the Good Shepherd. A donation will be made to the church of 10% of the luncheon or dinner bill for every member who dines at the restaurant (located at 126 South Broadway - between the bakery and the Police Station). Please notify your server that you are a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd before placing your order. The restaurant is open Monday thru Thursday and Sunday from 11:00AM until 9:00PM and Friday and Saturday from 11:00AM until 10:00PM. Reservations are recommended on Friday and Saturday evenings. The food is excellent!! Your support of this partnership will be greatly appreciated!!

Prayer Shawl/Caring Hands Ministry

Every so often we get a request for a Prayer Shawl to be given to someone in need. Sometimes it is during an illness, sometimes during grieving periods after the loss of a loved one. The Shawls are crocheted or knitted by the women in this ministry. Every other Tuesday morning you will find our Caring Hands Group knitting/crocheting the shawls in our Conference room. They are made with prayer for those who will receive them. I can’t begin to tell you of the peace and comfort these shawls have brought to so many people. They need not be members of our parish. Need is spread everywhere. If you know of a need, just ask Pat Braidwood.

THE FOOD PANTRY

We have changed our approach for collecting food

donations for the Pitman Food Pantry. Each week

we will be collecting a different food item. We

will announce the upcoming needed food item each

week in the trifold. Also we will have a monthly list

in the Crook.

Food donations for June are:

7/1 & 2 – Canned Fruit

7/8 & 9 – Tuna

7/15 & 16 – Jelly

7/22 & 23 – Cereal

7/29 & 30 – Canned Corn

All donations are greatly appreciated and accepted.

The Pitman Food Pantry is also in need of

volunteers to help on Tuesday evenings to give out

food. They are open on even dated Tuesdays each

month from 6pm – 7pm.

WOMEN'S BIBLE STUDY

The Thursday Women's Bible Study will resume in

September (date TBA). We will be using Marcus

Borg's book "Reading the Bible Again for the First

Time." If you would like to begin reading during

the summer, you can order your book from amazon

(or other providers). We will be discussing a

chapter at a time so you don't have to pre-read the

Treasurer's Blog - July 2017 Results through May 2017

Our envelope income for five months has exceeded our estimate. It appears that while we didn’t receive as many pledges for 2017 as we had hoped, the offerings reflect that our unpledged income is strong. The financial team is appreciative of your support.

Our expenses are in line with our estimates so far this year.

Please look for the special envelopes in the box of your pledge envelopes and include something in them no matter how small or large in addition to your normal contributions. All of those “extras” add up during the course of the year to help us meet our expenses. Thank you for all of your support.

The above report is specific to our operating expenses. The Property Committee is now meeting once a month to review a list of major repairs and capital improvements. These items are paid for by our capital improvement fund. This fund is supported through part of the Holly Fair proceeds and special donations. Several members of the Property Committee have developed a long- range plan for things that break or wear out. A fund named the Squirrel’s Nest has now been formed for financing the replacement of these items rather than having to handle them in an emergency situation. So far we have collected $972.

Thank you God for the Quest BY ALICE AULTMAN

The dictionary defines quest as a search. Another source tells us that going into pursuit, expedition, mission, or hunt or even following a craving: all of these words cover quest.

Did you ever lose an important paper, the scrap with an all important phone number or even the grocery list started a few days ago? Or ever lose track of a wallet, car keys or your checkbook?

Maybe you haven’t but I sure have. Such was the situation as I was looking for a paper that had to be filled out concerning a health issue. I went through all of the possible stacks of printed materials that had been filed and eventually found what I was looking for. In the process I found some papers that had been missing and also some items that had been forgotten but should have been addressed some time ago.

This may be God’s way of reminding us to always put items in places where they can be found, file items where they belong as soon as they are presented and in short ORGANIZE. When I think of all the time I have spent searching for things that should have been put away when they occurred it is apparent much time has been wasted that could have been used to better advantage. It also might be that for some reason God wanted me to go through the search to remind me of something else that should have been done.

So for whatever the reason, THANK YOU GOD for sending me on a Quest. You truly are a great and wonderful God and although I do not always understand your reasoning, I am blessed to be a part of your family.

Summer Lunch Program

We at Good Shepherd have the opportunity to improve the lives of our community's children by working in partnership with the Food Bank of South Jersey (FBSJ) to serve lunches to children this summer. What a great opportunity this is for us to open our doors and receive our neighbors into our beloved church.

More information can found on the Food Bank's web site at www.foodbanksj.org. The Summer Food program is a program of the USDA and the NJ Dept. of Agriculture.

