69th ANNUAL MCCALL/NEW MEADOWS CAR TOUR
Friday, September 3rd our local Model T Club,
Model A Club and several other vintage car
clubs met in New Meadows at the Hartland Inn
to begin a weekend of fun and adventure in
Idaho’s Central Mountains. That day the groups
toured the Tamarack Saw Mill then socialized
and dined at Intersection BBQ.
On Saturday they drove through McCall and
took the back roads to Roseberry, a quaintly
restored community, for an Ice Cream Social.
Returning to McCall the groups visited Charlie’s
Garden to stroll through the foliage and drove
around Payette Lake. Back in New Meadows,
Gary McNary made a delicious spaghetti sauce
with buffalo meat donated by Sara Knapp, and
38 people enjoyed a spaghetti dinner.

The beginning of August we celebrated Freddie’s “79.75” birthday. Our daughters didn’t want to wait until his 80th in November because of school and winter travel, so we enjoyed the HEAT instead. We had a blast at Grayback Gulch campground in Idaho City. Even the Model A came to the party and entertained family as well as fellow campers.
Fred was in the right seat with Josh (16) in the driver’s seat from Boise to Idaho City. When we headed home, Leah (17) was in the driver’s seat and Fred in the right. Every family member that wanted to drove the Model A - at least around the campground. Numerous campers went for a ride in the rumble seat. At times it looked like a carnival ride as the Model A went round and round the campground as drivers and riders changed places.
On “Party Day” everyone wore a t-shirt they personally selected that reminded them of Fred. You can see a few of the choices in the pictures. The three absent grandsons had their t-shirts presented and their pictures were put on gallon milk jugs. Check out the back of the t-shirts.

Okay, Last night you loaded the dishwasher.
This morning you are cleaning the bathroom and kitchen.
What kind of gun did you buy, and how much did it cost? (or, What Model A did you drag home this time?)

LADY A’s CORNER
Alvin and Dee Borden’s son, Joshua, and
family visited them in June from Colorado.
This was the first time they’d come home
in four years, so they hadn’t seen their
Model A Coupe. “Grandpa and Dad took
Andyn, Mackenzie, and Astrid for a spin in
the rumble set, and they loved it! They
asked us to bring the car next time we
visit them in Colorado. We are definitely
NOT driving 940 miles in anything that is
not air conditioned, with automatic
transmission, and several other creature
comforts we like.”

August and September are very busy months for our Lady A’s. We are busy harvesting and freezing or canning the fruits from our trees and gardens. We have been visiting with family at home or on vacations. And we have helped get ready for Model A Club tours and activities. Soon we will get together to eat lunch, go to a movie (don’t miss “Jungle Cruise” - it was hilarious), visit the zoo, or other activities of interest. If you have an idea for us, please share with Elaine Hightower.

ROB AND CONNIE SPOFFORD’S CROSS COUNTRY ADVENTURE
They are headed to the east coast to attend a Model A Meet. They are using a northern route heading east and may use a more southern route on the way home. Lucky for us,
Connie writes everyday and adds pictures to document their travels. Enjoy some of the pictures she has posted!

MEET CLUB MEMBERS: ELVIN & ELAINE HIGHTOWER
Elvin and Elaine Hightower’s home and shop are the base for many of the Treasure Valley Model A Club activities. Elvin helps many of us in his shop as we repair, paint, and learn about our cars. Elaine organizes our Lady A outings. And most of our tours begin in their driveway.
Elvin’s hobbies have always been hunting and fishing. He added his passion for Model A’s when he got his first car in 1998 from Ken Hastings. “It belonged to Ken’s brother and father. Ken drove it all over Idaho selling maps, and was an active HAM radio operator. He parked the car in his back yard in Nampa in 1952. There it sat until I purchased it, and my father-in-law and I brought it back to life with a lot of help from Bert Caldwell, Frank Leonard, and a few others. It was a 1930 four door sedan, which I still have.” Elvin bought and sold Model A parts for a few years. He rebuilt a AA Truck that was shipped to Boston, and has rebuilt “a few other cars and pickups”. “With the help of Glen Clayton I have been able to assist others with their Model A’s.”
“One of the most enjoyable things has been taking trips to Model A Conventions from Grass Valley, CA to Portland, OR, Seattle, WA and Calgary, Canada. It has been my pleasure to serve as President of the Treasure Valley Model A Club and the Snake River Club.”
“My interest is now in helping others with their Model A’s. I currently have my original 1930 Model A Sedan, a 1931 Pickup, and a 1929 Hot Rod Style car with a Mercury Flathead motor in it. I hope to stay active and be able to help others with one of the most enjoyable hobbies you can get into. It’s a Family program.”
Elvin and Elaine will celebrate their 59th wedding anniversary in November. They are proud parents of two daughters, who have given them five grandchildren and five wonderful great grandchildren. Elvin worked as a meat cutter for M&W Market in Caldwell, as a Beef Boner (fabricator) for Idaho Meat Packing House, and worked as a Business Rep for the Meat Cutter Union for three years. In 1983 he went to work at the KIT RV factory as a welder, maintenance and Assistant Production Manager. He worked at Spectex, part of Micron, until he retired in 2002. At that time he built and they moved to the home and shop where they currently live. Elaine is a wonderful homemaker, canning and freezing produce from their garden, and helping to freeze meat and fish that Elvin brings home from his hunting and fishing trips.

B U S I N E S S N A M E
The Treasure Valley A's is a Model A Ford automobile
club located in the Boise area of Idaho. We are
dedicated to the restoration and preservation of the
Model A Fords from 1928 through 1931 by the Ford
Motor Company. Membership is not limited to owners
and is open to anyone interested in preserving the
memory of our past and the great impact that Henry
Ford made upon the world with his Model A.
The Treasure Valley A’s have had a long history in the
city of trees. Many of the club’s members have spent
most of their lives here in the area. The club was
formed around 1963 and its membership consisted
of only eight couples and a few cars. Since then the
club has grown to well over a hundred and thirty and
is one of the most active antique car clubs in the
state.
We would love to hear from you or even better, stop
by our next event.
