B&G Gives Back At the Boys and Girls Club of Eden, crafts and projects arealwaysbeingofferedtothemembers.Thisweek, themembers decided to participate in a craft that would give back to the community. After learning about knitting with plastic bags, the members could make a rug that will be do-nated to the City Mission for the people who stop in with-out anything. The members cut the plastic bags, tied them together and started weaving the rug on a hula-hoop loom. Collectively, many hours have been put into this project, and the members were happy they could help. PicturedfromlefttorightCatherine,Lauren(staff),Jen-na, Selena, and Lucas

NOW HERE’S A TIPby JoAnn Derson
* “Clean and save takeout food containers rather than purchasing commercial plastic containers. They are all the same basically, and you will not be at a loss if you need to throw one away, leave it behind or send left-overs home with a guest.” -- M.W. in Nevada
* To preserve your battery life on your smartphone, remember to close out ap-plications that you’re not using. Shut down and restart your phone from time to time as well.
* “After you clip the cou-pons you want to keep from your Sunday paper inserts, pass them along to your neighbors. They may use different products and so may want your coupons!” -- I.L. in Georgia
* “Got too many coffee cups? Add potting soil and a small fl ower to give as gifts to brighten someone’s day!” -- B. in North Carolina
* In a pinch, you can use liq-uid correction fl uid to cover up nail holes in a white wall. Dot and smudge as it dries.
* Want to eat your nine serv-ings of fruits and veggies a day? Keep fresh fruit out
and in view to increase theamount you eat. Cut andotherwise prepare vegeta-bles and store them frontand center in your refriger-ator. Plan your meals aroundthe vegetables instead of theprotein!

COLLECTINGBy Larry Cox
Mustache CupQ: I have a mustache cup of white ironstone trimmed in gold. I paid $45 for it. Are they collectible, and did I get a good deal? -- Jim, To-peka, Kansas
A: Mustache cups were pop-ular throughout the Victori-an-era, when facial hair on men was the style. These cups had a ledge inside the rim that kept liquids away from the upper-lip hair to keep it tidy and prevent mustache wax from melting. A small opening allowed liquids to pass through. Most mustache cups I’ve seen in shops and at antique malls have been priced in the $25 to $45 range. Some of the more ornate ones sell above $45. I have had a mustache for the better part of four decades and have a small collection of the cups. I use one every morning, and it is one of my little pleasures in life.
Q: My sister bought a piece of Pyrex from a dealer who told her it was from the 1930s. I always thought Py-rex was from the 1950s. Can you clarify this for me? -- Mike, Alamo Heights, TexasA: Pyrex was developed in 1912 to resist the heat shock that caused railway brakemen’s lanterns to crack or break when exposed to the elements. The term Py-rex came to describe most heat-resistance glass used in the home. It was fi rst made by the Corning Glass Works and its licensees. David J. Shotwell, author of “Glass A to Z,” points out that Py-rex is made with borax and is technically a borpsilicate glass.***Q: I was a fan of The Beat-les during the 1960s and ‘70s. I have a lunchbox with thermos made by Aladdin. I have been told it could be worth quite a bit. -- Terry,
Metarie, LouisianaA: Your lunchbox was man-ufactured in 1965, and inreasonable condition couldbe worth about $500. Inci-dentally, The Beatles fi rstappeared on American net-work television in 1964, theyear before your lunchboxwas made. The group dis-banded in 1971. John Len-non was murdered outsidehis New York City home in 1980, and George Harrisondied in 2001. Ringo Starrand Paul McCartney stillperform.

Snow BoundA November Storm Remembrance Poem
The night was dark and cloudyWith not a star in sight
As temperatures were decreasingSigns of a possible storm that night
WithverylittletraffictobeseenThe wind had quietly died down
By morn the snow was fallingCovering each and every town
As the snow kept on comingSix and seven feet on the ground
People quickly realizedThey were being snow bound
Many other towns and the countyResponded with much needed aid
As many people were rescuedAfter all safety measures were made
A historic time for manyAs generations will rememberThe tragedies and hardships
Of the 2014 storm of Snow-Vember