Area children are eligible to receive a bagged lunch supplied by the Food Bank. We will distribute lunch bags on Tues., Wed., and Thurs. between the hours of 12:00 and 2:00. The program will start on Tues., June 27th and run until Wed., Aug. 30th.

All children between the ages of 5 and 18 can receive a lunch bag. There are no qualifications to receive a lunch. Children just need to show-up. They must eat the lunch on site.

I, Sue Dixon, am responsible for signing-up and assisting our Good Shepherd volunteers. We have three jobs:

1. Counter. We must carefully count the number of children who receive meals. A great "sit down" job.

2. Hall Monitor to keep an eye on the restrooms and ensure that no child escapes into other areas of the church.

3. We need 3 or 4 people each day to hand out lunches, help the children with their lunches, and general clean-up.

We will start at 11:45 and should be finished by 2:15, at the latest.

We have a special need for volunteers to help us get off to a great start. We need people on Wed., July 5th and Thurs., July 6th. Please contact me to volunteer on these days or any days throughout the summer.

This is truly an exciting project. Thank you in advance for your commitment to making it a success. A special thank you to Jack Daugherty for his vision, for shepherding us through the first steps, and for serving as Site Coordinator.

HAPPY SUMMER!

Yes – I love all the seasons but, for me, summer always gives me the feeling that I have “extra” freedom to spend time exploring more of what life has to offer. I am sure it is something that was ingrained in me as our educational system granted us several months off in the summer and I have never lost the joy of that feeling! The longer days allow us to enjoy the light of the sun giving us more time to “see” more and experience more! CS Lewis once said, “I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen; not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else”.

Where will this summer take you and your family? For Ellie and me, we have several short outings planned. A one day adventure (July 7) will take us to Camden to take part in the Summer Festival held in the park next to St Andrew’s Episcopal Church. A few folks from the Camden Christmas committee will spend the day helping out and doing what we can to lay a foundation for our Christmas plans coming later in the year.

During the months of July and August, we will spend several days attending the Summer Camp, sponsored by Project Interaction at St Paul’s in Camden where we believe the Lord will help us find over 100 children who are not attending St Paul’s, and get to know them and then invite them to the coming Fall events being planned at St Paul’s which will lead to St. Nicholas Sunday!

In late August, Ellie and I will take two of our nieces away for a 4 day trip. We are attempting to take a combination of grandchildren and nieces and nephews, two at a time, on some type of get-away almost every year so we get to know them a little differently when we have them to ourselves!

It will be interesting to see what God has planned for all of our activities for this summer. What do you have planned?

Maybe everyone from Good Shepherd should all plan on getting together in September and share the summer experiences just to see where God led us during the summer months, and what opportunities he gave to us to share His love with friends and, yes, even strangers.

A few months ago at St Wilfrid’s in Camden. I challenged the congregation and gave them a

summer homework assignment. (I might have to check in on them to see if they did it!) I want them to take a blank sheet of paper and write down one, or more, names of people who are not attending St Wilfrid’s and should be. Then, you guessed it, call them, or email, visit them, or, hold onto your hats with this one, write to them and invite them to come to church. They need to keep the invitation open and remind them over and over. Jesus shows us in Luke 11 that persistence in prayer is very important and, I believe, that persistence needs to be carried into our individual ministries.

Why not do the same at Good Shepherd? Did a person’s face or name just come to mind? Call them – see how they are doing and, be bold – ask them to come with you to church. All those people you just thought about are coming to your minds for a reason. I cannot wait to hear the complaints from you; “Carl, I cannot get those people off my mind, thanks to you!!” Well, you are welcome!!

Enjoy the warmth of the summer sun. Let it remind you of God’s love for all his family. Be blessed.

Contemplative Prayer Time Before Our Worship Services

For those who seek a time for quiet prayer on Saturdays and Sundays, Mother Susan opens the church on Saturdays at 4:30 PM for the 5:30 PM service. We ask that 4:30 PM to 5:15 PM be a quiet prayerful time. Likewise, for Sundays, she will be in the Church at 9 AM for a quiet time from 9 AM to 9:30 AM. We ask that all who come early to church honor these times as times for quiet prayer and contemplation.

The next session will take place on Sunday, July 2 following the 10 a.m. service. We will be viewing part two of our series on Islam. The topic is "Misconceptions about Islam: In Which We Help You Adjust Your Malarkey Filter". Last month's discussion was awesome! Feel free to step in for this next one to learn more.
