Virginia F. Beckwith, 90, passed away Oct. 10, 2015 in Mesa. She was born on May 5, 1925 near Lincoln, Iowa, the daughter of Albert and Frieda Lorenz. She married Donald E. Beckwith April 2, 1945 in Alameda, CA. He preceded her in death in 1996. She was employed at Norwesco in Grundy Center, IA retiring in 1987. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four sisters, two brothers and one great-granddaughter. She is survived by two brothers, Albert of Grundy Center, IA and Eldon of Cedar Falls IA; three daughters, Nancy

Virginia F. BeckwithKoch and Sharon (Jim) McGrane of Kearny and Carla (Mark) Nash of Cedar Falls, IA; son, Donald Beckwith Jr (Roberta) of Council Bluffs, IA; nine grandchildren, 19

great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. Interment at the Washington Township Cemetery in Morrison, IA will be a private family service at a later date.

Jesus L. “Chuy” Yañez, 83 of Superior, AZ passed on Oct. 14, 2015 at Banner Goldfield Hospital, Apache Junction, Arizona. He was born on Feb. 20, 1932 in Marfa, Texas. Chuy was married to Trini for 62 years and has 4 daughters. He was a Korean War Veteran serving in the U.S. Army as a specialist fourth class, 82nd Airborne. Upon his return he worked at Kennecott Copper Company as a boiler maker, pipe fitter, welder for 36 years, he retired in 1984. He then continued his employment with the Superior School District as a

He was very active in his church where he had served as a deacon for a number of years. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2015 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Superior, with a viewing at 8 a.m., Rosary at 8:30 a.m., Mass at 9 a.m. with interment to follow at the Fairview Cemetery, Superior, AZ. OBITUARY

Albert Garcia Rojas entered into rest on Oct. 16, 2015. Albert was born in Douglas, Arizona, April 11, 1945 to Mike C. Rojas and Alice Rojas. Albert G. Rojas was an employee of ASARCO Copper Mine for 35 years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Albert is preceded in death by his son, Albert Jr. Rojas; daughter, Sandra Rojas; sister, Corina Lopez; and sister-in-law, Lina Ortega. He is survived by his wife, Hercilia Rojas; sisters, Connie R. Bertoldo of Globe, AZ, Angelina Hernandez of Lordsburg, NM, Irene

Vargas of Gilbert, AZ and Angelina Gonzales of Lordsburg, NM; brothers, Charlie (Martina) Rojas of Thatcher, AZ and Mike Jr. Rojas of Lordsburg, NM. Services for Mr. Rojas will be held Monday, Oct. 26, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hayden with Rosary at 9:30 a.m. and a Memorial Mass at 10 a.m. Internment will follow at Mt. Albert Garcia Rojas

The recall of members of the governing board of the community college centers on their fiscal irresponsibility and their violation of the Open

Meeting Law. The recall has nothing to do with the Aravaipa campus nor any intent to close the campus.

Pinal County has not recovered from the recession, people are still being laid off, and tax payers have already been burden by high tax rates. Oblivious to these economic conditions the CAC governing board voted on May 19 to increase taxes by 45% on that portion directed to the college. Immediately a committee, Citizens for Fair Taxation (CFFT) , filed recall petitions. The filing of the recall petition and community backlash to this exorbitant,unnecessary tax increase of 45% resulted in the CAC Board holding a special meeting on June 9 during which they rescinded the 45% increase and literally pulled the number 20% out of a hat.The signs,with the crossed out 45% increase and a 20% percent figure added, is a reminder to all taxpayers of what occurred and what will happen in the future if recall is not successful. The initial 45% increase was the largest increase ever passed by a community college in Arizona. The Vice President of the College admitted that the college did not need this large increase for 2015-2016. He stated that not knowing

what the future would bring the administration wanted the money in case.The CFFT has a different philosophy regarding taxes. The worker keeps his money in the event he needs it in the future. Pinal County supported CAC in 2008 by passing a $99 million bond for the repair of the Signal Peak Campus and to expand. The board was fiscally irresponsible with this $99 million. During the recession CAC purchased 203 acres in San Tan Valley from a party who 10 months previously had paid $23,000 an acre for the land. CAC paid $43.000 an acre. An appraisal was not done. According to the Vice President of the College an appraisal was not required. This fiscally irresponsible purchase for $8.3 million made headlines in the Wall Street Journal. When the San Tan Valley Campus was ready to open, CAC requested a 35% increase in taxes because “they forgot to budget for the maintenance and operation of the new STV campus.” Because of community backlash CAC