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Woman Complaints of Feeling HotDEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 66-year-old woman who usually is too hot. When I tell my doctors, they just sort of laugh it off. It is making my life miserable because if I keep the heat or air conditioning where it is comfortable for me, it is too cold for others. I hate sum-mer and stay inside in the air conditioning.I keep the temperature in my house at 64 degrees Fahr-enheit in the summer and winter. I know other mem-bers of my family do not tolerate being out in the sun when it’s hot, but they aren’t plagued with being too hot otherwise. The sensation of being too warm comes and goes. I am about 40 pounds over-weight, and have been for most of my life. The sensi-tivity has intensifi ed as I’ve aged. I had a hysterectomy in my 30s, and I know some of my hormones were off. -- J.R.
ANSWER: Heat intolerance is common and has several possible causes. The short list includes excess thyroid hormones, loss of estrogen and being overweight. The long list includes, among many others, some serious conditions, such as polycy-themia vera (a blood disor-der of having too many red blood cells), infl ammation of blood vessels, multiple sclerosis and tumors that secrete substances that can affect blood vessels, such as carcinoid or pheochromocy-toma. These are uncommon to rare diseases and usually have other symptoms, and many would likely have pro-
gressed over time. The part of your story that bothers me is that this has been bothering you for years and your doctors haven’t taken it seriously. Even if it isn’t a life-threatening con-dition, it’s been bothering you, and they should have at least tried to help. It’s time to have a frank dis-cussion with your current or a new doctor and explain that you are concerned about this, that it’s affecting your life and comfort, and that you want to be taken seri-ously. I’m not saying your doctor needs to evaluate you for everything on the long list, but he or she does need to listen, think and explain.***DEAR DR. ROACH: Is it better to take Lipitor at night? Is that true for all statins? -- M.E.ANSWER: The cholesterol in our blood comes from the food we eat and also by the cholesterol our body makes. Most cholesterol synthe-sis happens at night. So, it’s better to take a statin at night, particularly for statins
that don’t stay in the body a long time (this is referred toas a short half-life). Lovas-tatin (Mevacor), pravastatin(Pravachol), fl uvastatin (Le-scol) and simvastatin (Zo-cor) have short half-lives,and data have shown betterresults with these taken atnight. On the other hand, atorvas-tatin (Lipitor) and rosuvasta-tin (Crestor) have long half-lives, so it isn’t so importantto take these at night.Naturally, if you are taking any statin, you should con-tinue a careful diet as well. Taking a medication doesn’ttake away the harm of a poor diet.***Dr. Roach regrets that he isunable to answer individualletters, but will incorporate them in thecolumn whenever possi-ble. Readers may emailquestions to [email protected] view and order healthpamphlets, visit www.rb-mamall.com, or write toP.O. Box 536475, Orlando,FL 32853-6475.

COUCH THEATERDVD PREVIEWS
By Sam Struckhoff
PICKS OF THE WEEK“Timbuktu” (PG-13) -- In the rolling dunes of Mali, alongside centuries-old cul-tural artifacts, families face the threat of fundamental-ism forcing its way into the rhythm of life. Kidane (Ibra-him Ahmed) lives simply, herding livestock with his wife, daughter and an ad-opted child who helps with the work. At the outset of the fi lm, foreign jihadists are shown using priceless relics for target practice. The pastoral scene is infested with newly arrived clerics and heavily-armed young men enforcing rules against everything from music and clothing to soccer and so-cializing.Director Abderrahmane Sis-sako creates an enchanting portrayal of fully realized, authentic-feeling characters. Even with the jihadists, you feel like there are real hu-mans under the monstrous deeds. It’s a movie that radi-ates importance and love for life, without burdening the audience with heavy-handed delivery.
“Survivor” (PG-13) -- Mil-la Jovovich stars as a Lon-don-based American securi-ty agent. We’re not exactly sure what kind of agent, but she screens visas and rides a motorcycle. She survives a terrorist bombing, and now everyone thinks she’s re-sponsible. The real bad guys send Pierce Brosnan -- an expert assassin who looks a little groggy -- to kill her while some boring exposi-tion unfolds. Jovovich has to thwart a terrorist plot be-fore the ball drops on New Year’s Eve in Times Square, but just like in real life, it’s
an overhyped event that has most viewers asleep before the end.Brosnan is usually pretty successful in his non-Bond espionage roles, but he doesn’t seem to relish this one. The action sequenc-es mostly revolve around Jovovich running, when her specialty lies more in butt-kicking.
“The Forger” (R) -- John Travolta’s performance in this heist fl ick/family drama is unbelievable. As tough-guy art forger Ray Cutter, his sensitive painting talent, his hard-boiled fi ghting skills, and especially his Boston accent, are thoroughly un-convincing. Ray cuts a deal with Keegan the crime boss (Anson Mount). Keegan will help get Ray an early release from prison, and Ray will forge a Monet painting and swap it with the real-deal in the museum. Ray makes the deal so he can spend some time with his teenage son who has a terminal brain tumor, which doesn’t make much sense, because forging a masterpiece typically takes a while.
“If You Build It” -- Thisdocumentary traces an inno-vative educational programthat puts students in chargeof increasingly challengingand meaningful buildingprojects. Architects EmilyPilloton and Matthew Millerrun “Studio H,” the hands-on program that teaches kidsto make good things withtheir hands to improve theircommunities and the livesof others. Running withoutproper funding -- it’s grants, credit and no salary for ayear -- the students builda new farmer’s market fortheir struggling North Car-olina town. It’s not an easy trip or a perfect program, but the fi lm looks into an inspir-ing story of hard work andimprovement.

