6 th December 2019 Dear Parents/Carers, Year 11 Pathway to Success This is the next edition of a regular email to Year 11 parents. Every two weeks we will send out this bulletin with details of support offered over the coming weeks. As you would expect it is very important to make sure that students continue to complete coursework and attend any necessary extra sessions. Hopefully this email will help you as parents and carers to encourage your son or daughter to make the most of what is on offer. As part of meeting the challenges of Year 11, I would ask that you encourage your child to act upon any advice or information received in the fortnightly emails. The impetus is now on them to put their best effort into achieving the results to which they aspire. Thank you for your continued support and please do not hesitate to contact me with any concerns in this vital year. Kind Regards, Mrs Katy Tavaga Head of Year 11 General Thank you to all parents and carers who have been supporting students through the PPEs over the last few weeks. We have now reached the half way stage and have two weeks left before Christmas. Advice on how to revise and what to revise is available in the Pre Public Exams Revision Planner. Results for the PPEs will be shared by subject teachers as and when they are marked, with the spring grade reports following shortly in the new year. Merry Christmas and a successful new year to all. English

Students have now completed both of the English Language Papers; these are being marked externally. This should ensure consistency of marking across the cohort and the same standard of marking that students will experience in the summer examinations, giving an accurate picture of students’ strengths and weaknesses. Class teachers will also review the papers in order to give specific feedback. We are hoping to be able to give students their results in the week beginning 13th January. Students will begin revising their Literature set texts in class. However, they are advised to revise the texts, specified by their class teacher, over Christmas. Students will complete Literature examination style questions in class towards the end of January. GCSEpod is available to all students and has a range of revision resources covering all of the texts studied. Suggested revision resources also appear in their PPE Revision Planner.

Geography

Year 11 have now completed their PPEs and can expect their results in January. They will receive results per paper and as an overall mark, when we go through the papers together. From now on, Year 11 will be completing the GCSE course, finishing People of the Planet and then Environmental Threats to the Planet.

History

Students should be continuing to work through their Cold War & Elizabeth Revision Guide. Each week students should complete a worksheet that comprises 10 questions to test knowledge. Students are encouraged to attempt the practice exam questions in their booklets and hand to their

teacher to get marked. We ask parents to please check that students have completed this, as some students are neglecting this.

If students need extra support or have missed any lessons then they should be attending the GCSE Drop In Clinic. This runs every Friday at lunchtime. Students should bring their

book so that the teacher can help them with any missed work. Students have one more History PPE to study for. They still need to sit the Cold War & Elizabeth paper. This will focus on, ‘the development of the Cold war 1947-56, the Cuban missile Crisis, Soviet invasion of Afghanistan & the End of the Cold war 1989-1991. For Elizabeth they need to revise, ‘Elizabethan government, early Elizabethan problems, Catholic plots & Anglo-Spanish relations’. Students have their revision guides for these exams. If they refer to the PPE booklet they can discover which worksheets would be best to revise from. We also suggest students use their class books as well as websites like BBC Bitesize.

Health & Social Care

Students can continue to use their flash cards to help with revision at home for the final exam in February 2020.

Information Technology (Cambridge National)

Is your coursework going to be finished in 2 weeks? Our ICT students are currently working on their coursework assignments –the deadline for their assignment will be end of the autumn term. Many of our students are a few hours behind on their coursework and have been prompted to attend appropriate intervention sessions at lunchtime and afterschool. It would be very helpful if students could be prompted to assess whether their coursework will be finished in two weeks’ time at home. Students are able to come to the Science Lecture Room any lunchtime or afterschool for extra support on their coursework. Students have an exam on January 10th (R012 Understanding tools, techniques, methods and processes for technological solutions). They will also be given an opportunity to resit this examined module in the Summer term. Key resources:

We have prepared on online checklist for students, which can be found at Tiny. They have used this resource in lessons, but should be updating their understanding as they revise at home. Students should pay particular attention to content marked (Exam? – Y)

Hodder Education Textbooks – “Cambridge National Level 1/2 Information Technologies” (ISBN 978-1-5104-2327-5). Students can request to borrow these textbooks from our class set during the revision period, although care must be taken to make sure they are still

available in lessons. It is recommended that students have bought a copy of this course book to use at home for their revision.

Revision materials e.g. flashcards, ring binders, plastic wallets can be provided to students free of charge on request. We encourage students to revise using a variety of styles, and not just reading and writing notes.

Music

Listening:

Information on musical elements online at BBC Bitesize

Skills-based content may be addressed with independent use of Auralia/Musition software

Yellow Pages a useful ‘first-stage’ revision resource for applied recall

More specific guidance is provided in the PPE Revision Booklet

Music PPE on 18th December The use of an AQA-specific GCSE Music revision guide is highly recommended from this point onwards, as it presents the key information required for the listening exam (details of two possible options are given below; click on either to follow hyperlink to possible retailers for purchase and please ensure that you view ‘Revision Guide’ and not ‘Study Guide’). This includes the elements of music and stylistic features students are expected to recognise, advice on how to tackle questions on unfamiliar music from all Areas of Study, notes on the study pieces, and a glossary of technical terms. In addition, CGP’s ‘Complete Revision & Practice’ guide comes complete with a CD to accompany practice questions provided.

Composition: Having received teacher feedback on their draft composition work, students should ensure that they are working to complete their pieces in line with the feedback. The next submission deadline is 12th December, at which point work on composition 1 should be largely complete. Performance: Many students have now completed at least one assessable performance recording. Students who have not yet done so must ensure that they have arranged a suitable time for their recording to take place. Individual feedback shared with students leading to a second recording opportunity should be addressed as soon as possible, to allow for this to be scheduled in a timely manner. Suitable choice of music must be discussed with instrumental/class teacher. Students should ensure they are well-prepared in advance of the deadline and aware of lessons that require specific equipment (instruments, sheet music including accompaniments if applicable) to be brought into school. NB students are responsible for ensuring that their performances meet with minimum duration requirements when combined with their intended ensemble performance. This is a minimum of one minute of ensemble performance and a total time requirement of 4 minutes overall.

Science Our Science PPEs start next week and with understandably students might be getting a bit overwhelmed and unclear on how to revise so much in such a short space of time. PLC or a personalized learning check list. Students have been issued these documents or new ones can be downloaded from Tiny (no log in required). Each page in the document states whether it is for paper 1 or paper 2. The science exams are all paper 1. Encourage your child to spend 10 minutes identifying THREE areas that would make the BIGGEST difference to their exam. Which bit of content do they feel they have never heard of or are clueless about. Then head over to bitesize, Seneca or dig out the revision guide to prepare for that area. Finally, try some practice questions on that topic on our exam bank website – Tiny or practice questions from the revision guide workbook. This strategy can make a big difference to the PPE grades, and more importantly, is the strategy students should adopt all the time.

Tassomai Deep in the middle of PPEs, more Tassomai may not be high on the list of priorities, but just like going to the gym, doing some practice, even if less than before, is really effective. Try to find 10 minutes outside of the usual revision blocks and once on the Christmas break, try not to abandon Tassomai practice totally. 10 minutes a day over the holidays is a small investment with a big gain in confidence.

Many of our students are absolutely storming through Tassomai and really seeing the gains, here is our new leader board and it is great to see so many new names this week. Please pass on a big well done to anyone on the leaderboards.
