Welcome to the 2019 Cavalcade of Bands Marching Band Championships! The 60th Anniversary of Cavalcade

of Bands Marching Band Championships! We are thrilled to present performances from incredibly talented

students who have spent thousands of hours perfecting their complete production. No matter what the musical

or visual genre, these shows are truly fantastic.

I continue to be honored to be associated with an incredible team of administrators who work continuously to

provide positive educational moments for our members, and their students. Collectively the massive number of

hours, details and work put into making Cavalcade run as smooth as possible are mindboggling. Most never will

see this effort, but being in this role I experience the constant dedication first hand to our directors, staff,

spectators and most importantly, our students.

A huge thank you goes to our fall administrative team of John Keane, Jim Fulkroad, Ken Brown, Ron Abate’,

Ed Stimson, Bobby Molloy, Dave Arnold, Rich Guillen and Bobby Jones. In addition, thanks are also in order to

our band director Board of Directors Adam Nobile, Justin McAdams, Keith Gromis, Anton Romano and Tim Pry

who constantly provide support and guidance to the entire group. Thank you all!

There are many parts of our association which continue to grow, or are in constant forward motion. Some of

these key areas are:

➢ Cavalcade’s 60th Anniversary! Happy 60th Cavalcade!!

➢ A lot of historic information shared on Facebook throughout the fall.

➢ A commentative 60th Anniversary film being released in late November.

➢ Moving one championship location to West Chester University.

➢ Restructuring our championship divisions.

➢ Adding three new members to our Hall of Fame!

➢ Continued ongoing director communications.

➢ For the second year in a row, this “FREE” on line program book!!

Marching band contests, and these championships, are certainly the most visible part of our association and

school music programs. Our Jazz band division is the other part of Cavalcade, which is the largest and most

educational jazz association on the east coast. In addition, each school has various concerts, festivals, musicals

and other events throughout the year. Your support to these events, is critical today more than ever.

Thank You for helping us to constantly support music education and for attending our championships this

weekend. Watching all our students take what directors and staff have provided and bring it to life in both

Hershey Park stadium and West Chester University stadium, is truly amazing. Enjoy every moment of every

performance.

Welcome to Cavalcade’s 2019 Marching Band Championships!

In this 60th anniversary year we are thrilled to host over 90 performing bands who will be cheered on by approximately 20,000 spectators at Hershey Park Stadium in Hershey, PA and at Farrell Stadium in West Chester, PA Special thanks are extended to all parents, directors, staff members, and school administrators who dedicate countless hours on and off the field for students to grow musically, and as young people. Also, a very special thank you to all the schools that hosted Cavalcade shows throughout this 2019 season! Each of these hosts, and their booster organizations, allow thousands of spectators to view and enjoy our marching band activity. Best of luck to all the participants this weekend and most especially to all senior band members. Always remember the skills you have learned, the life lessons, the fun experiences and most importantly, cherish the lifelong friendships that you have made. Enjoy the show! All of us at the Cavalcade of Bands hope to provide the most memorable Championship event ever. Very sincerely, Ken Brown Marching Band Administrator Cavalcade of Bands Association

From The Cavalcade Judging Coordinator

All Cavalcade judges have multiple decades of experience in the marching activity as performers, instructors,

writers, designers, consultants, directors and ultimately judges. This experience is learned through years at the

high school, college, drum corps and indoor guard/percussion level. The amount of time, training, energy,

determination and practice involved in judging is endless. Aside from a mandatory yearly clinic, additional

conference calls, webinars, handbooks and weekly emails keep the judge constantly moving forward.

The judges’ role is twofold:

1. To provide verbal commentary, both constructive and rewarding, to each group.

2. To determine a score for each band. Actually, three scores, two sub-captions and one total score.

3. Rank each band accordingly with in their competitive class.

Each judge independently determines these scores using objective criteria provided for each specific caption.

They all have two 10-point sub-captions for a total score of 20 points. Each caption has its own set of criteria

and concentrates on the specific area for that particular judge to consider.

Our judging team consists of these eight judges:

Chief Judge and Tabulator

Field Visual and Ensemble Visual (these two scores are averaged)

Field Music and Ensemble Music

Overall Effect Visual and Overall Effect Music

At some shows, including championships, specialty awards for best Auxiliary and Percussion are also included.

Judges must feel confident to make tough decisions, within their caption, which might not always be popular.

They must confidently assign scores they believe are correct for the show they are judging. They must judge

each contest as a new event, carrying no pre-conceived opinions into the evening’s contest. Their mandate is to

“judge the show of the day.”

• As directors and staff spend countless hours, weeks and months planning and perfecting their shows,

judges are given minutes (around 7 minutes) to process thousands of bits of data within each show.

• They are expected to see everything, mentally record it, speak encouragingly about it, offer suggestions

or solutions to problems, as well as remain alert and active over many hours of performances.

• They do not have a “warm-up” time; they have to be “on” from the moment the show starts.

• After each performance they have roughly two minutes to reference the sheet criteria, assign scores and

prepare notes for the after-show critique.

• They are then expected to hold intelligent and informative conversations with directors and staff at the

post-contest critique.