* It was Alice Roosevelt, prominent socialite and daughter of President The-odore Roosevelt, who de-clared that her purpose in life was to “empty what’s full, fi ll what’s empty, and scratch where it itches.”
* King James VI of Scotland was also, after the crowns of England and Scotland were united in 1603, King James I of England. He may have been doubly noble, but those who study such things say that his personal habits would not have been out of place in a commoner of the time period. He reportedly never bathed, claiming that baths were an unhealthy practice, and he would wear the same clothes for months on end.
* Three of the fi rst fi ve pres-idents of the United States -- John Adams, Thomas Jef-ferson and James Monroe -- died on July 4.
* Fans of the long-run-ning sitcom “Scrubs” will be familiar with the main character, Dr. John “J.D.” Dorian, and his best friend,
STRANGE BUT TRUEBy Samantha Weaver
Dr. Christopher Turk. You might not realize, though, that the actors who played those roles -- Zach Braff and Donald Faison -- also are best friends in real life.
* The game of tag may seem like an innocent chil-dren’s pastime, but in some countries it has a sinister undertone. In Italy, players pretend that anyone getting tagged has caught the black plague. In Madagascar, lep-rosy is the contagion that is being supposedly spread by the game, while in Spain,
it’s relatively harmlessfl eas.
* Taking the stairs may begood for your cardiovascu-lar health, but there are dan-gers you might not know of. In an average year, approx-imately 27 people are killedwhile using an elevator, while 1,600 die while tak-ing the stairs. ***Thought for the Day:“Learning is what mostadults will do for a living in the 21st century.” -- LewisPerelman

SALOME’S STARSARIES (March 21 to April 19) A plan you’ve kept on hold for a long time fi nally could be greenlighted. But in typical Aries form, you’ll need to be sure that every-thing is in place before you hit the “start” button.TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Others might urge you to act more quickly on your ideas. But you’d be wise to follow your Bovine instincts and get more facts to bolster your position when you fi -nally present it.GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You might be tempted to accept the well-meaning offer of a friend to act as an intermediary in a dispute. But you know best what it’s about, and you can handle the challenge. Good luck.CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Entertainment can play an important role this week. Enjoy some well-earned di-version with people you care about. Something especially wonderful might come from this well-spent time.LEO (July 23 to August 22) Catnaps and playtime are in order for Leos and Leonas who need to take some time off from their hectic sched-ules to restore their energies and rebuild their mental muscles. Have fun.VIRGO (August 23 to Sep-tember 22) Virgos will need to keep an open mind this week about choices that seem improbable. A clos-er study might well reveal
possibilities that might have been overlooked. Stay with it.LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A disappointing outcome of a well-inten-tioned effort should be seen as a lesson in how to do it right the next time. Note all your changes and have your new plan set up by week’s end.SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Travel plans might need readjusting be-cause of changes in the costs previously agreed to. Deal with the problem as quickly as possible to minimize any delays that might result.SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your honest approach to an un-settling experience draws admiration from others. Use their positive feedback to build support for your pro-gram to introduce needed changes.CAPRICORN (December
22 to January 19) Travel isstrong in your aspect thisweek, and so is nostalgia! You might want to consid-er planning a trip to a place that holds some very specialmeaning for you. Bon voy-age.AQUARIUS (January 20 toFebruary 18) A job-related situation could provide anopportunity you hadn’t con-sidered before. Look it overcarefully and see where andhow you can tailor it to fi t your needs.PISCES (February 19 toMarch 20) Showing strengthas well as sympathy helpsyou deal with a diffi cult per-sonal matter. It also helps you set an example for oth-ers when it’s their turn to get involved in the situation.BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of making peo-ple feel comfortable withoutlosing one whit of your own dignity in the process.
