LS CELEBRATES THE INAUGURAL ACADEMY OF BUSINESS & FINANCE

GRADUATION While the newspapers and talk shows discuss and de-bate the difficult economic times our country is experi-encing Lake Shore Central is doing something about it. The Academy of Business and Finance within the Lake Shore Senior High Business Department is a small learn-ing community of students, staff, administrators, commu-nity members and business leaders designed to help pro-mote financial literacy and connect our students with the world of financial services. The curriculum covers bank-ing and credit, financial planning, accounting and delves into areas such as securities, economics, public speaking and insurance. On Wednesday, May 16, sixteen students from the Academy program receives their Certificates of Financial Studies from the National Academy Founda-tion. A beautiful sunset served as the backdrop at the Jim Kelly House on the grounds of the Cradle Beach Camp on Old Lake Shore Road for the ceremony. Over 100 people including family members, business partners, in-ternship providers, teachers and administrators joined in the celebration. The sixteen students completed the rig-orous 3-year program based on the National Academy Foundation’s curriculum, which integrates career-themed subject matter with project-based learning. The students created professional portfolios and completed 130 hours of a paid professional internship. While focused on finan-cial literacy, the students also gained valuable experience in the public forum thorough speaking engagements and presentations throughout their program. Mr. Dave Nasca, President & CEO of Evans Bank, an integral partner with thw District on this targeted edu-cational model, congratulated the students on pioneerng the first school run branch of Evans Bank. He presented Miss Diana Wylie with a community service scholarship. Mrs. Mary Hosler, Regional Manager of Eans Bank and Chairperson of the Academy Advisory Board awarded Ms.Caitlon Smith the Academic Achievement Scholar-ship for her outstanding work throughout her entire three-year program. The Louis Campagna Memorial Leader-ship Scholarship, sponsored by the Campagna family, went to Ronald Thompson for his perservance and strong work ethic, the same traits that characterized Mr. Cam-pagna. While Nicole Littlejohn received the Most Im-proved Academy Student Scholarship from Ms. Jennifer Farrell, of Farrell & Farrell Law Firm. Mr. Fred Press of the National Academy Foundation joined representatives from Key Bank, Evans Bank, Evans Insurance Agency, Goya Foods, Buczek Enterproses, Claddagh Commis-sion, Roswell Park, Queen City Professionals, Connors Hot Dog Stand, Merchants Insurance Agency, Farrell & Farrell, AXA Advisors in congratulating the inaugural Academy class on all their achievements and applauded them for setting the bar so high for the underclassmen in the program. The Academy teachers are proud of this inaugural graduation class of the Academy of Business and Finance at Lake Shore Central Senior High and look forward to continued success for their graduates, as well as their un-derclassmen.

EVANS TOWNSHIP LION CLUB MEMORIAL WEEKEND SERVICE

On Saturday, May 26th, 2012, a record number of attendees were at the Derby Lions Veterans’ Park for a memorial service. Pictured above is a presentation of American Flags that flew over the U.S. Capital procured by Congressmen Brian Higgins to the Gold Star Mothers by Walter Koch. Other speakers included State Assembly man Kevn Smardz, County Legislator John Mills, Suu-pervisor Keith Dash and many other speakers from our local veterans’ organizations and Lion Club. Veteran Jim Trembath spoke about Project Healing Waters and (projecthealingwaters.org) and the Traveling Vietnam Wall which will arrive in Eden at the American Legion Post 880 on Wednesday afternoon July 18, 2012. All speakers were thankful for the service of our local veterans and ask that we remember verterans every day, After the ceremony, all were invited to the American Le-gion Post 928 for pizza and wings. A special thanks goes out to Emblematic of Eden, NY for their donation of 175 magnets (available at the Derby Sunoco) which are being sold to raise funds for future Derby Lions Veterans’ Park improvements.

COMMUNITY CONCERN GOES GREEN WITH SOLAR ENERGY

Community Concern is known for their commitment to enhancing the health of the citizens of the Western New York community. This mission is continued by installing a new 104-panel rooftop solar energy system. Every kilo-watt-hour of electricity produced by this 23.3kW display becomes a valuable source of electricity, which in turn reduces operating costs, pollution, and strengthens the long-term viability of the organization. The new solar energy system was installed by Solar Liberty of Buffalo. Solar Liberty has recently installed 3,200 panels on University of Buffalo’s North Campus, as well as other nonprofit organizations. “This practical energy alternative will save approxi-mately $1500 in electrical savings annually and produce 23,000 kWh of solar electricity’ says executive director, Jerry Bartone. “The money saved will go towards increas-ing access to Community Concern’s services, and aiding our vision of leading the region in evidence-based best practice human services in western New York.” Aside from saving money, the system produces zero pollution, and offsets the building’s carbon footprint by 388 tons of CO2. This is equivalent to 2,000 gallons of gasoline and recycling 6.2 tons of waste. The installation of the solar panel system promotes societal well-being by protecting the environment from-carbon emissions, and health problems asssociated with pollution. Community Concern is excited about the new addition to their building, and the benefits it will produce not only for their organization, but the surrounding com-munity as well.

On Monday, June 4th, the Lake Shore Senior High Music Department will present their second Spring con-cert of the season, this will be their final concert of this school year. This event will include the Mixed Chorus led and accompanied by Mrs. Anna Agro, the Chamber and Symphony Orchestras conducted by Mr. Glenn Molik, a clarinet quartet led by Mrs. Carrie Poissant and the Wind Ensemble directed by Mr. Eric Blodgett. CRADLE BEACH ANNOUNCES IT’S ALL-STAFF REUNION

Cradle Beach is commemorating its 125th year of ser-vice to the children of WNY with an all-staff reunion. The event brings together counselors from the 1950’s to the present. Participants will come from all over the coun-try and WNY to reminisce, reconnect and rediscover this special place on Lake Erie. The camp has been a bond among staff throughout the decades as generations have been part of the Cradle Beach family. The reunion is part of a project to build a Performing Arts Pavillion honoring Jack C. Anthony, former director at the camp. On-going fundraising activities are being held year-round to fund the project. The reunion will be held June 9-10, 2012 at Cradle Beach, 8038 Old Lakeshore Rd., Angola, NY 14006. Every year Cradle Beach serves the needs of thou-sands of children with disabilities and those who come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Through our summer enrichment camping program we are serving nearly 800 children annually. We also offer respite servic-es to 128 individuals who are developmentally disabled and year-round academic, mentoring and tutoring assis-tance through Project SOAR for 60 children at Lovejoy Discover School PS#43 in Buffalo. We all agreed it was one of the best shows we had ever seen and the audience gave a standing ovation as they were invited back for next year. We talked to Da-mion and found out they worked out of Cleveland, Ohio, so we asked if they would come to the other end of Lake Erie and they accepted. MAY CROWNING AT SCS Southtowns Catholic School celebrated May Crowning on Monday, May 14th. In honoring the Virgin Mary as “the Queen of May”, the children placed a crown of roses on Mary’s head. After the ceremony, the children received their 1st Bible and then had a little reception back in the classroom. May Crowning takes place every year around Mother’s Day.
