The Britannica Encyclopedia was first published between 1768 and 1771 in Edinburgh, Scotland

as the Encyclopdia Britannica, or, A Dictionary of Arts and Sciences, compiled upon a New Plan. It was

made and published in reaction the French Encyclopdie (1751) of Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond

d'Alembert which had been inspired by Chambers's Cyclopaedia (1728). Over the centuries, the

encyclopedia has grown to be one of the most trusted reference resources. However, within the past

fifteen years, the encyclopedia has dramatically changed. In 1999, one part of the company retained the

Britannica name and developed the print version. While the other part of the company, developed

digital versions and was named Britannica.com Inc. In March 2012, Britannica's current president, Jorge

Cauz, announced that it would not produce any new print editions of the encyclopedia. The 2010 15th

edition was the last print version to be published. As a result, the companys new focus was to develop

the online version as well as new educational tools. This renewed focus, in my opinion, has

revolutionized the encyclopedia and has made it relevant. There are three main databases that have

been developed. The first being Britannica Online Academic Edition for college students, Britannica

Online Public Edition for public library patron use, and Britannica Online School Edition for students in

    grades kindergarten through twelfth.

The SchoolEdition, which has been specifically designed for students, is divided into three

sections-elementary, middle, and high school. The part of the catalog that I chose to concentrate my

effort was the high school section.

The homepage links users to a variety of resources. The first, and probably the most important,

being the Discover Britannica! portion. Within this part of the homepage, users can have access to

finding information throughSubjects,Biographies,World Atlas,Compare Countries, andTour of the USA.

The information presented in the articles contained inSubjectsas well asBiographiesare well thought

out, concise, and easy to navigate. TheSubjectsare broken down as follows:

Perusing theWorld Atlasenables students to find information about the countries of the world with a

click of a mouse while theCompare Countriescomponent allows students to compare two countries at

the same time. TheTour of the USA permits students to view statistics and other information for each

    state in the USA.

Another interesting aspect of the homepage are the resources available in theHow Toswhich

provide students with resources on how to write book reviews, research papers, science reports, and

presentations. On This Dayprovides information about a historical event that happened on that

particular day. In this instance, information was presented about Elizabeth I of England because

    September 7 celebrates her 480th

birthday. Selected New & Revised Articlesprovides students with up

to date information about new or revised articles.

Overall, I would highly recommend this encyclopedia for any user at any age. Its visually

appealing but not overwhelming and enables users to access high quality information easily.
