SKF has considerable knowledge of shaft couplings, resulting mainly from extensive experience gained in solving power transmis-sion problems where shafts are supported in rolling bearings. It is therefore natural that shaft couplings should be included in the range of products marketed.

The SKF range of flexible shaft couplings comprises standard couplings for pumps, fans, etc. and also sophisiticated couplings such as those used in rolling mill applications.

If the type of coupling required is not shown in this catalogue, SKF should be consulted for information. Almost every coupling problem can be solved by one of the products in the SKF range.

SI units are used in this catalogue; relevant conversion factors are given below.

Gear couplings

Gear couplings are torsionally rigid and are supplied to two designs – completely flexible and flexible/rigid. A completely flexible coup-ling comprises two hubs with an external gear and two outer sleeves with an internal gear. It’s a universal coupling for all sorts of applications and accommodates all possible misalignments (angular, offset and combined) as well as large axial moments. Machines, bearings, seals, and shafts are therefore not subjected to the additional forces, sometimes of considerable magnitude, which arise from unavoidable misalignment usually associated with rigid shaft couplings.

A flexible/rigid coupling comprises one flex-ible geared half and one rigid half. It does not accommodate parallell displacement of shafts but does accommodate angular misalignment. This type of couplings are primarily used for “floating shaft” applications.

Sizes 010 – 070 all have crowned teeth with a 20° pressure contact († fig. 1). This enables to accommodate up to 1,5° static an-gular misalignment per gear mesh. However, minimizing the operational misalignment will maximize the life of the coupling as well as the life of other machinery components such as bearings etc.

Each sleeve flange is supplied with two pipe plugs 180° apart. This permits assembly of a full flex-coupling with four lubrication plugs positioned every 90° apart, to facilitate lubri-cation († fig. 2).

A Buna-N “O” ring is fitted to the outer sleeve, to retain grease and exclude contam-inants († fig. 3).

A straight faced tooth form is used for the sizes 080 to 300 († fig. 4). They are designed to accommodate 0,5° misalignment per gear mesh. These sizes are also equipped with a removable end ring for ease of assembly and to allow inspection of the gear teeth.

KSG grease is recommended in order to obtain maximum operating life. See page 26 for further information.

Completely flexible gear-type couplings with crowned teeth

These couplings accommodate a total misalignment of up to 3°. Where the misalignment is larger than 1,5°, however, SKF should be consulted. The coup-lings can withstand start-up peak moments of two times the stated continuous torque.

By reversing one or both of the hubs, the same coupling can be used for different shaft end separ-ations.

These couplings have efficient O-ring seals and should be lubricated with grease.

Disc couplings

KD disc couplings provide reliable transmis-sion of mechanical power from driving to driven machine where low maintenance, non-lubricated couplings are required.

KD disc couplings are specifically designed to accommodate general purpose drive sys-tem applications such as centrifugal pumps, generators, cooling towers, machine tools, printing, and pulp and paper machines.

The coupling transmit torque and accom-modate both angular, offset and axial mis-alignment between shafts, with a coupling comprised of shaft mounted hubs connected through flexible disc packs with spacer or sleeve assemblies.

All covered disc couplings use stainless steel discs as flexible members, providing high strength and good corrosion resistance. Each disc pack accommodates up to 0,5° continuous angular misalignment and can withstand start-up peak moments of two times the stated torque († product tables). The streamline design makes sure that the reac-tion load on equipment bearings is minimized. These disc couplings are inherently self- centring: additional provision for limited end float is not required.

All disc packs are unitized and along with self-locking nuts, they greatly reduce the number of loose parts, thus simplifying instal-lation and replacement.

On the next pages the most common disc coupling types can be found. For higher torque capacity, floating shaft applications, vertical installation etc., consult SKF.

Spacer disc couplings

The KD21 couplings are designed for medium and heavy-duty applications requiring moderate shaft separations. The minimal number of com-ponents yields an economical disc coupling solu-tion to spacer applications. The larger sizes avail-able in the KD21 series allow application to larger, high power machines.

