DESIGN GUIDELINES FORFLEADH PROGRAMMECOVERS.
This document has beencreated for those involved in the creation of Fleadhprogramme covers. It shouldbe used as a guide andadhered to for all projects.
The guidelines are a necessarypart of our interest inimproving the visual imageof Comhaltas at all county, provincial and all-Irelandfleadhs. The guidelines aredesigned to ensure thatComhaltas literature not onlylooks well, but also reflectsthe dynamic and excitingorganisation it is today. This will strengthen theidentity of Comhaltas.
The guide takes a step-by-step approach with examplespresented. It is not intendedto stifle or hinder your owncreative input just to guide it with help of professionalknowledge. Use this as areference when creatingyour own covers.
The current varied designs.
These guidelines are based on programmes of a standardA5 size. If creating a largerprogramme e.g. A4, simplyre-apply the guides to thelarger format. The guidesapply to the front cover only. However the inside shouldbe kept clean and simple, utilising any styles that can be carried over from the cover.
There are two types of layoutavailable to choose from whendesigning your programmecover.
PORTRAIT LAYOUT.The Portrait layout (upperright) is for any programmecover that uses a portraitimage or photograph. i.e. a vertical view.
LANDSCAPE LAYOUT.The Landscape layout (lowerright) is for any programmecover that uses a landscapeimage or photograph, i.e. ahorizontal view. It is unlikethe Portrait layout in thatthe image will not fill asmuch of the cover.
Consistant covers utilising the guidelines.

PLACING YOUR IMAGE.
Whether your picture is of aperformers, a monument, alandscape or even an abstract, choose images that are simpleand relaxed. Please ensurethat images are in focus andthe colours are not dark orwashed out. This also appliesto black and white or singlecolour images or photos.
The example opposite uses abackground colour, it is upto you if you want to use aspecific colour. The colourshould enhance the image.
Examples of typical imageson the two layouts are shown.Examples of alternativeimages are on pages 12-13.
PORTRAIT LAYOUT
The image almost fills theentire cover, with a 35mmspace at the bottom. Avoidstretching your picture, enlarge or reduce itproportionally and usecropping tools in yourrelevant program.
LANDSCAPE LAYOUT
Place the image 35mm fromthe bottom and 80mm fromthe top page edge. The imagewill be 95mm high andrunning side to side. Useyour relevant program tocrop it to this space so itavoids the title area.

The titles are the mostimportant information in the entire programme andmust appear in this order:1) Comhaltas Ceoltóiri Éireann
2) Fleadh Title
3) Location (town name)4) Date
The information must beeasily read in a legibletypeface. Fancy script(cursive or hand-written)and old-style celtic fonts arepopular when attempting toconvey the heritage or moodof the music. However, theseare usually illegible and lookill-conceived. It’s advised they be avoided for titles.
The colour of titles shouldnot be similiar to those in the background image or the letters will disappear. If unsure proof print out afew different colour versions to see. Alternatively, if yourimage has many colours puta flat colour the same as the border behind the title. A 3mm space should be leftbetween the letters and thecolour boxes edges. Examplesof this are shown on page 13.
PLACING TITLES ONLANDSCAPE ANDPORTRAIT LAYOUT’S.
Set the titles 15mm from the top and either side of the cover. Always have italigned to the left. i.e. on the left all the words arevertically aligned.
Try to ensure that each pieceof information in the title areabegins on a new line. Keepany long names or dates toone or two lines by adjustingthe size.
The typeface to use in titles is called FF QUADRAATavailable in both Serif andSans Serif versions. They canbe purchased for legal usefrom: www.fontfont.com
If this is not obtainable, use a similiar typeface.

Title 1 uses FF Quadraat serif Small
Caps. If unavailable use a serif upper-
case. This is sized smallest of all titles.
For titles 2 and 4 the preference is
to use FF Quadraat Sans Small Caps.
If unavailable use a Sans Serif lower-
case bold. Whilst title 2 should
clearly be the largest title, title four
should be a little bigger than title 1.
Title 3 use FF Quadraat serif Bold.
If unavailable use a lower-case serif
bold. It should be slightly bigger
than title 4.
Please note the emphasis placed on
the size and spacing apart of titles.
Your sizing and spacing should
appear as near to the example as
is possible.
