Page 70Hint: Make a chart and list eachset of possible combinations.Answer: There are 18 possiblecombinations.

Page 711. The probability that both

are girls is 1/3. There arefour possibilities whenfiguring out the gender oftwo siblings: girl-girl, girl-boy, boy-girl, and boy-boy.Given that Jerry has onesister, the boy-boycombination is impossible. So, there are three possiblecombinations, and only onewith both girls.

2. In the second case, theprobability of having twobrothers is 1⁄2. (The odds are“even” - 1 to 1.) The samefour possibilities for gendermust be considered. Girl-girl is not possible from thegiven information. Thestatement “the older one is aboy” also eliminates thegirl-boy option. This leavesonly two choices.

Page 72Answers will vary. The finalanswer should be the month, day,and year of the student’s birthday.

Page 73The small hose fills 1/45 of thetrough per minute. The largehose fills 1/30 of the trough perminute. To add the two speeds, find a common denominator. Inthis case, 1/45 = 2/90 and 1/30 =3/90. Now, add the two speeds:2/90 + 3/90 = 5/90 = 1/18. Sinceboth hoses can fill 1/18 of thetrough every minute, it will take18 minutes. Using both hoseswill save Krista at least 12minutes.

Page 74Hint: How many daily sharesof food do they start with?
