In Lesson #5 Jesus moved from his familiar village of

Nazareth, relocating to Capernaum 40 miles away on

the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee.

At Capernaum Jesus chose his first disciples: Peter,Andrew, James and Johnthree of whom (Peter, James

and John) become is inner circle, his most intimate

    companions.

Making Capernaum his headquarters, Jesus began hisquest, traveling throughout Galilee teaching, preaching

    and healing.

In Lesson #6 we sit with the crowd on the hillside of the Mt. of

Beatitudes and we experience an example of Jesus teaching:

The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7).

The first of five Great Discourses that comprise the core of

Matthews narrative architecture, the Sermon on the Mountis a brilliant, 4-part teaching:

    1. A clever and memorable introduction (5: 2-16)

    2. Six propositions that exceed the law (5: 17-48)

    3. Six concrete actions to implement the Law (6: 17: 6)4. A dramatic call to action (7: 7-29).

In Lesson #6 we examine Part 1, the introduction.

Jesus uses three distinct methods in his teaching:1. Expository teaching

    2. Didactic teaching and

    3. Parables

The Sermon on the Mount is an outstanding example

    of his Expository teaching.

    2. Six propositions that exceed the law (5: 17-48)

    3. Six concrete actions to implement the Law (6: 17: 6)

    4. A dramatic call to action (7: 7-29).

A Quick Note on Fra Angelicos FrescoThis very stylized fresco is fraught with symbolism!

    1. Notice that Jesus is teaching on a rock mountain. As Moses

delivered the message of the Law on Mt. Sinai, so Jesus delivers the

message of Grace on a rock mountain.

    2. Jesus is dressed in a red under garment with a blue garment on top.

Red suggests his shed blood on the cross, blue his heavenly origin.3. Light in the fresco moves from bottom to top, drawing our eyes from

earth to heaven. In addition, Jesus points upward, reinforcing this

movement of light, and the circle of the disciples draws our eyes

    upward as well.

    4. Jesus seems to be addressing Peter on the left, reinforcing Jesuslater statement, on this rock I will build my church.

    5. Judas sits 2ndfrom the right. His halo is black, appropriate for the

    betrayer.

    1. We read in Matthew 4: 24 that Jesus famespread throughout Galilee, the Decapolis,Jerusalem and from beyond the Jordan. To whatdo you attribute this?

    2. The Beatitudes begin with: Blessed are the

poor in spirit. Why do you think Jesus added thequalifier, in spirit?

    3. Are the Beatitudes a random list of statements,or do they follow a logical sequence? If notrandom, what is the organizing principle?

    4. With blessedness comes responsibilities? In theBeatitudes, what are they?

    5. God has blessed each of us abundantly. Whatresponsibilities do you bear as a result?