From Pre-School to Community College, our state legislature has done everything they can to cut funding so they can proclaim that they do not raise taxes. Unfortunately, that leaves the burden upon county taxpayers to make up this shortfall with higher taxes. I’m like many of you, I don’t want to see my taxes raised. But I do not want to see our future citizens harmed by legislators who are penny wise and pound foolish. Our own Central Arizona College has been put in a very precarious situation through these funding cuts. A group of citizens now wants to help the legislature cut funding to our college-they want to recall two of the Board of Directors so they can place their people in these

seats. The effects would be harmful for the students in the eastern part of Pinal County. If CAC were to cut any more from their budget-the Aravaipa Campus would be the first to close. Many students from Oracle to Superior would be left without a nearby school to attend. Not everyone can afford to stay in the dorms at Signal Peak. Since it has been stated and made clear by myself and other tribal members of the San Carlos Apache Tribe that Oak Flat has no religious or cultural significance to our tribe, nor does it threaten our livelihood, it’s now the time to continue on with what will ultimately happen with Resolution Copper. In the past couple of months, rather than listening to hearsay, I decided to seek out the answers to the questions many of us had. In taking initiative, I

found that the answers were right at my fingertips – it was as simple as attending public meetings, taking advantage of the tours being offered and communicating my concerns. Through this, it was made clear that there are strict laws and detailed regulations that the NEPA process requires and that special mining permits must be obtained. It was also made clear that as members of our community, we have a voice and an opportunity to engage with the

We should also be aware that above all, the safety and well-being of all involved (workers and communities) is the most important. It is only after these things are considered that this mining project could begin. I have to share with my community and neighbor friends that in my home it was brought up for discussion how block cave mining sounded scary and what the result of that environment might look like. I had to reassure my son and daughters that yes, with the most intelligent and sophisticated mining techniques that will be implemented it will be up to mother earth how the outcome will be. That’s why it is very important that we all come together and PRAY for a successful outcome. I remind my family and also encourage all that fear tactics that are used to prevent any project is a form of manipulating for one’s own gain. As tribal members with a strong cultural traditional core of prayer, we must stay informed and involved with Resolution Copper. Coming to the table of discussion and concerns, all based on facts promotes a unity of strength. So that all involved in the mining work force and families at home are safe. When I mention safe at home, which in itself is a handful as our communities are faced with many sensitive issues. I encourage all tribal members not to fear our Tribal Government Leaders, as they must remember that the oath they took was to serve their people, serve with facts, fairness and honesty. I continue to applaud the tribal council members who have weighed out the facts, and lead with fairness and honesty. Though a special interest group with several of our leaders and tribal members decided to travel to Washington D.C. to speak out against the project, I commend the leaders and tribal members who made the decision to stay home and continue to address the more important issues facing our community today. I extend my apologies to the mother/daughter from Washington State - who walked to support what they believed was the truth. I only wish that they were introduced to our elders who have provided truth to us. Our healings continue and our concerns and issues are still in need of being addressed. There is so much we have to deal with as a tribal community that we need to come together to combat the social ills and come together to make decisions that benefit the greater good of our community. I humble my little mind so that I along with many who gracefully accept change do not allow fear to cripple us as a community but rather allow truth to lead and guide us. Hayden, Arizona - The Hayden High School Class of 1965 celebrated its 50th Class Reunion with the Classes of the 60s on Saturday, Oct. 10, at the General Kearny Inn Pavilion. The Kearny Rotary Club provided the steak dinner and the dance music was provided by D.J. Lucky Romero. Special awards were presented to Linda Rico for First to Register and to Gracie Calderon and Terri Corrales for the Last to Register. The Hardest Person to Find was Phil Curtis, while Ann Cavannah of Durango, Co., Rodney Sedam of Mojave, CA, Diane Thomas and Dorothy Montoya from New Mexico received the Farthest Traveled to Reunion from Out of State awards. Living the Closest to the School award went to Annie Hinojos and Gerri Bracamonte. Virgie Lease, Manuel Ochoa, Anna Quesada, Rosie Ortega, Lucy Montijo, Lupe Guzman and Gloria Lopez received the Never Left Town award. First Time to Reunion from Class of 65 was Terri Corrales. Who’d a thunk it? Not me! I did not anticipate the overwhelming cooperation of the people of

