Into the Sunset: The Forgotten

Cowgirl SingersFOR THE COURIER

Singer-songwriter Almeda Bradshaw will be taking audience members on a journey to learn more about forgotten women singers on Sunday, March 3, starting at 7 p.m., at the Valley County Pioneer Museum with free admission.

Dale Evan’s success as Queen of the West is owed to a century of cowgirls in show business. Made sensationally popular by dime-store novels and touring Wild West troupes, a public love affair began with the clean-cut cowgirl image which allowed women a respectable avenue into show business.

From Mary Ann Whittaker’s horseback exhibitions in the 1850s, to the Wild West Shows and vaudeville acts of the early 1900s, to the pioneer radio and recording artists of the 1920s, meet the forgotten women entertainers who wore buckskins and boots while yodeling their way into America’s heart.

10 Years AgoWednesday, Feb. 18, 2009The Glasgow Scotty wrestling

team made their annual trek to Billings to attend the All-Class State Wrestling Tournament at the Rimrock Auto Arena at the MetraPark on Feb. 13 and 14. It was the first time Glasgow quali-fied all of their wrestlers at the Eastern Divisional Tournament to move on to the state level. Making the trip were 14 Scotty wrestlers, four coaches and three managers. Over the course of two days, there were many highs and lows for the team as they hit the mats to compete and get the chance to move on to the cham-pionship round. At the conclusion of the first round of competition on Saturday morning, Glasgow guaranteed sending five Scotties to the big dance at the end of the night.

Members of the Montana School Board Association have recently returned from high-level meetings in Washington, D.C., hoping to press their legislative priorities and establish personal relationships with legislators. Dr. Charles Wilson, president of the Glasgow School Board and president-elect of the MSBA, at-tended a select meeting of state school board leaders and also the 36th annual Federal Rela-tions Network Conference of the National School Board Associa-tion, which attracted more than 1,000 people. Wilson will begin a one-year term as president of the MSBA in October. He said one priority of the school boards was to make sure schools were included in the stimulus package for the nation’s economy.

This was probably the most highly-anticipated game of the 3C District Tournament. The two powerhouses in the district pit-ted against each other for all the marbles. Hinsdale’s Lady Raiders had won the hardware last year. Saco’s Lady Panthers had never won the first-place hardware. A

lot was at stake for both teams. Even though the two schools had combined to win a State Championship in track last year, and the girls combined to take home the second-place trophy in volleyball this season, there exists an intense rivalry between the two teams and that became apparent in the game.

Haylie Shipp was recently awarded the “Most New Ac-counts” award by the Northern Broadcasting System, Inc. The radio and television network headquartered in Billings pre-sented its top awards at the com-pany’s annual corporate retreat. A 2003 graduate of Glasgow High School, Shipp is the daughter of Cal and Peggy Shipp of Glas-gow. A farm broadcaster on the Northern Ag Network, Hailey also works as a marketing spe-cialist for NBS, working with businesses across the Montana and Wyoming region, creating targeting marketing campaigns that utilize radio, television and

the Internet. She has been with NBS since 2008.

County Commissioner Gene Reimche, 56, who was in the fourth year of his first term, was killed in a one-vehicle accident on Highway 438, nine miles north of Highway 2, Jan. 20. According to the investigating Highway Patrol Officer Ron Warnes, Reimche, who was traveling north, failed to negotiate a curve and went off the left side of the roadway. The 1988 four-wheel GMC he was driving rolled two and one-half times, coming to rest on its top in the barrow pit. The truck traveled 130 feet after it left the roadway. The county commissioner, who was not wearing a seat belt, was partially ejected from the vehicle and pinned under it, Warnes re-ported. Reimche was pronounced dead at the scene.

Valley County officials have asked the federal government for help in a continued investigation

regarding possible health hazards at the former Opheim Radar Sta-tion located about 55 miles north of Glasgow. In a letter dated Jan. 18, Valley County’s three com-missioners, five health board officials, and county sanitarian notified the Region 8 office of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that they are “for-merly requesting a more exten-sive site assessment and timely mitigation of the environmental/public health risks.” That letter was signed by commissioners Art Arnold, Gene Reimche and Elea-nor Pratt and by Valley County Board of Health members Vir-ginia Bortas, Lawrence Palazzo, Lee Brown, Carlo Porteen and Jeff Alsberg. Jan Taylor, the county’s sanitarium, also signed the letter.

Ninety-eight-pound wrestler Brady Flaten came away from the Harlem Invitational Tour-nament with the Outstanding Wrestler Award after winning the 105-pound class. The fresh-

man proved he could move up a class and wrestle with the bigger boys, according to coach Mark Johnston. “Brady had to bump up a class because there weren’t enough 98-pounders. He beat a tough Valier kid for the cham-pionship and showed that he could wrestle in 105-pounders.” Flaten was leading Miller 10-8 when he pinned the Valier kid in three minutes and seven seconds. Glasgow also came away with a team trophy for winning the tour-nament, scoring 169 points.

Lustre and Opheim are hav-ing one of those years that they would like to forget. In fact, it’s been two straight bad years for the Vikings. The 1C Lions are currently sitting in sixth place in the league standings with a 3-7 record. The 3C Vikings are also sitting in sixth place, but with a 1-11 record. Both teams have been struggling this season, but things may be looking up for the two clubs next year, especially for the Lions. Coach Al Leland

has only three seniors on his ball team and only one of them starts. He will have 6’3” post player Jon Skillman and 6’2” post Jason Brown back next season. The two are hard to stop as is Luke Unger and Tyler Fast.

50 Years AgoThursday, Feb. 20, 1969Coach Ted Kato and his Glas-

gow Scotty wrestling team pulled the upset of the wrestling season last weekend when they upended the heavily favored Miles City Cowboys and brought home the first-place trophy from the East-ern Division Wrestling Champi-onships at Sidney. Kato and his 11-man squad surprised wrestling fans when they scored three firsts, two seconds and two fourths to win the team match with a razor-thin 67-65 victory over second-place Miles City. Hardin placed third with 58 points and Sidney finished sixth with 41. Glendive scored 35 points and Wolf Point finished last with 32. Winning firsts for Glasgow were Craig Hallock in the 95-lb. divi-sion, Milt Hallock in the 112-lb. division and John Krikorian who wrestles at 154 pounds.

Four Valley County high school students were named winners of the annual youth citizenship awards sponsored by the Glasgow Soroptimist club, according to an announcement made this week. Capturing top honors from the four high schools in the county which participated in the program were Norman Glese, Hinsdale High School; Jeanette Heinricks, Lustre Bible academy; Gene Shellerud, Oph-eim High School; and John McE-wen, Glasgow High School. Each of these students will receive a $25 savings bond at a recogni-tion dinner to be held at a later date. One of the students will be named county winner at the special dinner and will receive a $100 savings bond.
