Dear Parish Family,
We continue our series of reflections on The Power of
Vision this weekend. If you are away, or want to listen again, know that we are now posting at least one weekend homily
on our new podcast which you can reach via our parish homepage,
our parish app, or our parish Facebook page. This is a great way to share the news with others, listen again for something you may have
missed, or hear one of the homilies from another of the weekend
masses, as each preacher will certainly have a slightly different ap-
proach on the same theme.
This weekend, we again concentrate on our vision to form disciples,
but how we can do that in developing a personal interior life, spe-
cifically through maturing in faith and growing in holiness. You may
recall the surveys everyone was invited to fill out as part of the arch-diocesan planning process. I know I’ve mentioned how often re-
spondents from St. John’s mentioned a desire to learn to pray, and
we’ve spoken about that at length. This journey to become a com-munity that brings people to Christ, forms disciples, and send them
forth to transform the world involves a commitment by each of us to
continually grow in faith and prayer. The first disciples literally fol-lowed Jesus around for three years, listening to his teaching, wit-
nessing his ministry, and asking questions (often floundering along
the way!). After the resurrection, empowered by the Holy Spirit, they continued doing what Jesus had done and that’s why we are
here today: disciples continuing to make disciples!
Sadly, most Catholics ended their formation when they prepared for
the last sacrament they received: sometimes Matrimony, but more often Confirmation and frequently First Holy Communion! Imagine
trying to be good at anything with an education that ended at age
14 or 8! In any other area of life we’d be severely limited. Anything that we take seriously - and one would hope we would take our rela-
tionship with God seriously - demands time dedicated to ongoing
study and, in this case, prayer. Our challenge is that we have so
many Catholics who have received their sacraments, but are poorly catechized and so often not yet evangelized!
Consider ways you can “take the next step” (as we did in our finan-
cial stewardship in the fall) in your spiritual life. Connect with some
form of ongoing faith formation. You can find a number of options in this bulletin! Don’t forget our parish subscription to FORMED. Go to

array of Bible studies, movies, books, and other formation materials. Maybe even start your own small group in your home! I highly rec-
ommend The Wild Goose: Rediscovering a Deeper Relationship

We welcomed guests to our first Alpha session this past Tuesday.
I ask that you hold in your prayers all those (including the team
members) who are participating, that this may be a time where
questions are answered and many come to discover the love that
God has for them.
Next weekend we launch Catholic Schools Week with students
from our school speaking at each Mass. Not long ago I had a
member of our faculty approach me, almost in tears, sharing how
much it meant to her to be part of our school. She said this was in
part because of how strong the Catholic identity is, and how she
is so supported and enriched by frequent prayer that takes place.
You don’t know how that touched me! I encourage you to stop by
for the Open House on Wednesday, Feb.1 from 9 AM - 1 PM or
7—8 PM to see for yourself!
Congratulations and God’s blessings to Bishop Mark Brennan and
Bishop Adam Parker who were ordained on Thursday at the Ca-
thedral! It looks like Bishop Parker will be celebrating the Sacra-
ment of Confirmation with us on Sunday, May 21 at the 12:30 &
5:15 PM Masses. We look forward to welcoming him!

Blanket Drive The Sisterhood of the Blessed Mother is holding
their 2nd annual blanket drive. We need 81 blankets to donate
to homeless women and children. Send your blessing of
warmth – new blankets of any size are accepted! Toiletries are
also needed. Donations are due by Sunday, Feb. 5. Donations
may be placed in the baskets in the Gathering Space. Ques-

Fr. James Boric has been appointed Rector of the Baltimore Basilica, effective Feb. 20. Plan
now to “pray him off” by joining him in a Fare-
well Mass of Thanksgiving on Sunday, Feb. 19 at 10:45 AM, followed by a reception in the
Auditorium. In a short time, Fr. James has had
a great impact on our parish, for which we
thank God. We are putting together a parish gift to present to

Reconciliation: Confessions are heard Saturdays 4-5 PM and First Fridays 9-9:30 AM and 7-7:30 PM (as well as special times during Advent and Lent) and by ap-pointment with a priest.
Baptisms: Parents who wish to have their children baptized should contact Jen Mayer, Coordinator of Adult Faith Formation, to begin the baptism prepara-tion process. Baptisms are celebrated at Mass and on Saturdays at noon. Please note that godparents must be at least 16 years old and confirmed, practicing Catholics. There must be at least one Catholic god-parent, but other baptized Christians may serve as Christian witnesses.
Marriage: Couples planning to marry must contact one of the priests or deacons at least 6 months prior to the tentative date of marriage. Participation in a marriage preparation program is required.
Ministry to the Sick: The Sacrament of Anointing should be administered at the beginning of a serious illness. Please notify the parish office when a parish-ioner is hospitalized. If you are unable to attend Mass and wish to receive Holy Communion, please contact the Parish Office.
Confirmation: Youth in 9th grade and above are eli-gible to prepare for the reception of the sacrament. Adults who have not been confirmed are invited to contact Jen Mayer, Coordinator of Adult Faith For-mation, to make arrangements for the sacrament.

