THE SOLID STATE PERFORMANCE INDICATOR

This electronic air cleaner is equippedwith a special solid state circuit thatoperates the optional W8600E SolidState Performance Indicator (seephoto). The W8600E Indicator must beordered separately.

The W8600E Indicator is designed tomount next to your thermostat, or in anyconvenient visible area (such as a utilityroom) where it can be seen as itmonitors the air cleaner's performance.

The three light-emitting diodes (LEDs)on the W8600E are labeled ON, WASHand CHECK.

• The ON LED is lit during normal air cleaning operation. Thesystem fan is also on when the air cleaner is running.

• If excessive dirt has accumulated on the air cleaner cell(s),the WASH LED will light to alert you that a cell and prefilterwash is past due.

• Extreme dirt loading (beyond that required to activate theWASH LED), electronic malfunction, or other equipmentproblems will cause the CHECK LED to light.

You may hear a snapping (electrical arcing)sound occasionally as the air cleaner operates. This usually is caused by a larger dust particlecausing a high voltage discharge. The snappingsound means that your air cleaner is working as itshould. To hear the snapping sound, momentarilypress the test button near the bottom of the door.Use the test button any time you want to proveair cleaner operation.

If your air cleaner is equipped with a wall-mounted W8600E Solid State PerformanceIndicator (see page 2), the ON LED will be onwhenever the air cleaner is in operation. Ofcourse, the system fan will also be running.

Set the ON-OFF switch in the power box to ON.The air cleaner will now operate whenever yourfurnace/air conditioning system fan operates. Formaximum air cleaning benefit and cleaner airconditioner coils, leave the air cleaner switch ONat all times and the fan switch on your thermostatON. Of course, continuous fan operation will addto your electric bill each month.

When the fan and air cleaner come on, the neonlight in the ON-OFF switch lights.

OPERATING YOUR ELECTRONIC AIR CLEANER

When the fan and air cleaner stops, the neonlight goes out, and the ON LED on the W8600EIndicator also goes out. The air cleaner is off untilthe heating or air conditioning and fan start again.

If you don’t want the air cleaner to run, set theON-OFF switch to OFF to turn off the air cleaner.Your furnace and air conditioner will still operatenormally but without the added benefit of aircleaning. Normally, this switch should be ON atall times.

For greatest efficiency, the air cleaner shouldrun all the time. To do this, set the fan switch onyour thermostat to ON, and make sure the aircleaner is switched ON. The fan and air cleanerwill run even when the furnace or air conditioneris off.

NOTE: A manual fan switch may be built intothe furnace or furnace fan controller.

The air cleaner uses less power than a 40 wattlight bulb (two-cell model—33 watts; single cellmodel—22 watts), and the cost of running thesystem fan is also quite low. The small addedcost is more than offset by the added benefits offull time air cleaning and full time air circulation. Some people feel that room temperatures staymore even when the fan is always on.

Even if your thermostat doesn’t have a fan ONposition, you can obtain maximum available aircleaning benefit by making sure the air cleaneris always switched ON so it operates wheneverthe furnace or air conditioner is on.

Although the air cleaner is designed to beefficient over a wide range of cell dirt loadingconditions, regular cleaning is your bestassurance of consistent performance. Also, avery dirty cell and prefilter reduces air flow and,in turn, this reduces the efficiency of the furnaceor air conditioner. The cell wash reminderschedule should be used to maintain a regularwash schedule.

An activated carbon (charcoal) filter is some-times installed downstream of the air cleaner tohelp control odors. This filter should be changedat least annually, or as recommended by thefilter manufacturer.

If your system includes an atomizing humidifier, you may want to install a standard furnace filterbetween the humidifier and the air cleaner. Thisfilter would keep the humidifier spray mineraldeposits from collecting on the air cleaner. Thisfilter should be checked regularly and changedwhen it shows signs of mineral or dirt buildup. Ifyou do not install a filter, you will probably needto wash the cell(s) and prefilter(s) more often toremove the mineral buildup.

If an ultrasonic room humidifier is used often, especially when filled with tap (undistilled)water, the cell(s) and prefilter(s) will requiremore frequent washing. A white residue willaccumulate on the cell(s) from the minerals inthe water. This residue may also contribute to"white dust" (see p. 18).

Handle the cell(s) carefully or wear protectivegloves to avoid cuts from the sharp metaledges.

To ensure optimum performance from the aircleaner, the cell(s) and prefilter(s) must becleaned regularly—every one to six months.Washing frequency will vary depending on thenumber of family members, pets, activities(such as cooking or woodworking) and smokinghabits. Use the wash reminder schedulemounted on top of the air cleaner or furnace tohelp establish and maintain a regular cleaningschedule.

