A WARM welcome to the Riverina Football Netball League. Wagga District JFL and the South West JFL which start their football and netball competitions this weekend. The program is equilivant to Auskick and the objective of the program is start building the relationship between football and netball in the junior age groups. The South West JFL has introduced the Under 1 J's netball grade this season which compliments the introduction of the Under 11 's competition in 2010. This is another implementation to build on the relationship of football and netball in our competitions. RFL ROUND ONE IN FOCUS

COLLINGULLIE-A.shmont Kapooka makes its long-awaited return to the R1verina Football League on Saturday when it travels out to Mangoplah Sponsground. The all-conquering Farrer League champions will reunite its rivalry with old sparring panner Mangoplah-Cookarclinia United-Eastlakes for the first time since 1997. The season opener looms as an intriguing battle with both teams fancying their chances as they enter the game on the back of vastly different form lines. The Demons have enjoyed a super last three seasons in the Farrer League under coach Shane Lenon enough so to fancy themselves in a move to the region's premier competition. CAK has not lost a game under Lenon on its way to three consccuuve premierships with the master coach rming the 2008 Demons squad as the best team he's coached. On the other hand, MCUE has been one of the more competitive RFL teams in recent seasons and finished as prelirrnnary finalists in last year's

competition. The Demons have lost a couple of handy players from last year's premiership team that embarrassed Marrar on grand final day. Best-on-ground in the premiership win, Chad Hamblin, joins talented midfielders Randy Munzel and Steve Jolliffe as three big departures from Crossroads Ow1I. While the three losses will be felt, the Demons have welcomed Sydney representative centre-holfforward Matt Withers to the club. and also welcomed back l11s team mate Ben Absolum. · Ned Mortimer has returned too, and already has a game with GWS Giants under his belt this preseason. while the likes of Mitch Pilon Josh McKenzie and Bryson Lashbrook all return from long-term injuries. The Goannas have lost some key personnel since last year's third-place finish with Sam Balding. Brad Turner. Graeme Reid all finding new homes. while Trent Balding is enjoying a year off. Former MCUE junior Andrew Lieschke will make

his first appearance for the Goannas in years, after a long stint with Queanbeyan. and his experience will be invaluable. CAK will be one of the major players in this year's competition. make no doubt about it. fhe biggest challenge the Goannas will find on Saturday is marking up the star-studded Demons forward line. Marc Gepperl returns to Mangoplah to play against his junior clulJ on the strength of two 100-gual seasons, plus another 99-goal year. Matt Withers will provide another huge target at centre-half-forward and is a player to watch. The likes of Brad Aiken, Josh Meiselbach, Jarrah Maksymow and James Debona will all spend time forward too and prove hard to match up on. The big question for MCUE is who to tum to in defence, with the departure of key defender Brad Turner. Jeff Millar often played a key defensive role but is oul with suspension. while Geoff Spriggs has not taken part in much of the Goannas' preseason and is no certainty 10 play

Youngster Ben Foster has been earmarked for centre-half-back. and the temptalion is also lhere to swing assistant coach Dylan de Britt back to defence. On this plus side, the Goannas will provide their own version of the twin towers in de Britt and coach Chris Willis. Throw in Andrew Lieschke and the Goannas have enough firepower to kick a winning score. but whether they get enough quality ball is another question. As in any game, the midfield will prove crucial and the Demons will get full advantage through Meiselbach in the ruck. The loss of Sam Balding in the ruck is huge, as MCUE turn to blood some up-and-comers against the talented Meiselbach. The Demons record over the past three seasons entitles them to favouritism against MCUE. In fact. the Goannas could be the first RFL team to feel the wrath of the Demons if they allow the visitors to get some momentum behind them. It's important to remember CAK's average winning margin in recent years is well over 10 goals.

