The Lady of the House of Love retold by A. Student

The last of the peasants left the scary village where shadowslurked and cats seemed to spitat nothing.

So the beautiful girl and her servant, who both lived in the castle above the village, had no neighbours.


The beautiful girl is queen

of the vampires. Shewears her mother’swedding dress and sitsalone in her dark, highhouse. She sets out theTarot cards from whichshe reads her fortune.

She is beautiful, butabnormal. She riseswhen the sun sets.

Her companion is her pet lark which sings mournfully in its cage.


She has a servant: an old and loyal woman who, ondark and moonless nights, lets the girl into the garden. Inthe garden the girl kills what she can catch, a rabbit, orsometimes a young shepherd boy who has come to visit.The girl loathes the food she eats, but what can she do?


One hot day, an officer in the British Army, blond, blue-eyed and

heavy muscled visits the little known uplands of Romania. He is on

leave before going to fight in the trenches in France. At dusk he arrives in the deserted village of the vampires. He’s hot, hungry,thirsty, weary, dusty …


Meanwhile, in the chateau, the girl turns over lesamoureaux. Never before has she cast herself a fateinvolving love. She trembles with fear.

When he arrives in the village, the young officer isdisappointed. There is no village inn and the houses areall falling apart. There is no-one to offer him food and a

bed for the night, or is there? He goes to the fountain,still gushing water, to drink and to wash his hands and face.

When he raises his head from the water, hesees that a woman has arrived silently besideshim. She is dressed like a servant with a greatbunch of housekeeping keys at her waist. Shecurtsies to the young man and beckons for him to follow her to the chateau.


The heavy scent of red rosesalmost overpowers him as

heleaves the village and entersthe grounds of the chateau.There are too many roses. Itis a jungle of roses with

sharp,vicious thorns ready to drawblood if you stray from thepath.


It is dusk and the sun is falling sadly behind the dilapidated chateau. The young officer is reminded of the frightening tales he and his brothers used to tell each other on winter evenings. As he arrives at the great oak door, he reminds himself he is no longer a child ready to be frightened by his own imagination.


The servant takes him to a room and motions for him to sit at the great oak table. She brings him food and rich red wine. He dines alone on stew and great hunks of coarse bread.

All the time he eats, the servant watches him closely, with obvious satisfaction. The young officer feels unnerved by her intense stare and utter silence.


When he has finished eating, the servant indicates that he should follow her. She mimes drinking, so the young officer assumes he is now to meet the owner of this chilly ruin of a home. He follows the old servant along a number of corridors all lined with evil portraits of the

chateau’s former inhabitants.

Finally the servant reaches a door and knocks. A soft voice calls, ‘Entrez.’ The young officer enters, but has difficulty seeing. Gradually as his eyes become accustomed to the dim light, he sees a pretty but skeletally thin girl standing by a small table. She seems to be wearing a wedding dress and looks unutterably sad.

As the servant raises a lamp to the young officer’s face the girl lets out a small cry and drops her Tarot cards. Immediately the young officer stoops to pick them up. The pack of cards seems an oddly horrible play thing and rapidly he covers a capering skeleton with a happier picture of two young lovers. Putting the cards back into her hands, he notices her nails are long and pointed, like banjo picks.


She makes him coffee, but

says little.

Her eyes are dark and watch his every move. She stares longingly at his fine white throat.

Later, she shows him to his chamber and bids him rest. As she turns from him her dark glasses fall to the floor and he sees that she is crying. Her glasses break into tiny pieces and as she bends to retrieve them she cuts her finger. Without thinking he takes her hand and kisses the wound.


He is woken by larksong. The shutters and curtains are all open and light pours in. The girl is nowhere to be seen.He takes the caged lark to the window and frees it. At first it is unwilling to fly, then joy lifts his heart as it takes to the skies.


As he moves back into the room, he notices the girl asleep across her Tarot cards. Asleep? No, she is dead. His kiss made her human and she died. In her hand she holds the rose she had plucked for him. He takes it and returns to his regiment.
