Summary

2

• Record reach for 6 Music at 2.35m listeners: The

station saw a rise of +1% on the Q and a

significant +5% on the Y to overtake its previous

highest reach of 2.34m (in Q3’16).

• Record share for 6 Music at 2.3%: The station’s

share saw a +0.1% pt rise QoQ for the second

time in a row.

• Second highest average hours achieved amidst rising reach: Listeners tuned in on average 9hrs

57mins, a marginal drop on the Q (-3 mins) but rise

on the year (+35 mins), a great achievement

considering the heightened reach for the station.

• Average age remains steady at 43: For the third

quarter in a row, the average listener age

remained steady at 43 (up + 3 years on the year) .

• Record reach for 40-55s (incl. Mature Music

Lovers), while dip seen amongst 20-34s (includes the Eclectic Seekers): Reach among the 40-55s

rose by +56k to exceed 1m for only the second

time (1.03m), while a -20k/-3% drop in 20-34 year

old listeners over the quarter to 571k saw reach to

that audience down -19% on the year (Q1’16

having seen the current record of 705k).

• Rise seen for both C2DEs and listeners in North of England: Record reach for C2DE audiences, up a

great +14% to 657k listeners (up on the previous

record of 614k) while listeners in the North rose a

good +4% on Q and +1% on year to see the

second highest level of 534k.

• Proportion of female listeners drops to lowest since 2013: This quarter’s record reach was

achieved from a growth in male listeners, up

+78k/+6% on Q (to 1.45m), while the number

of female listeners has dropped -53k to 897k.

Women now make up 38.2% of the

listenership, the lowest level since Q4 2013.

• For nations; reach in Scotland recovers marginally following slight dip up +23k to

168k (16%); an encouraging sign following

the 6 Music Festival having taken place in

Glasgow towards the very end of the

quarter (24th-26th March).

• DAB listening reaches record proportions: rising +2pts to account for 74% of all listening,

DAB reached 1.9m (+150k/+9% on Q) while

online/app reach was down -82k/-12% to

622k.
