Jake Winters Graduating Senior

May 2014“We can complain because rose bushes have thorns, or rejoice because thorn bushes have roses.”

-Abraham Lincoln

Page 2: 60 second Autobiography

My name is Jake Winters

I am a fifth year graduating senior from James Madison University in Virginia.

I changed my major to Hospitality

going into my junior year.

To give you a better sense of who I am, I prepared this slide deck to describe some of

what I’ve learned in school and life.

These experiences have molded the person I am today.

I learn by doing.

For all the course work I did, nothing taught me more than my hands-on experiences.

I excel in the work place where I have used my competitive nature and my learning style to

my advantage.

It may be cliché but, I’m a people person

The last 3 summers I worked as a para-educator for children with Autism.

This is where I became aware of my love for helping others.

It’s not that I knew what was happening while it was happening, but growing up in a loving family gave me a

moral compass.

My dad blew this callfor sure

Every Fourth of July was fireworks from the boat, right out

in front of The Sagamore

I realize now that I learned responsibility at a young age being the captain of my family’s boat.

Having about 30 aunts and uncles, plus about 40 first cousins, gives you tons of life experiences growing up and helped me to

appreciate the fact that everyone’s personality is different.

My father is one of eleven and my mother is one of seven.

I have a pretty cool sister

And we’ve been best friends for life

It was here at our timeshare in Cancun, that I first developed an affinity for hospitality

I remember seeing Fernando, Rosa, and Arturo (employees at Royal Resorts) every year and was impacted by their love for their jobs.

I’m driven by a competitive desire to win and have learned valuable lessons through sports.

After 5 years of school, I planned and executed a 5-course 120 plate formal dinner

(Hakuna Matata themed) as Back of House Manager.

This capstone project helped me to learn about food costing and the financials of a food and beverage operation

It also helped me to learn how to work effectively as part of a long term team

JMU, in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley, was a really cool and beautiful place to go

to school.
