SPRINGVILLE BOYS WIN CENTRAL CITY TOURNAMENT

The Oriole Little League team made up of 3rd and 4th grade boys dominated Central City last weekend. Taking the Wildcat tournament with a stellar record of 4-0, the boys swept the likes of Center Point, Olin, Central City and Mt. Vernon/Lisbon to win the event and the crown as tourney champs! SOFTBALL TEAM BATTLES TOP TEAMS IN ANAMOSA TOURNAMENT

The 5th and 6th grade Springville Softball team squared off against some pretty impressive programs last weekend in a Raider tournament held in Anamosa. The Lady O’s played Center Point first and dropped a 12-0 loss in game one. Then according to Coach Mike Swayze, “due to some good pitching by Kali Spicer and Mel Nulle the next two games were much better”. Game two was a 9-0 loss to Solon, but the girls played better defense and in game three, they played Davenport and fell 7-1. “They all kept their heads up and fought all the way and that's all you can ask from a young team. We will finish our season with a tournament in CC next week in hopes of bringing home some trophies”, said Swayze. Keep up the good work girls.

CRAZY MASCOT OF THE WEEK… There’s some pretty crazy mascot’s out there. This week we take a look at Aniak, Alaska. A small fishing village of 532 people, 317 miles west of Anchorage, only accessible by riverboat. Their high school teams compete under the nick name “Halfbreeds”. While the term is a slur in most places it is not considered one in Aniak. School leaders selected it in 1970 as a tribute to the community’s origin - when white fishermen married into the Yup’ik Eskimo families. Aniak competes in the traditional sports and wears the colors of black and gold. Pretty crazy, don’t you agree?

LADY O’S POUNCE ON NORTH LINN

After suffering a 10-0 loss at the hands of Creston by way of Cedar Rapids Jefferson on Saturday, the Springville softball team regrouped, reloaded and readjusted. The result? 18 runs, 2 wins and new life headed into the quickly approaching post season. Maddie Wittenburg got the win in game 1 and Chrissie Hoogland the win in game 2, and Kerrigan Riley earned the save in both. The girls will look to keep the “mojo” going when they travel to Maquoketa Valley on Wednesday for another conference match up. The Lady O’s, who are 9-19 will look to surpass last season’s win total when they take on the 17-19 Wildcats.

BASEBALL TEAM ON A ROLL

The word around town is that Kim Markley feeds the boys baseball team after they bring home a victory. She must be quite the chef, and one with a pretty stiff grocery bill, as the boys took 2 from Ed-Co last Thursday and another 2 from Central City on Monday. The wins earned them burgers, party potatoes and brownies on Circle Drive—but more

importantly, some well deserved respect in the Tri-River’s Conference. At 10-12, the O’s need to beat the Starmont Stars on Thursday in order to even up their record and strap on the bib for another meal at the Markley’s. Behind the pitching of Junior Kolton Markley (15 K’s in game 1 on Monday and 3 more to close game 2) and the offense of Senior Jake Hulett who was perfect at the plate against Ed-Co in both games, I’d say Kim better make sure she has plenty of propane for the grill. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 at Allison Field—Go get ’em guys.
