Before we read:-

There is huge diversity in India in caste, creed, colour, religion and language of the people .

Sometimes even a minor incident becomes sufficient to provoke the feelings of the people which may result into tense situations and even riots.

In the present lesson, all the reptiles like crocodiles, tortoises, lizards and snakes live in the forest of the village, Pambupatti.

Everything was going on smoothly then who and what made the tortoises, snakes and lizards leave the forest forever?

What happens to the forest in the absence of tortoises, snakes and lizards?

Could they ever come back to the forest?

Let’s learn the lesson ’What Happened to the Reptiles’ to find out the answers of these questions.

Once a religious riot broke out in the village where Prem lived. Somehow saving his life he comes to a village, Pambupatti miles away from his own.

Now, Pambupatti is a village where many types of people live together harmoniously.

Here he is well-taken care of by an old man who tells Prem a story of reptiles like crocodiles, tortoises, snakes and lizards who had been in his village forest a long, long ago.

An old man takes care of Prem.

Prem runs away from his village.

There would be a monthly meeting of all the reptiles of the forest. Makara, a giant crocodile was the president of the meetings.

One day, he wrote a letter to the tortoises ordering them not to attend the meeting and leave the forest forever.

Poor tortoises had to leave the forest , but in their absence the forest started smelling very bad because tortoises ate up rotten fruit and rotten animals in the river and they were not there.

Next was the turn of the snakes who too were ordered to leave the forest quickly. Now in their absence rats and frogs grew up in so large numbers that crocodiles became helpless at their trouble. Rats and frogs even ate up the eggs and the young ones of the crocodiles.

Tortoises receive Makara’s letter.

Snakes too receive Makara’s letter.

After the snakes now it was the turn of the lizards who too were driven away

mercilessly out of the forest.

As the lizards were not there in the forest insects grew up in millions creating another big problem to the crocodiles.

Finally, all the crocodiles even Makara understands the importance of the gone animals. Quickly messages are sent to call them back.

Lizards go away from the forest.

Presently all the gone animals come back to the forest .

Within just two months the gone glory of the forest comes back and everything becomes normal as it was earlier.

Thus, having heard the story , the hesitant Prem decides to take the story back to his village as he learns the moral of the story that everyone has their own equally important role to play in the society and each of us has a place in this strange funny world of ours.

All the animals come back to the forest after receiving messages.

PARAPHRASE OF THE LESSON

The writer here correlates the importance of religious harmony citing the example of the reptiles. She uses the analogy to stress the importance of all the factors in the social strata. The existence of a class is unimaginable in the absence of the other/s as all the classes are equally important for the smooth functioning of the society. Even the king may require the help of a man with the ‘minutest’ importance from his point of view in the ‘Hour of Need’. So everybody is equally important. The way no body parts of ours are useless, all are equally important for the smooth functioning of our body; all the human beings moreover all the living beings including trees and even micro organisms are important for the smooth functioning from the social, religious, physical, economical point of view.
