Order of Operations Computer Tutorial
INTRODUCTION
If you are asked to simplify the expression
"4 + 2×3", the question that naturally arises is "Which way do I do this? Because there are two options!":
Choice 1: Just do it straight across…WRONG!!!
Choice 2: Follow Order of operations YES!!!!
IT MEANS THE ORDER IN WHICH YOU DO EACH OPERATION (+, -, ÷, • ) IN AN
EXPRESSION.
THE ORDER IS REMEMBERED BY PLEASE EXCUSE MY DEAR AUNT SALLY
Um…What’s that?

Parenthesis
Exponents
Multiplication Division (first come first serve)
Addition Subtraction (first come first serve)
Let’s Evaluate the Expression Parenthesis? ……………………………………………………………………………………………………
Exponents? …………………………………………………………………………………………………….. Multiplication /Division? Yes! Okay, solve those from left to right (first come first serve)……………………..................
Addition /Subtraction? Yes! Okay, solve those from left to right (first come first erve)…………………………………...
Now, if you did it straight across like it is written it would be 4 + 2 = 6 x 3= 18……But the Answer is NOT 18!!!!
The answer is 10!Order Matters!!!!
4 + 2 x 3

Let’s Evaluate the Expression 2 25 – (27-11) + 18 ÷ 2
2 25 – 16 + 18 ÷ 2
2 32 – 16 + 18 ÷ 2

When you evaluate
expressions, it is very important to set your paper up for the order of
operations. Sometimes
nothing is written in a space,
sometimes many things are written
in a space.
Set up your paper like this with the Green PEMDAS. Then write the
example on your paper as you click through each step to practice how it works. Each click does a new step.
3 + (8 x 4) + 30 ÷ 5 x 7 - 9 3 + 32 + 30 ÷ 5 x 7 - 9
3 + 32 + 6 x 7 - 9 3 + 32 + 42 - 9
77 - 9