If your air cleaner has a W8600E Indicator (shown on page 2), theWASH LED will light to remind you that a cell and prefilter washing ispast due. When the WASH LED comes on, it means that the cell(s) areloaded with dirt to the point that air cleaning efficiency is diminished. You should plan to wash the cell(s) and prefilter(s) as soon as possible. But by using the wash reminder schedule, a washing schedule can beestablished that keeps the cell(s) clean enough so the WASH LED doesnot come on.

Page 10: 69-0376 - F50E ELECTRONIC AIR CLEANER€¦ · 1 69-0376—4 page the solid state performance indicator 2 operating your electronic air cleaner 3 getting the most from your electronic

If you find that the WASH LED is coming on more frequently than theestablished schedule on the wash reminder schedule, you may have abuildup of residue on the ionizer wires. If the collector plates on thecell(s) look clean, you can try wiping the ionizer wires with a clean clothinstead of washing the entire cell.

You might also consider whether some activity in your home haschanged, causing the cell(s) to become dirty faster. Have the windowsbeen open more often? Has someone been smoking more often? Hassomeone taken up woodworking or some other hobby that createsdust?

NOTE: You may let the heating or air conditioning system operatenormally while the cell(s) are being washed. Simply turn off the aircleaner switch.

The prefilter(s) should be vacuumed, brushed, sprayed with a garden hose, or washed at thesame time as the electronic cell(s).

CAUTIONBurn hazard.Can cause personal injury.

Allow the cell(s) to cool completely in thedishwasher at the end of the wash cycle orwear protective gloves to avoid burns. Hotwater may accumulate in the tubes supportingthe collector plates. Tip the cell(s) so thesetubes drain.

IMPORTANT• Check your dishwasher owner’s manual. Some manufacturers do not

recommend washing electronic cell(s) in their dishwashers.• If the dishwasher has upper and lower arms, position the cell(s)

carefully to allow good water circulation.• Use care to avoid damaging the cell(s) when placing them in the

dishwasher. Broken ionizer wires or bent collector plates are notcovered under the warranty.

• Very dirty cell(s), especially from tobacco or cooking smoke, maydiscolor the plastic parts and the lining of some dishwashers. Thisdiscoloration is not harmful. To minimize it, wash the cell(s) morefrequently or try a different brand of detergent.

• Do not allow the dishwasher to run through the dry cycle. Thiswill “bake on” any contaminants not removed during the wash cycleand reduce air cleaner efficiency.

STEP 1Put the cell(s) on the lower rack of the dishwasher with the airflow arrowpointing up. It may be necessary to remove the upper rack. Don’t blockwater flow to the upper arm, if provided on your dishwasher. If you arewashing the prefilter(s) with the cell(s), place them where they won’tblock the water flow to the electronic cell(s).

HINT: Lay a few large water tumblers between the “spikes” on the lowerrack, and rest the cell(s) on them so the “spikes” don’t damage thealuminum collector blades.

STEP 2Using the detergent that works best for normal dishwashing, allow thedishwasher to run through the complete wash and rinse cycle. Do notuse the dry cycle. To avoid burns, let the cell(s) cool completely beforeremoving, or wear protective gloves when removing the cell(s). Remem-ber that water may be trapped inside the cell(s) plates. Tip the cell(s) todrain.

STEP 3Wipe the ionizer wires and red contact board on end of cell with a cleancloth.

STEP 4Inspect the dishwasher. You may wish to rerun the wash and/or rinsecycle with the dishwasher empty if you see dirt or residue from washingthe cell(s). If dirt or residue seems excessive, wash the cell(s) moreoften or try a different detergent.

Washing thecell(s) in a tub

NOTE: Always wash the cell(s) first, then the prefilter(s) to keep heavylint on the prefilter from getting caught in the cell(s).

STEP 1Use a large enough container such as a laundry tub or trash container,to hold one or both cell(s).

NOTE: Sharp corners on the cell(s) can scratch the surface of abathtub.

STEP 2Dissolve about 3/4 cup of automatic dishwasher detergent per cell inenough hot water to cover the cell(s). If the detergent doesn’t dissolvereadily, or forms a scum on the water, try another brand, or use sof-tened water.

STEP 3After the detergent is completely dissolved, place the cell(s) in thecontainer and let it soak for 15 to 20 minutes. Agitate cells up and downa few times and remove.

STEP 4Next, wash the prefilter(s) the same way. Empty and rinse the washcontainer.

STEP 5Rinse the cell(s) and prefilter(s) with a hard spray of very hot water;rinse the tub clean, then fill the tub with clean hot water and soak for 5to 15 minutes. Rinse until the water draining from the cell(s) andprefilter(s) no longer feels slippery.

STEP 6Wipe the ionizer wires and red contact board on the end of the cell witha clean cloth.

CAUTIONHazardous chemical.Can cause personal injury.

• Do not splash the detergent solution in eyes.Wear rubber gloves to avoid prolonged de-tergent contact with skin.

