Dear Parkcrest Families,
May has been a very busy month at Parkcrest with many celebrations and activities. I
want to extend a big thank you to all of you for hosting our wonderful Teacher Apprecia-
tion Luncheon—the variety of delicious food was very appreciated by all staff.
The Parkcrest Track and Field team also wrapped up their season in May with the final
track meet. All students enjoyed success at the track meet and our grade 6 boys and girls
relay teams won the district plaques. Thank you to Mrs. Andrews, Mr. Hodges and Mr.
Grundy for coaching the track team! Thank you also to all the parents who took time out
of their busy schedules to drive students to meets. Congratulations to all participants who
worked throughout the spring season to train and participate in the track team!
As the school year winds down, we all begin to think about the coming school year and
what it will look like. Throughout the school year, staff have been working closely with
students and have a great deal of insight into their learning and social needs. This infor-
mation will be used to load classes for the upcoming school year. In the past few years, I
have received a great number of very specific requests for student placement. Parents
have been asking for their children to be placed with specific teachers and friends. This
has really impacted the class loading process in a negative way and has an effect on the
learning environment of all children. In order to meet one request, we have to make
changes to the placement of other children.
Staff spend a great deal of time reflecting on the best placement for all students. During
the loading process, there are very rich conversations on the needs of all children and
these conversations continue for days. In addition to this, there is a great deal of platoon-
ing within the school (going to different teachers for different subjects) and thus students
often work with different teachers.
As a parent, we all want the best for our child and hope that they will have a great year.
As a staff, we want the best for every child and will place students in such a way that all
students will be successful. Our experience tells us that if classes are not loaded effec-
tively, it affects the learning environment of every child. I have sent a letter home today
outlining the guidelines for class placements, any letters that do not follow those guide-
lines will not be accepted. Thank you for your support in making this process effective
for all students.
Sincerely,
Navdeep Aujla
Principal

TRACK NEWS
Congratulations to all the students in grade 4 – 7 that joined the track team this year.
The track team was made up of 55 students this year. On May 3rd the students attended
the District Track meet at Swanguard Stadium where they competed in the 100m,
200m, 400m, 800 m and 4 x 100 Relay events. All students showed impeccable sports-
manship and skills in all the events. They should all be proud of their effort this year.
A special congratulations goes out to both our grade 6 girls and boys 4 x 100 relay
teams who both placed first in the district. Congratulations to the grade 6 girls relay
team, Quinn R., Karen L., Kennedy M., and Megan G. and to the grade 6 boys relay
team, James B., Nathan C., Matthew S. and Parker M.
The Parkcrest Leadership Club consists
of students who promote positive peer
interaction and encourage school spirit
through various school activities.
During Sports Day last month, Grade 6 Leadership stu-
dents sold Rafiki bracelets to raise money for Free the
Children and $695 was raised! Students plan to sell
bracelets sometime this month. Stay tuned for the date
and time of the next Rafiki Bracelet sale.
This spring all of the grade six and seven students at Parkcrest School have been participating in the Battle of
the Books. In teams of six or seven, the students read a selection of books including:
Wonder by R.J. Palacio
Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davos
My Life as a Book by Janet Tashijian
Three Good Deeds by Vivian Vande Velde
Hoot by Carl Hiaasen
Iqbal by Francesca D’Adamo
Holes by Louis Sachar
Anything but Typical by Nora Raleigh Baskin
Safe as Houses by Eric Walters
Pendragon by D.J. MacHale
Some students were able to read one or two of the books and some read all ten
but they all worked together as a team to answer questions related to the stories.
The top two teams competed against teams from Stoney Creek Community School and Rosser Elementary on
May 31st at Rosser School.
Congratulations to Kaitlyn, Jason, Emma, Michela, Yara, James and Sam who brought the trophy back to
Parkcrest!

know as soon as possible. We need
this information in order to properly
organize next year classes. Thank

a long lost item belongs to you or your child
(ren). All items not collected by June 24th will
be donated to charity.
Listserve &
Parent Messages The School District Listserve system
is being slowed down considerably
when notices are attached to the
emails. For the sake of efficiency
and expediency, we will include a
link in our listserve messages where notices
can be viewed. We are also doing this with
our monthly newsletters.
We encourage you to check the Parkcrest
website and online calendar on a regular basis
in order to keep up on the latest news.
Thank you so very much to all
the parents who sent a fabu-
lous feast for the Parkcrest
Staff on Tuesday, May 17th.
Everything was absolutely
delicious!
We are extremely apprecia-
tive and thankful to work with
wonderful Parkcrest families!
