CoolantisroutedromtherontcovertotheEGRcoolers,EGRvalve,
degasbottle,andthevehicleheatercore. ThehorizontalEGRcoolerreceivescoolantfrst,thenthecoolant
travelstotheverticalEGRcoolerthroughashortconnectionhose.HotcoolantexitstheverticalEGRcooleratthetopandentersintotherontcover.
AportnexttothehotEGRreturnportintherontcoverrouteshotcoolanttotheheatercoreorvehicleheating.ThecoolantthentravelstoaY-pipewhereitmeetswithdegasreturncoolantbeorebeingsentintotherontcover,justabovethemaincoolantinletromtheradiotor.
External Coolant Flow
TheEGRvalvereceivesitscoolantromapassageatthetopotheverticalEGRcooler.OncethecoolantexitstheEGRvalveitissenttothedegasbottle(thispassageisthehighestpointinthesystemandisalsothedeaerationport).
TheportdirectlybelowtheEGRvalvereturn/deaerationportonthedegasbottleisusedasaradiatorfll/overowlineconnectingwiththetopotheradiator.
Adualthermostatsytemisusedtocontroltheoworeturncoolanttotheradiator.Ithethermostatsareopen,coolantowstotheradiatortobecooled.Thebottomthermostathasabypasscircuitthatwillallowcoolanttoreturntothepumpwhenthethermostatsareclosed(speedingenginewarmup).

Coolantisdirectedoutothecrankcaseandintotheoilflterbaseattherontotheengine.
Theoilflterbaseroutesthecoolantdownintotherontotheoilcoolerthentowardtherearotheengine.
Oncethecoolanthaspassedthroughtheoilcooleritisrouteduptothetopotheoilcoolerthendirectedtowardstherontthroughaportwhereitisthenrouteddown,outothecooler,throughaportintheblock.

Cooling System Flow: EGR Coolers
Cooledcoolantowsoutothesupplyportotherontcoverwhereitisroutedtothehorizontalcoolerattheletrearsideotheengine.
Thecoolantthenexitsthehorizontalcoolerandisimmediatelyroutedintotheverticalcooler.Thecoolantthenexitstheverticalcoolerwhereitisroutedtothereturnportintherontcover.
ThereisasmallportatthetopotheverticalcoolerwherecoolantisallowedtoowtotheEGRvalve,coolthevalve,thenthecoolantisroutedtothedegasbottle.Thisportisalsousedasthedeaerationport.
CoolantowsthroughtheEGRcoolersandremovesheatromtheexhaustbeoretheexhaustarrivesattheEGRvalve.
Coolant Pump & Front Cover
Thecoolantpump,(hubandimpeller)ismountedintotherontcoverwhichisthehousingorthewaterpump.
Thecoolantpumpimpellerpullscoolantromthecenterothehousingandpushesitoutward.
Thecoolantpumphasabuiltinreservoirtocatchsmallamountsocoolantthatduringnormaloperationotheenginemayseeppasttheseal.Thiscoolantwillevaporateovertime.
Note:Thecoolantpumpimpellermaybedamagedifdroppedorhitbyahardobject.
Injector Sleeve
The6.4LPowerStrokeusesstainlesssteelinjectorsleevestosealcoolantromtheinjectorandtotranserheatromtheinjectortothecoolant.
Theinjectorsleeveisreplaceable.

Glow Plug Sleeve
Glowplugsleevesareusedtokeepcoolantromcomingindirectcontactwiththeglowplugsandtosealcoolantromthecombustionchamber.
Theglowplugsleeveisreplaceable.Seeuniqueserviceproceduresortheservicemanualormoredetails.
Degas Bottle
Thedegasbottleislocatedontheletsideotheenginecompartmentandispartotheletsidebatterytray.
OneotheportsonthebottleisattachedtotheEGRvalvecoolantline(whichissuppliedromthetopotheverticalEGRcooler).Ithisportorhoseisblocked,damagecouldoccurtotheEGRcoolersand/ortheEGRvalve.