• Keep detergent and solution out of reach ofchildren.

The particles removed by the electronic aircleaner tend to be very small—less than 10microns. But what is a 10 micron particle? Theeye of an average size sewing needle is about750 microns across, and the dot in the i in theword micron is about 400 microns. Generally, particles smaller than 10 microns can be seenonly with a microscope, except in very largeconcentrations, such as a puff of smoke. Yourelectronic air cleaner can remove even smallerparticles that can be seen only with an electronmicroscope.

Although particles one micron and smaller makeup only about 20 percent of the total weight ofparticles in unfiltered air, they account for morethan 99 percent of the number of particles.

Because they are so tiny, these particles remainsuspended in the air unless they collide with asolid surface. Then they attach by molecularadhesion and stick like glue, staining walls andfurniture and coating your air conditioning coils. And some of these particles can cause allergicreactions or simply make the environment lesspleasant.

First, large particles (lint, hair) are caught by theprefilter(s). As the dirty air passes through theintense high voltage electric field surroundingthe ionizer wires, all particles, even the smallestare given an electric charge. The air passes intothe collector where the alternate parallel plateshave positive and negative charges, creating auniform electrostatic field. Since oppositesattract, the charged particles stick to thecollector plates, having an opposite electriccharge. Consequently, the air leaving the aircleaner contains very few particles.

How the electronicair cleaner works

15 69-0376—4

Each time the air circulates through the heating/air conditioning system and air cleaner, moreparticles are removed. These particles aregenerated by normal household activities, andalso enter the house from the outside. That’swhy we recommend that you use the air cleaneras much as possible.

The electronic aircleaner vs. thestandardfurnace filter

Use a carbonfilter to removeodors

Air ionizers have been marketed with claimsabout purifying the air and promising medicalbenefits. It should be noted that supportingtests, if available, are controversial and incom-plete.

Air ionizers can generate a bit of ozone, and ofcourse some ions (air molecules with an electriccharge). This is what your electronic air cleanerionizer does, but with greater intensity. How-ever, air ionizers do not have good collectors, ifany. With air ionizers, the charged dirt particlesare "collected" by walls, floor and furniture, requiring frequent cleaning of the entire buildingto remove the effects of collected contamina-tion. By comparison, an electronic air cleanerdeposits contamination on the cell(s) andprefilter(s) for easy cleaning.

The electronicair cleanervs. the airionizer

The regular furnace filter collects mainly large, visible particles that reach the filter. Its mainpurpose is to protect the furnace and airconditioner blower. The electronic air cleanercollects these large particles, plus many of thesmaller, mostly invisible particles. Its purpose isto reduce indoor air pollution and to protect theblower, air conditioning coils and heat ex-changer.

Odors are gases, not particles. They cannot beremoved by the air cleaner or by any other filterdesigned to remove particles. However, somegases can be trapped by an activated carbonfilter or diluted with outdoor air. If odors are aconcern, talk to your heating and air condition-ing dealer about installing a carbon filterdownstream of the air cleaner or providing anoutdoor air inlet.

69-0376—4 16

Page 19: 69-0376 - F50E ELECTRONIC AIR CLEANER€¦ · 1 69-0376—4 page the solid state performance indicator 2 operating your electronic air cleaner 3 getting the most from your electronic

Ozone and theelectronicair cleaner

17 69-0376—4

Electronic air cleaners generate a very smallamount of ozone, about 0.005 to 0.010 partsper million (ppm). The amount is highest whenthe air cleaner is new.

The average person can detect the odor ofozone in concentrations as low as 0.003 to0.010 ppm. The U.S. Food and Drug Admini-stration and Health and Welfare Canadarecommend that indoor ozone concentrationshould not exceed 0.050 ppm. As a compari-son, the outdoor ozone level in major cities issometimes higher than 0.100 ppm.

If desired, the ozone generated by the aircleaner can be reduced by asking your dealerto:• Install an activated carbon filter downstream

of the air cleaner, or• Adjust the air cleaner power supply to

reduce ozone production. This adjustmentwill reduce ozone production about 20 to 25percent, but will also reduce air cleaningefficiency about 7 to 10 percent.

White dust is made up of particles that settle outof the air before they get to the return air duct. You can help prevent this “white dust” fromsettling by running your fan constantly. Also,

• Be sure the return registers are not blockedwith furniture.

• Be sure the discharge ducts are clean (bestdone before installing the air cleaner).

• Be sure your clothes dryer is vented to theoutside and is not plugged.

• If you have new rugs or drapes or newwoolen blankets, be aware that the lint fromthese items reduces with age.

• In new or remodeled homes, plaster dust orpaint pigment may contribute to “white dust”,but reduces with time.

• Use of a humidifier may contribute to "whitedust", especially if filled with undistilledwater.
