Eliminate – the candidate is clever in how they applied the ‘eliminate’ part. ey look to reduce material and weight by eliminating parts of the toothbrush that don’t really need to be there. Reverse – By mirroring the bristles onto the underside of the toothbrush head the candidate successfully applies ‘reverse’. As a result, the toothbrush has been given a secondary function (scrubbing brush for hard-to-reach places).

This candidate wanted to generate a range of new ideas for a toothbrush. They decided to use the SCAMPER technique as it helps to produce unique and diverse ideas.

It is clear that the candidate uses the SCAMPER technique effectively to generate new ideas for the toothbrush. 2D, pictorial and detail sketches have been used to communicate these new ideas.

These ideas would probably never have been generated if the candidate did not use the SCAMPER technique.

The candidate now has seven unique and diverse ideas that can be developed.

Substitute – the candidate has thought about improving the grip (ergonomics) of the handle. They have substituted the plastic handle with a textured rubber grip.

Combine – the candidate has added a secondary function to the toothbrush by combining it with a dental floss dispenser.

Adapt – the shape of the bristles on the head have been changed from flat to curved to fit around the shape of teeth and mouths.

Modify – the candidate has modified the shape of the handle to make it thinner. This may be easier to hold and will later be tested through modelling.

Put to another use – The most unique idea is generated here. The candidate turns the toothbrush handle into a torch. Although the function of the product is totally changed it, provides the candidate with another diverse idea to inspire thought.

Eliminate – the candidate is clever in how they applied the ‘eliminate’ part. They look to reduce material and weight by eliminating parts of the toothbrush that don’t really need to be there.

Reverse – By mirroring the bristles onto the underside of the toothbrush head the candidate successfully applies ‘reverse’. As a result, the toothbrush has been given a secondary function (scrubbing brush for hard-to-reach places).