Close coupled disc couplings

The KD10 coupling is designed to work in place of standard close coupled gear couplings. The power capacity of the KD10 coupling is the highest in the industry, allowing the easiest conversion from a lubricated coupling to a low maintenance disc coupling.

The split spacer simply drops away from the hubs for faster installation and replacement of disc packs without moving connected machinery. Meets AGMA Class 8 as manufactured.

Elastic couplings

Elastic couplings of the elastomeric type incorporate a pre-compressed rubber com-ponent, which provides extra strength and long life. These couplings cater for all types of misalignment. The hubs are made of high-strength aluminium alloy, making the coupling light and corrosion resistant. The rubber com-ponent damps shocks and provides smooth, quiet power transmission, thus protecting both the driving and the driving machines.

Mounting is very simple. As the rubber component is a split insert, it can be mounted after the shafts have been aligned.

Completely flexible, elastic couplings

These couplings accommodate a total misalignment of 1° and can withstand start-up peak moments of two times the stated continuous torque.

By reversing one or both of the hubs, the shaft coupling can be used for different shaft end separ-ations.

Greases for gear/grid shaft couplings

Coupling greases, unlike bearing or general purpose grease, must withstand the centri-fugal forces created by a rotating coupling. These greases – KSG and KHP – are specific-ally formulated to resist the heavy centrifugal forces associated with all applications. These forces can cause the all-important base oil to separate from the soap thickeners and addi-tives. Unlike greases with lithium-based thickeners, KSG and KHP greases use poly-ethylene thickeners, with a density closer to that of the base oil, and therefore much less susceptible to separation.

KSG grease is intended for speeds up to 3 600 r/min and KHP is best suited for speeds above 3 600 r/min.

KSG standard coupling greaseKSG is an NLGI Grade 1 coupling grease with EP additives for use in any grease-packed coupling, such as gear, grid and chain-type couplings, in standard industrial service. Su-perior to commonly available greases adapted to coupling use, KSG was developed specifi-cally as a coupling lubricant.

KHP high performance coupling greaseKHP is an NLGI Grade 1 grease with EP addi-tives which exceeds the design requirements needed for extended operating and relubrica-tion intervals. KHP grease is recommended for high-speed grease lubricated gear cou-plings in petrochemical, process, and utility industries.

Minimum requirements for other greases– NLGI 1 (speeds below 300 r/min,

NLGI 0 or 00).– Max. 13 % soap.– Min. base oil viscosity 600 cSt at 40 °C.– The soap in the grease must not separate

from the base oil due to centrifugal forces.

SKF oil injection method applied to flexible shaft couplingsBy combining the principle of SKF oil injection method on flexible shaft couplings, you re-ceive a high torque interference fit for plain, cylindrical shafts.

Since there is no need for machining any keyways, splines or tapered shafts, you can design for smaller shaft diameter = less weight.

Mounting and dismounting are fast and easy with no external tools except a pump set.

PrincipleThe coupling works on the same principle as the SKF OK couplings, i.e a thicker outer sleeve (in this case the flex coupling hub) with an internal taper is driven up on a thin, exter-nally tapered inner sleeve. Oil is then injected between the sleeves in order to virtually elim-inate friction between the tapered surfaces. The couplings then have an inbuilt hydraulic unit which creates an oil pressure thus driving up the flex hub on the inner sleeve.

Evolving by-wire technology SKF has a unique expertise in fast-growing by-wire technology, from fly-by-wire, to drive-by-wire, to work-by-wire. SKF pioneered practical fly-by-wire technology and is a close working partner with all aerospace industry leaders. As an example, virtually all aircraft of the Airbus design use SKF by-wire systems for cockpit flight control.

SKF is also a leader in automotive by-wire tech-nology, and has partnered with automotive engin-eers to develop two concept cars, which employ SKF mechatronics for steering and braking. Further by-wire development has led SKF to produce an all-electric forklift truck, which uses mechatronics rather than hydraulics for all controls.