Kearny with Journey for a Clean Kearny and I certainly did not anticipate the overwhelming tonnage of yard waste and throw-aways that filled all our roll-offs (both on Jamestown and at the Transfer

Our volunteers (bless them!) cleared all our streets, picked up the litter, cleaned the cemetery, and took extra time to organize all the leftovers on Jamestown. We had to make arrangements for two more containers to handle the overflow. The amount of stuff we all threw away makes me realize just how much our town has needed to be cleaned and cared for. Clearly, we got rid of years of accumulated waste. I hope that with this great leap toward cleanliness we can all move into a time of maintenance and improvement. I’m going to do my best to keep the clutter out of my front yard, care for my plants, and keep my house painted and looking sharp. Our winter residents are starting to show up. It’s good to see them again. Their arrival signals cooler weather and a busier golf course, as well as a stronger cheering section for the home games. All the churches are more active too. I’m glad we spiffed up the town before they all get here. At my most optimistic, I think we may have come closer to crossing a

line, from mere maintenance into real transformation. We have been battered by the economy. Our property values have declined along with the wages many of us draw. Our schools are smaller and riddled with economic anxiety. The town is older and smaller. Hey! Even our trees, especially the original mulberries, are old, bedraggled, and dying. But with Journey for a Clean Kearny we have cleaned the town twice this year and renewed a spirit of neighborliness. The Town Council is working to improve the town’s infrastructure, which is not an easy task. Tax revenues are down and

grant availability is increasingly scarce. Insufficient maintenance over the past 25 years is a big problem, for some things are too deteriorated to repair. Replacement is needed instead. Many things will be accomplished this year and the next, but at a tremendous cost. One sign of hope is that we have received a $35,000 federal grant to begin a planning process for the next ten years. We can move from mere maintenance into real transformation. I think that strong values are what define this community. Let’s carry these values forward and leave a legacy for generations to come.

The Hayden football team closed out its season at Superior last Friday and was shutout by the state’s third-ranked team, 53 – 0. The loss was the Lobos’ seventh consecutive loss after a season-opening win at Arete Prep. Only two seniors were on this year’s roster, leaving per-haps as many as 23 players – most of whom are freshmen and sophomores – returning next year.

The Ray football team was defeated by visiting and No. 13-ranked Chandler Prep in their season finale last Friday night, 42 – 0. The loss ends the Bearcats’ season without a playoff appearance for the first time in several years. The Cats finished the season with a record of 2 – 6 with wins against Arete Prep and rival Hayden. Six seniors depart from this year’s roster, which included a majority of underclassmen.

The Ray seventh-grade girls’ volleyball team won the CJHL Volleyball Championship two weeks ago while the eighth-grade finished as runner-up. The No. 2-seeded Lady Cats defeated No. 3-seed Hayden, 2 – 1 (25-16, 16-25,15-9), to advance to the championship match, where they took on the top-seeded Mt. Vista Lady Cougars. In the championship match, Kacy Molar was superb from the service line and had a few key serves that turned the match in the Lady Cats favor. Indigo Patterson led the Lady Cats’ charge in the second game, which the Lady Cats also won (25 – 13) and the League Championship with it. “I think (we) were stunned that we won game one,” head coach Stacy Johnson told the Copper Basin News. “That threw (Mt. Vista) off their game plan.” “I’m not sure if my young players really realize what they truly accomplished this season,” she added. “These girls worked as a team all season long and were eager to learn the game.”