WE WOULD like to welcome all of our players. committee, sponsors and supporters to anotl1er exciting season of Riverina Football & Netball League. It has been a long and hard off-season and all of the boys have put in a heap of hard work slogging it out on the training track, as have the ladies on the netball courts. Finally, after months of running and sweating, the time has come to return to the field for Uie

2011 season. The club is excited about the upcoming season, with big things expected both on and off the field. This year we have appointed two new coaches in our football grades with Ralph Lloyd taking over the under 17s position and Travis Cahalan the new coach of the reserve-grade team. The first grade team will again be coached by Chris Willis, who did an outstanding job to lead the boys to a preliminary final in his first season in charge. Alongside Chris will be Dylan de Britt. who will be the assistant coach for first grade. The club would also like to welcome a former junior player back to the club in Andrew Lieschke, who has returned to the Goarmas after a successful stint in AFL Canberra. The club has also picked up some other new players across the grades and we wish them all the best and hope they will fit right into our MCUE family. In the netball circles, the girls have also welcomed some new faces and the coaches will be as follows: Lisa Wade and Simone O'Brien (C grade). Michelle Heffernan (B grade) and Jess Skinner and Alana Higgins (A grade). Following the first grade game today we would like to invite everyone back to the clubrooms for a cold beverage and a catch up. So Until ..... LEETON-WHITTON CROWS

WELCOME back, the 2011 football season is here. We start the season hosting the Wagga Tigers in the seniors and Coleambally in the juniors. The Leeton Whitton Crows would like to welcome Coleambally into the South West Juniors League and their senior club into the Farrer League. It is good to get them into these comps to help strengthen them up. There hasn't been too many cl1anges in the coaching positions from last year with Jarrod in charge or the seniors. Mick the Two's and Langy the reigning premier's U/17s. The netballer's have had two new coaches this year with Shelley Brown taking over A & B grades and Claire Webb in charge al C & C2, with Foxy still in charge of the Juniors. The junior Club has the same lour coaches with Dave in control of the U/15s, Garry the U/13s, Troy the U/11 s and Gill the U/11 &

U/1 3sjunior girls in the new SWJL netball comp. The family/jumper presentation day last Saturday went off well with around 600 people making t11ere way to Irrigation Specialist oval for the afternoon. With around 210 Auskicker's signed up know Dayley and Broady are going to have their hands full when they kick off. A big thanks to Dave Meline on the many hours of work he has spent on designing, ordering and organising to get the third part of our lighting upgrade in and going for the start of the looty season. and all the guys who helped Dave out laying and wiring up the lights, it is very much appreciated. There is already a social calendar out for the season so keep and eye out for that. Our first function is a Toga night with Calcutta at Hotel Leeton after our first away game against Collingullie on Saturday the 16th. Then on the Sunday the 17th at the Irrigation Specialist Oval is our H1gh- lech day, which is a reverse draw for $ 30 a ticket so keep an eye out for those. On the Easter Sunday we have the sheep races on at the Jockey Club. So if you can lend a hand let Shane Whelan know as we will need all hands on deck.

WAGGA TIGERS

WCLCOME to all our new and our loyal footballers. netballers, sponsors and supporters to season 2011. Here·s hoping it is a successful, mjury & incident free year for all clubs. Thank you to Jupiter Motors our Major Sponsor for 2011 and congratulations to John and Margaret Bance and Scott and Fiona Bance - John Bance & Son Funeral Home on winning the Jumper Club Draw and naming rights on club jumpers for 2011, a worthy winner I'm sure you would all agree. The off season has seen an influx of new players