SKF – the knowledge engineering company

From the company that invented the self-aligning ball bearing 100 years ago, SKF has evolved into a knowledge engineering com-pany that is able to draw on five platforms to create unique solutions for its customers. These platforms include bearings, bearing units and seals, of course, but extend to other areas including: lubricants and lubrication systems, critical for long bearing life in many applications; mechatronics that combine mechanical and electronics knowledge into systems for more effective linear motion and sensorized solutions; and a full range of ser-vices, from design and logistics support to con-ditioning monitoring and reliability systems.

Though the scope has broadened, SKF continues to maintain the world’s leadership in the design, manufacture and marketing of rolling bearings, as well as complementary products such as radial seals. SKF also holds an increasingly important position in the mar-ket for linear motion products, high-precision aerospace bearings, machine tool spindles and plant maintenance services.

The SKF Group has global ISO 14001 en-vironmental certification. Individual divisions have been approved for quality certification in accordance with either ISO 9000 or QS 9000.

With some 100 manufacturing sites world-wide and sales companies in 70 countries, SKF is a truly international corporation. In ad-dition, our distributors and dealers in some 15 000 locations around the world, an e-business marketplace and a global distribu-tion system put SKF close to customers for the supply of both products and services. In essence, SKF solutions are available wherever and whenever customers need them. Overall, the SKF brand and the corporation are stronger than ever. As the knowledge engin-eering company, we stand ready to serve you with world-class product competencies, intellectual resources, and the vision to help you succeed.

Developing a cleaner cleanerThe electric motor and its bearings are the heart of many household appliances. SKF works closely with appliance manufacturers to improve their products’ per-formance, cut costs, reduce weight, and reduce energy consumption. A recent example of this cooperation is a new generation of vacuum cleaners with sub-stantially more suction. SKF knowledge in the area of small bearing technology is also applied to manufacturers of power tools and office equipment.

Harnessing wind powerThe growing industry of wind-generated electric power provides a source of clean, green electricity. SKF is working closely with global industry leaders to develop efficient and trouble-free turbines, providing a wide range of large, highly specialized bearings and condition monitoring systems to extend equipment life of wind farms located in even the most remote and inhospitable environments.

Working in extreme environmentsIn frigid winters, especially in northern countries, extreme sub-zero tempera-tures can cause bearings in railway axleboxes to seize due to lubrication starva-tion. SKF created a new family of synthetic lubricants formulated to retain their lubrication viscosity even at these extreme temperatures. SKF knowledge enables manufacturers and end user customers to overcome the performance issues resulting from extreme temperatures, whether hot or cold. For example, SKF products are at work in diverse environments such as baking ovens and instant freezing in food processing plants.

Maintaining a 350 km/h R&D labIn addition to SKF’s renowned research and development facilities in Europe and the United States, Formula One car racing provides a unique environment for SKF to push the limits of bearing technology. For over 50 years, SKF products, engineering and knowledge have helped make Scuderia Ferrari a formidable force in F1 racing. (The average racing Ferrari utilizes more than 150 SKF com-ponents.) Lessons learned here are applied to the products we provide to auto-makers and the aftermarket worldwide.

Delivering Asset Efficiency Optimization Through SKF Reliability Systems, SKF provides a comprehensive range of asset efficiency products and services, from condition monitoring hardware and soft-ware to maintenance strategies, engineering assistance and machine reliability programs. To optimize efficiency and boost productivity, some industrial facilities opt for an Integrated Maintenance Solution, in which SKF delivers all services under one fixed-fee, performance-based contract.

Planning for sustainable growth By their very nature, bearings make a positive contribution to the natural en- vironment, enabling machinery to operate more efficiently, consume less power, and require less lubrication. By raising the performance bar for our own prod-ucts, SKF is enabling a new generation of high-efficiency products and equip-ment. With an eye to the future and the world we will leave to our children, the SKF Group policy on environment, health and safety, as well as the manufactur-ing techniques, are planned and implemented to help protect and preserve the earth’s limited natural resources. We remain committed to sustainable, environ-mentally responsible growth.