The seventh-grade champions are: Chasity Kelley, Kacy Molar, Indigo Patterson, Lucinda Schneider, Chelsea Flores, Emma Stuart, and Brianna Goad. The No. 3-seeded eighth-grade Lady Cats defeated No. 6 San Manuel in the first round, 2 – 0 (25-19, 25-9). Acacia Baldenegro, Danielle Barajas, Shelby Yocum, and Emiley Rutter led the Cats to the victory. The Lady Cats took on No. 2 Globe in their next match and won, 2 – 1 (25-20, 21-25, 15-3). Yocum and Baldenegro played the net well. The victory pitted the Lady Cats versus Mt. Vista for the CJHL Championship. The Lady Cougars were outstanding at the service line and on point with kills. It turned out to be turned be the difference in the match as the Mt. Vista defeated Ray, 2 – 0 (19-25, 22-25). “We just didn’t have enough steam to break all their servers or to pop up their hits and tips,” Johnson said. “We gave it all we had.” The eighth-grade runners up are: Emiley Rutter, Emma Cude, Molli Davila, Shelby Yocum, Shaylyn Arbizo, Izzy Kimmel, Julianna Hong, Julia Lorona, Grace Rabb, Bianca Gutierrez, Danielle Barajas, Ashlin Baca, Claudia Delgado, and Acacia Baldenegro.

The administration complained about lack of state funding. CAC received $2,023,900 in state funding in 2014 and $1,903,500 in 2015. Please note that 15 administrators earn a salary between $110,000 to $200,000 plus the benefit of a cadillac health coverage. The CAC Board voted these administrators and full time instructors a 3% increase in pay when they increased your taxes. The Kiang Wang camp was located on the outskirts of Shangai. The treatment of the prisoners was as bad as Woosung. Food was scarce, medical treatment was poor, brutality by the guards continued and the prisoners were forced to work 12 hour days. Mic was lucky; during his first two years of captivity he was placed on light duty due to his battle wounds. By the summer of 1943 because of the starvation diet and increase in work hours, many of the men were living skeletons. A number were sick and the makeshift hospital manned by American doctors that had been taken prisoner was low on medicine and medical supplies. The doctors were doing surgery with razor blades and sewing up wounds with thread or fishing line. Thanks to the International Red Cross many prisoners were able to survive. The Red Cross was able to deliver food, medicine, medical supplies and warm clothing to the prisoners. The Japanese looted the supplies, although enough got through to make a difference. A Swiss representative of the International Red Cross, Edouard Egle, saw to it that the prisoners received some wooden stoves, books and vegetable seeds for the gardens prisoners had started. In early 1944, Egle personally delivered food packets, coveralls and boots to each prisoner. For many of the men the clothing he brought was their first change of clothes in two years. Kiang Wang prison was located near two airfields. American planes had begun bombing Shanghai and the airfields. Some of the guards took out their anger over the bombings in Shanghai and Japan on the prisoners. One incident involved some prisoners cheering after watching an American fighter plane shoot down a Japanese plane. Some angry guards then bayoneted three prisoners. As bombings became more frequent and the news of American bombing raids on Tokyo reached the

Mic Johnson: In the Prison Campsprison camp, morale grew for the Americans while the Japanese began to realize that the war may be lost. In May 1945 the prisoners were loaded on train box cars and transported to Fengtai a prison near Peking in China. The trip took five days. During the train ride some American prisoners successfully escaped by jumping off the train. In June, they were loaded on another train to Pusan, Korea. They would be transported by ship to a prison camp in Japan. As the war neared its end, the guards began treating the prisoners better. Mic Johnson and the Wake Island prisoners had survived 44 months of brutal captivity, starvation and disease. “We were threatened with death every day,” said Mic. Resolution Copper Core Processing Facility Tour

If you have any questions about the public meetings, we invite you to call our information line at 520.689.3409, visit our Community Information Office at 402 W, Main St. in Superior, or visit ResoltuionCopper.com.

Resolution Copper cordially invites you to a special tour providing a rare, inside view of the geological and geotechnical logging program at our Core Processing Facility. Geologists will be on hand to talk about the drilling program, answer questions and discuss how core samples support information gathering for engineering, planning and permitting.

The tour will be on Wednesday, Oct. 21 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Core Processing Facility, 2 N. Mesquite Rd., Superior 85173.

Please note, closed toed shoes are required for the tour. Light refreshments will be provided.