to the club. Tom Power has taken the reins from Damien Papworth & Josh Gaynor as coach for 2011 and with new recruits Breu Doswell. Matt Doswell, Leigh Cameron, John Anstee, John Simpson and Todd Krause to name a few along with the bulk of the playing group staying on lrom last year and having learnt and grown under Pappy & Josh's leadership it should be a rewarding year. Ray Colvin will take charge of the Twos again & I'm sure he is looking forward to having a bit more depth in the club this year. while Pat Byrne has been appointed coach of the 17s. The netballers have had a "VERY BIG"' pre-season under the guidance of coach Michelle Byrne. Having watched the girls train since pre xmas it was commented by more than one of the boys that they were glad they were playing footy & not netball as they would not have made it through training. The girls will again field 5 teams as well as the Net Set Go program this year well done girls & good luck lur the year ahead. Congratulations to Rosie Eldershaw and Alex Gregurke being named as coaches of the juniors and C grade teams. The A grade side have lost a couple to retirement from last year's PREMIERSHIP side but have covered well with some very handy pickups. Today we travel to Leeton to take on the Crows in

what should be a great first up test in both footy &

netball. After the game all are welcome to head back to the Riverina Hotel for a beer & parmy.

McDonald's, Griffith City Cinemas, The Athlete's Foot & Gannons Butchery have returned as game day sponsors with the introduction of the mug for A & B grade.

GANMAIN-GRONG GRONG-MATONG LIONS

W ELL it certainly hasn't taken long for the Football & Netball seasons to roll around again, the 201 1 season is here and it is looking like it will be another great year of football and netball, This year we have new coaches in all three grades of football. Mitch Carroll is our new seniors coach with Clint Taylor as assistant coach, we wish both Mitch and Clint all the best for the 20 11 season. Scott "Ablett" Hamblin has taken on the j ob as reserves coach. and I'm sure all the years of football experience that Ablett has will be very beneficial to the young reserve grade side. The under 17s will have co coaches in Luke Walsh & Matt Rav.:i this year. it's great to see first grade player's taking on these roles and helping with the development of the younger player's within our club. The club would like to welcome Henry Widdill. Tom Heggarton & Luke Ayling to the club along with former players Jarrod Conway. Nick Carroll. Justin Evans. Drew Woods & Drew Symons who are returning to tl1e Lion's Den. On the departing side, Aaron Clayden. Marc Kelly. Sam Milne, Ben Walsh. Wes Kile_y. Mitch Fennessy, &

Jake Noble have moved on & wish them all the best at their new clubs. The football executive has not changed this year. Phil Hatty will continue as president. Jack Cedland as secretary & Mick Quinn as our treasurer. The club would like to thank all the workers over the summer who have contributed to the scoreboard being updated & the building of the children's playground. also a big thank you to a ll the farmer's for the harvesting of the club's crop. Our netball executive has had some changes this year, with Emma Ash the new President for 2011 & Sue McCaig taking on both secretary & treasurers roles. On the coaching side. A grade will be coached by Jae Baker, B Grade Erina McPherson. C Grade Rachael Kember & Juniors Emma Ash & CharmainP. Kemb1~r. A very reliable source has indicated to us that young Daniel Rankin will play he's 200th game of senior football for his football career today, now most or us within the GGGM club know of Daniel's on field accomplishes while he has played with us in the RFL. but not too many would know of he's achievements prior to llis time here at the Lions.

COOLAMON HOPPERS

WELCOME Hopper fans to another year of footy and netball. The off season has been busy with further ground improvements and some new players to welcome. Our new recruits include Dom Nash and Ben Cadzow from Queensland, Callum Litchfield from a year off. and Haydn Mc l achlan from North Wagga. There are also plenty of players returning to Kindra Park from other clubs including James McKenzie. Luke Maloney. Matt Bradley and Mitch Stevenson. With a raft of promising juniors push ing up, the prospect o f heading deep into the finals action is a reasonable expectation. The One's will be again coached by Easy, with Fang Bartholomew in charge of the twos, and Cricket Hard putting the polish on the 1 7s. Not sure who is coaching ttle A grade netballers. but The Furner girls Meredith and Sonya are taking the B and C's, and Kaarin Edyvean and Teagan Leary running the Juniors. Best of luck to all the coaches this year with your respective teams. The off season also saw the passing of Coolamon·s number 1 ticket ho lder in Jack Godde, at the ripe old age of 97. Jack was a passionate supporter of the Hoppers for more years than I would care to mention, and rarely missed a game. He will be sadly missed. Our condolences are extended to the Godde family on their sad loss. The Calcutta this year will be held after the Narrandera game next week (don't ask m e why then. but it is) . Plenty of prize money on offer if you get the right performers in your team, so make sure you are there for what is a bloody good night (it was last year. from what I remember). This week the old foe - give me something good to write about next week. GO THE HOPPERS!