• They also may fall under the scrutiny of the entire school community, administration and, most

importantly, students of each band.

• They are as much “on the line” as the students, directors and staffs.

However, this is a wonderful way for people to give back to the activity, which given us so much, and we have

such an intense passion for. Each and every judge strives to do the best possible job for all bands, at every single

competition. While we are certainly not perfect, and occasionally make mistakes, we continue to remain

committed to the activity, the work and our part of this wonderful word of marching band, as we constantly

strive to improve for each performance.

HALL OF FAME

2019 Hall of Fame Inductee

Mr. Ralph Pace

Ralph Pace was a performing member of several drum and bugle corps in Hammonton, NJ, Philadelphia and

Upper Darby, PA. In 1960, he began a masterful teaching career in both drum and bugle corps and indoor guards.

This developed into marching and visual design for all marching areas.

Throughout his career he had the distinction of designing and teaching the following drum and bugle corps: 27th

Lancers, Velvet Knights, Phantom Regiment, Crossmen, Spirit of Atlanta, Cavaliers, Boston Crusaders, Pacific

Crest, Troopers, Madison Scouts and the Reading Buccaneers.

Within Cavalcade, Ralph worked with the Plymouth Whitemarsh Marching Colonials from 1975 through 1982.

During this time, the band won several championships and much of his teaching techniques were then used to set

the national standard for high school band design in California. In addition to PW, he also taught at Sun Valley

High School. At the college level, he was the show designer for the West Chester University Incomparable Golden

Ram marching band and also provided a number of visual design seminars for Cavalcade Hall of Fame member

Dr. James Wells.

Ralph is a member of the following Hall of Fames: Drum Corps International, Drum Corps Associates, New Jersey

and Massachusetts drum corps, 27th Lancers and the Crossmen. Outside of the pageantry arts, Ralph is a broker in

estate and antique jewelry along with antiques, works of art and liquidations of estates and personal items.

The Most important thing to him in life is knowing the individuals or students you had the chance in supporting,

their growth by thinking outside the “BOX” and knowing they were better for believing in themselves always

pushing through those walls of “no I can’t”, to “yes, I can,” is the best accomplishment I could ever ask for in my

life’s work supporting young adults to be their best and beyond.

2019 Hall of Fame Inductee

Mr. Gary Ulrich

Gary Ulrich was a 1970 graduate of Susquehanna University. He was the band director at Cedar Cliff High School

from 1974 through 1980. During these years, the Cedar Cliff instrumental music program grew to include 210

members in the marching band, 140 members in two concert ensembles and 54 members in three jazz ensembles.

His bands were a highly competitive fixture in both Cavalcade Marching Band and Cavalcade Jazz Band

competitions and festivals. While there were and continue to be many successful band directors, few have devoted

the substantial amount of time and energy to Cavalcade at a very critical juncture of our history.

Gary served for six years on the Board of Directors and as a Cavalcade Officer with four years as Secretary and

two years as President. It was during this time that Cavalcade severed ties with the Mid-Atlantic Judges

Association and formed its own Cavalcade of Bands Judges Association. It was Gary who made the motion to

form Cavalcade of Bands Judges; then worked tirelessly to make it happen. In addition to working with a new

judging administration, Gary actively recruited judges for the new association while working with other judges

who transferred over to judging for Cavalcade. He spent a great amount of time meeting with fellow band directors

and band staffs who had reservations about the new venture. Then with all this, he served on the committee that

saw Cavalcade become incorporated.

After exploring other arenas, Gary has returned to his Cavalcade roots as a music and visual judge, where he

remains active today.

Mr. Bill “Woody” Woodward

Bill “Woody” Woodward, has been responsible for instilling the love of the Marching Arts into

many people’s lives. From Percussion Director, Marching Band Staff Member, Band Director

and judge with the Cavalcade of Bands, he has selflessly helped many young people realize their

potential and go on to become amazing human beings in and out of the marching arts. Without

Woody in this activity, it's hard to believe if there would ever be any "Innovation”.

Woody’s experience spans more than 30 years including his long-time involvement, 1980 – 2000

with the Hatboro Horsham High School instrumental programs. He has also worked with Upper

Moreland and Plymouth Whitemarsh High Schools.

He has been a performer, caption head, composer and arranger for the Black Watch Drum and

Bugle Corps, Jersey Surf Drum and Bugle Corps, Bushwhackers All Age Drum and Bugle

Corps, United Indoor Percussion and Riptide Indoor Percussion. Through the indoor percussion

arena, Woody is the first and only director to bring a WGI Percussion World Championship

home to Hatboro Horsham High School in 1995.

Bill has been a Cavalcade music judge for many years and has been a steadfast judge for our

association. He has brought his creative and energetic approach to thousands of Cavalcade

students especially in the General Effect Music area. Giving back in this capacity is just one of

the many ways he has touched many lives, with so many students, directors, staff, judges and

parents being better because they have been taught by Woody.

The Pittston Area Marching Patriots have a long history of success spanning several decades, and would

like to dedicate this years performance, as we do each and every season, to everyone who has ever put

on the Marching Patriot uniform. We would not be who we are today had it not been for those who laid

the foundation before us, for future years to come.
