Helen Hunt interview with
the Wall Street Journal
• Did you read Mark O’Brien’s 1990 magazine article, ‘OnSeeing a Sex Surrogate,’ while you prepared for the role?
• Yes. He has a book, and that’s one of the chapters. There’sthe thing with the ear, when he goes “That feels weird.”The way it actually happened was he said, “Can I put mytongue in your ear?” And she said, “No, because I hate
that, but it’s a really good question and I am glad you askedbecause you will ask somebody else and they’ll be reallywanting you do that.” And I thought, “That’s it!” That’s theexchange right there: It’s great you asked. It’s great that Isay no. And it’s really important you ask again.
• Who do you hope sees this movie?
• I really want young people to see this movie. I want themto sneak in. While they are seeing 5,000 other images ofwhat sex is supposed to be, if they could see this one also,it would be pretty great.
• The sex in this film is not that fake, airbrushed perfect sexshown in so many films that are geared toward thataudience.
• This film is about how awkward sex is, how beautiful it is,how scary it can be, how vulnerable everybody feels.
• Is Fox Searchlight doing anything specifically to bringyounger people in?
• They can’t. I’m totally naked so it’s an R. That’s just how itis.
• What about college students?
• I’m going to push that, to bring it to colleges. On the onehand, maybe by then it ’s too late. But maybe it’s never toolate. It’s a good idea. Thank you for that.

Masters and Johnson’s research
• As well as recording some of the firstphysiological data from the human body and sexorgans during sexual excitation, they also framed
their findings and conclusions in language thatespoused sex as a healthy and natural activitythat could be enjoyed as a source of pleasure andintimacy.
• The era in which their research was conductedpermitted the use of methods that have not beenattempted before or since. (source: Wikipedia)