PLAYER PROFILE: A TIGER RETURNS

FORMER Fremantle draftee Brett Doswell is looking forward to less time on the road as he rejoins his home club Wagga Tigers this season. After four years travelling to play with Wodonga Bulldogs in the Ovens and Murray League, Doswell has decided on a popular return to Robertson Oval. The 27-year-old is Tigers' marquee signing over the off-season as he joins new coach Tom Power in trying to take the Wagga club back to the top of the Riverina Football League. Doswell will line up as part of a new look Tigers midfield when they open their season with a trip to Leeton to take on the Crows on Sunday. Doswell said the constant travel from Wodonga eventually wore thin and opened the door on a return to Tigerland. "I'm loving being back with a few of the boys.

not that I've played with a lot of them before:· Doswell said this week. "I've been living here, I work here, I'm just over travelling to Wodonga. "I wanted to come back and play with Tigers and a couple of the other boys coming back made it easier, along INith a few mates that are there~ Doswell established himself as one of elite players in the O&M in his four years with Wodonga.

The Bulldogs made the preliminary final for three consecutive years. a statistic that frustrates him. They then missed fi. nals last year before he, his close friend and coach Jarrod Twitt and several other players decided to move on. Doswell was last at Tigers back in 2006, when Tigers enjoyed their last season in the AFL Canberra competition. He has seen plenty of the country with his footy, especially after moving across the country as a 17-year-old when drafted to Fremantle. Doswell was selected with selection 63 in the 2002 National Draft and still looks back fondly on his two years with the Dockers. ··1 loved it;· Doswell said. "I had a few injuries and what not but just the experience and what I learnt while I was there was just unbelievable. "Just how hard you have to work if you want to play at that level'.' With an impressive football background behind him, Doswell's main focus now is

OLD RIVALS BACK IN BATTLE

ONE of the biggest rivalries in country football will be reignited after almost a 15-year ceasefire when Mangoplah-Cookardinia-UnitedEastlakes and Collingullie-Ashmont-Kapooka lock horns at Mangoplah Sportsground today. Bitter foes from years gone by. the Goannas and Demons will recommence hostilities and write a new chapter into an intense rivalry stretching back more than 50 years. MCUE and CAK have a rich history and played off in 10 Grand Finals from 1966 to 1988 as they emerged as the dominant clubs of the era. Following an overhaul of league structures, both clubs left the Farrer League to play in the Riverina Football League in 1995. CAK played in the RFL for three years before returning to the Farrer League at the end of 1997, which means the two proud clubs have not played each other in a premiership game in 14 years.

The tradition commenced in 1966 when Mangoplah edged past Collingullie 8.9 (57) to 4.18 (42) in the Grand Final at Yerong Creek Sportsground. The teams then played out a 13.13 (91)-all draw in the following year's Grand Final with a

replay the following week seeing Mangoplah winning the Premiership 8. 11 (59) to 7 .11 (53) in another thrilling contest. Collingullic got some revenge over Mnngoplah in 1969 when the Demons toppled the Goannas 11.11 (77) to 9.8 {62) in the Grand Final. Remarkably. the clubs played out another drawn Grand Final in 1974 before Collingullie took out the replay by 1 3 points to be crowned Premiers. The rivalry was definitely at its most intense in the 1980s with the clubs playing in four Grand Finals in seven years, between 1982 and 1988. The 1982 Grand Final was a particularly bitter pill for Mangoplah to swallow after completing the season undefeated, only to be beaten by 10 points by Collingullie in the biggest game of the season. Collingullie continued its dominance with a victory in the 1984 Grand Final before Mangoplah beat its arcn-rival in the 1985 and 1988

