LETTER FROM THE OWNER

Purchasing my first home was a serious undertaking and I was determined to find a home where I could be part of a community, not part of a commuting nightmare. My home was perfect – a spacious townhome in a small, close-knit neighborhood, but close to all the conveniences of downtown Silver Spring and Washington DC. It is only because of a deployment overseas that I am parting with this lovely home. I was initially attracted to the home because of the airy, sun-filled spaces. As an end unit, there are an abundance of windows, plus a huge yard – almost unheard of in Washington DC. Originally built in 1947, the house has been updated to bring in a modern touch, while remaining true to the original character of the house.

The entry level is an open-plan living room and dining room. The beautiful, recently refinished wood floors add to the refined feeling of the space. The dining room features a large alcove – perfect for a sideboard or bookshelves. The kitchen was recently upgraded with stainless steel appliances and opens onto the fenced yard. Off the kitchen is the stairway leading downstairs, which has a pantry for storing the vacuum and cleaning supplies. The finished basement was recently re-carpeted and is spacious enough for the largest entertainment unit imaginable and still has plenty of space left for an extra bed or home office. Through the finished basement is a laundry room and storage area with a walk-up to the backyard.

The top level has 3 bedrooms and a full bath. The bath was completely remodeled last year and now has a marble tile floor, pedestal sink, and cast-iron soaking tub. Best of all is the frosted window. It is supremely serene to start the morning with the sunrise gently lighting the room as you shower and get ready for the day.

The second and third bedroom each have a full closet. A linen closet in the hallway provides plenty of storage for linens and bathroom essentials. The spacious master bedroom has a double closet and features a spectacular picture window that runs the length of the bedroom.

The Lamond neighborhood was built for returning World War II veterans – and many of the neighbors are the original owners or their children who have bought houses of their own in the neighbor-hood. If you happen to be a history buff, you may even recognize a couple of my neighbors who are regularly featured in WWII documentaries. The elevated metro runs the length of the neighborhood, eliminating thru traffic and lending to a small-town feel. Historic downtown Takoma Park is at the top of this small neighborhood with lovely restaurants, shops, and a farmers market on Sundays. It is rare not to run into a neighbor while out and about. At the bottom of the Lamond neighborhood are three charter schools, two elementary and one high school. The elementary schools often bring the small children to the Recreation Center for recess, adding to the friendly, family-oriented atmosphere of the neighborhood. One block from the house is the aforementioned Lamond Recreation Center. The Rec Center has ball fields and sports leagues, a play-ground, and an exercise facility where most people in the neighborhood work out – for free. No gym memberships necessary in this neighborhood!

Though Lamond is a quiet neighborhood and you would think miles from the city, it is an easy commute to downtown DC – whether for work or pleasure. It’s a twenty minute commute to downtown by metro or bus, door to door. And if you just can’t give up your car, North Capitol Street is the only corridor to downtown DC that doesn’t have stoplights every block.

Good luck in your search for the right home. Dr. Jennifer Obernier
