The Academic development process

• The goal is the full realisation of the mergers in 2007 with a number of state research institutions (e.g. DIAS)

• High standard of excellence in traditional disciplines must be maintained and developed

• And at the same time we will seek out new possibilities and connections across disciplinary boarders and in close collaboration with the world around us

Jørgen B. Jespersen May2011

The changes• Academic organisation: One unified AU

• Reducing internal borders• From 9 to 4 faculties • From 55 to 26 departments• From many to fewer geographical locations

Management: One unified executive management • One unified senior management• Staff will have greater influence on the university’s strategic initiatives• Academic councils will be strengthened• Structure of the boards of studies and directorships of studies will be

reorganised in order to ensure student influence

Cross-cutting centres and forums: Collaboration across borders from day one

• New interdisciplinary centres and • Cross-cutting forums for researchers and management.

Finances and administration: more coherent processes• Focus on specialisation and service• New organisation of work flows and responsibilities

Making a strong AU even stronger

Research

Talent development

Knowledge exchange

Education• More flexible inner education market• Easier to exchange and develop degree programmes, courses and teaching resources across main academic areas, departments and centres

• Easier for students to combine their core subject with perspectives from other fields

• Ultimately the graduates will enter society with the ability to think and act across disciplines and boundaries

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)

in a Nordic Life Science Perspective• There is an international consensus on the necessity of ESD at all

educational levels and in NOVA’s strategy 2009-14 the visions are expressed.

• The semiar will focus on how we address the challenge of implementing ESD in our activities

• What does sustainability mean to the NOVA institutions, how do we deal with it, and how can education programmes within this subject contribute to development and perhaps increase recruitment of students in life sciences?

• The program will include speakers covering academic, industries’, and students’ views on ESD.
