Today’s Readings

"It is the smallest of the seeds, yet it grows into

the biggest shrub of them all." First Reading: Ezekiel 17:22-24 This selection concludes an allegory told by the prophet about the weak king of Judah. The “tender shoot” is the future King David. The lesser “trees” are the kings of the nations surrounding Judah. Second Reading: II Corinthians 5:6-10 The fact is that our bodies, so prized by the Corinthians, can themselves be obstacles to our “going home to Christ.” Our bodily activities will be the base line for our judgment someday. Gospel: Mark 4:26-34 Here are two parables about the growth of the kingdom of God. One of them stresses that growth is guided by God. The other highlights the kingdom’s small beginnings destined ultimately to be a great tree.

The Word This Week

How does a tree grow? The scientists can give us their answers, but the miracle of life on our earth, in all its dazzling complexity and variety is exactly that - a miracle. God is responsible for the miracle of Nature and growth - how, we don’t know, but we accept God's guiding hand as a fact of

our faith. This mysterious growth in Nature is used as a parable today, for the life of the Church and the Kingdom of God. Just as a seed, planted and watered, turns by miraculous processes into something different and bigger and beautiful, so the seed of the Gospel will grow into something else, by some means we can never fully understand. And that is the grace of God, encouraging, prompting and helping all men and women of good will to swell the coming Kingdom of our God.

Dear Friends, I would like to Welcome Fr. Jose Abreu to our parish for weekend help. He is a Carmelite priest stationed in Miami. He has been here before on different occasions. From the time I learned that Fr. Carmelo Romanello would be taking a leave, I had been looking around for another priest to help us on the weekends. In my search, I came across Fr. Jose Abreu and he was kind enough to offer his services to our parish. Since he is mainly Spanish speaking, he will be doing the Spanish Masses each Sunday. As I had announced at the Spanish, on the first Sunday of every month, I will be celebrating the Spanish Mass and Fr. Abreu will be celebrating it on other Sundays. I welcome him to our parish and thank him for his kindness to help here. We honor our graduates this weekend. It is great to have all different graduates in our community – the Kindergarten Graduates, Middle School Graduates, High School Graduates and College Graduates. Along with their families, we too rejoice at their accomplishments and pray for their success in the future. Some will move on to further studies while others will be looking for a job. Whatever they have in future, we pray that the Lord will bless them in their upcoming endeavors. We have started using the projectors in the Church. In many ways we are still in the experimental stages because we cannot afford to get professional people to come and setup everything for us. So we have to take simple steps at a time. The computers presently are being handled by volunteers. Initially things are going to be not as smooth, as these are not professionals. Our volunteers are our youngsters, and I like to encourage them to be of service to the community. If you have any comments about how we can improve the service, please let me know. We

certainly cannot be considered a hi-tech church, but that does not mean that we cannot use technology in our service and that is exactly what I am trying to do. In getting everything on to the projector screens, I am trying to eliminate the need for missalettes. This way parishioners do not have to keep turning pages to follow the prayers, hymns and readings. Eventually I plan to eliminate the use of the missalettes and hymnals on Sundays and follow everything on the projector screens. Please do not hesitate to give your feedback about the same. Next month we will have the celebration of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. While it is a Haitian celebration, it is being held at our Church. I had written about this a couple of months ago, and now it is time for us to act. Since the celebration takes place here, we need to take ownership of what happens here. I am inviting volunteers this weekend to sign up for different tasks that need to be accomplished for the feast. There is a committee that organizes the celebration, but since it is in our church, we need to take control of what happens here and that is why I need the help of volunteers to make sure that everything runs smoothly. I am hoping that there will be enough parishioners to help with the coordination of different things for this feast so that everything will run smoothly. As it is our Church we need to do what is required to keep things in our Church in proper order. On my own, I cannot do much, but with your help, we can accomplish a lot. So please come forward to volunteer a few hours to help with the celebrations. If you have not signed up with the volunteer sheets at the end of the mass, you can still call the office to offer your service. I am praying that the celebration this year will be better organized and successful with the help of God and our dedicated parishioners. God bless you all,

Fr. George