Catholicism – The Pivotal Players Begins soon. Bishop Robert Bar-ron (Host of the Catholicism Series) continues his journey around
the world to explore a handful of saints, artists, mystics, and schol-
ars who not only shaped the life of the Church, but changed the

tures six people who responded to the grace of God to make a

Beer and Barron Our Beer and Barron group allows men to infor-
mally hang out with other Catholic men, drink beer (or other bev-
erage of your choice), eat tasty snacks, watch a video by the
very popular Bishop Barron, and talk about things that are im-
portant to Catholic men. The group meets every other Thursday
night from 7:30 – 9:30 PM in our homes, alternating between St.
Andrew by the Bay and St. John the Evangelist parishioners. Our

Resurrection as found in the supplement of the third part of the

MidSSS is the Middle School Social and Service program gener-

Respect Life National Prayer Vigil for Life Mass The Respect Life Committee will be organizing a carpool to the
National Prayer Vigil for Life Mass on Thursday, Jan. 26 at 5:30 PM in Washington, DC. We will
leave St. John’s parking lot at 3 PM and will return
after the Mass has ended. All individuals/groups

March for Life Bus The Knights of Columbus and the Respect Life
Committee will be providing a bus to the March for Life in Wash-
ington, DC on Friday, Jan. 27. We will leave St. John’s parking lot
at 11 AM and will return between 4:30 – 5 PM. Children under the
age of 18 must be accompanied by one of their parents or a
STAND trained adult with a permission slip. Every individual/group

A parishioner, who knew young Gretch-
en needed help, gave her St. John’s
phone number. Gretchen is a vibrant,
determined young woman who chose
life for her child. Unfortunately, she finds
herself alone - a single, unemployed
mother of a three-week old baby, on the
verge of eviction. She had been self-
sufficient with a job, and a loving father.
Her father died, her boyfriend did not
want to be a father, and she lost her job
because of her pregnancy. Through the
generosity of a neighbor, the St. John’s
family, and Mary’s Center, she is in her
apartment until February and has neces-
sities for her child. She is applying for ben-
efits and child support through Social Ser-
vices and starts a new job in two weeks.
She has many challenges ahead, but she
knows she has friends here at St. John’s
praying for her. Your donation, whatever
you can give, allows us to continue to
help people like Gretchen and her beau-
tiful son.
Poor Box As you place your donation in the Poor Box this weekend, say a special
prayer for our families, and especially
Gretchen, that they may feel God’s love
for them.
Pantry We especially need brown paper
grocery bags, canned fruit, dish deter-
gent, jelly, ketchup, mustard and spa-
ghetti sauce.
Clothing, in good condition, is accepted in the receptacle located in the church
parking lot. All clothes are distributed in
Baltimore.

There are several “special projects” un-
derway in the parish that we are look-
ing for sponsors to underwrite. If you are
interested in assisting any of these pro-
jects, in part or in full, please contact Fr.

velope indicating which project it is for.
Some needs that we have currently
include: • Completion of the Oratory by crafting a tabernacle
that will house the monstrance for Eucharistic Adora-
tion at designated times. Estimated cost: $10,000 • We hope to renovate the Gathering Space to allow
for a dual-purpose meeting room and child care area
that families could use at Masses and other special
events. Estimated cost: $75,000. • Renovation of our confessionals to allow for face-to-
face celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation,
while preserving anonymity for those who wish it and
soundproofing all confessionals for added privacy.
Cost estimates being solicited. • We also know of someone in need of a vehicle for
family use to be able to travel to and from work who is
supporting a family with several small children and ex-
pecting a child. Please contact Al Jones at the Parish
Office.
All of the above are non-budgeted items that we believe
will enhance our ability to be the praying, evangelizing,
and welcoming community that we aspire to be.
Inclement Weather Policy We
will follow the direction of Anne
Arundel County Public Schools
to the following extent:
Schools Delayed: 8:30 Mass goes on as scheduled.
Schools Closed: 8:30 AM Mass is cancelled. (The priests will celebrate the scheduled intention at the next
scheduled Mass.) Decisions regarding evening activities
will be made no later than 5 PM. Check the website, as well as the parish and school Facebook pages. The par-
ish Facebook feed is available on the homepage. Indi-vidual groups will contact members via phone and/or
email.
Early Dismissal: All evening activities are cancelled.
On weekends: In an active snow event, Saturday morn-
ing Mass and activities will be cancelled, with a mes-
sage posted as above. Any alterations to the weekend
Mass schedule will be announced as above. However,
please exercise due discretion in making the decision to
travel in hazardous weather/driving conditions. We want
you to be safe and able to worship with us the following
week!