Grand Finals. Overall from 1966 to 1988 the two teams squared off in the big dance 10 times, with both winning four times and two of the Grand Finals ending in a draw. The on-rield battles during this period were tough and uncompromising and often included brawls and bloodshed as the riva lry built up during the years. Fast forward to today and CAK is returning to the RFL after dominating the Farrer Lec1gue in recent times with three successive Premierships while MCUE is looking to build on its Preliminary Final finish last season. Given the history between tile two clubs, there is little doubt the rivalry will continue where ii left off in a dream start to the new season today. After more than a decade of separation MCUE and CAK will both be keen to reassert their authorily in one uf football's richest rivalries.

RIVERINA UMPIRES ASSOCIATION

Welcome to the 2011 footy season. Just like the clubs, the Riverina Umpires Association has been active in the off season, trying to recruit people to umpire, as well as training and preparing for the season ahead. In 2011, the R.U.A will be led once again by Rob Wilson as R-"esident, Peter Hughes as Director or Umpiring, and Greg Walsh as head coach. The R. U.A. would like to wish all clubs the very best for the upcoming Riverina Football League season, and also welcome Collingullie into the competition. In the off season, we have lost the Moore family (relocated to Townsville with Army) and this has depleted not only our stocks of field umpires with Cameron, but all of the Moore kids who ran the boundary. So we were certainly very sorry to see them go. Also, the Defence force has moved one of our promising umpires in Tony Marinac to Queensland.

Anyone wishing to take up umpiring, please come to training on Tuesday or Thursday nights at Maher Oval from 6pm. If you'd like to find out more, head to our website www.rua.org.au Supporters should be aware of which rule changes have been adopted by the AFL Riverina for their competitions this year. Those rule changes relate to the advantage rule, rough conduct and deliberate out of bounds. Please note that the AFL Riverina HAS NOT adopted the new interchange/substitute rule. In relation to rough conduct and deliberate out of bounds, the changes are more in the definition of the lav.: however. the biggest change has occurred with the advantage rule, and the onus is now on the player, not the umpire, to decide is there is an advantage. The law as is has been supplied to the Umpires from the AFL Umpiring Department is as follows.

'SANDMAN'S' RECORD LEGACY

LONG-serving Riverina Australian football identity David "Sandman" Oehm has decided to stand down from his duties after 32 years of service to the sport. Oehm has resigned from his position as editor of the AFL Riverina Record following nine years in the role and plans to take a break from football. The "footy record" has become a popular publication since its inception and Oehm has built the record to a stage where a minimum of 1000 copies are printed each week. AFL Riverina has since announced a review of the publication, including layout. content and sponsorship arrangements. Oehm's contribution was recognised at a delegates meeting this week and he has also had the Farrer League under 17 medal named in his honour. Oehm said there were many parts of his role that he would miss. "I'll miss the camara-derie," Oehm said yesterday. "I'll miss the radio part of it. too. "It's just time at this stage to stand back and give someone else a go at it." Oehm served as secretary of The RockYerong Creek for 23 years before stepping into the role of publicity officer for the old Murrumbidgee Valley Australian Football Association (MVAFA). He was publicity officer from 2002 up until last season. Oehm was also team manager of NSW under Greg Leach for two years and managed the Farrer League representa-

tive team for a period of 20 years. A diehard Collingwood supporter. Oehm is looking forward to time away from football. "It will give me a bit of time to concentrate on my lawn bowls and watching the mighty Pies," Oehm said. "I might still go to the odd game. I wish the board all the best. I was very set in my ways but with new people coming through, it's time to give them a go at it." Oehm thanked Oxford Printery for all their help in producing the record over the years.
